I really feel I have repaste this part of the wikipedia article, because this is what lead up to her 'whistle blowing':

Wikipedia posted:

Email to supervisor, recommended discharge

On April 24, 2010, Manning sent an email to her supervisor, Master Sergeant Paul Adkins—with the subject line "My Problem"—saying she was suffering from gender identity disorder. She attached a photograph of herself dressed as a woman and with the filename breanna.jpg.[122] She wrote:

This is my problem. I've had signs of it for a very long time. It's caused problems within my family. I thought a career in the military would get rid of it. It's not something I seek out for attention, and I've been trying very, very hard to get rid of it by placing myself in situations where it would be impossible. But, it's not going away; it's haunting me more and more as I get older. Now, the consequences of it are dire, at a time when it's causing me great pain in itself ...[66]

Adkins discussed the situation with Manning's therapists, but did not pass the email to anybody above him in his chain of command; he told Manning's court-martial that he was concerned the photograph would be disseminated among other staff.[123] Captain Steven Lim, Manning's company commander, said he first saw the email after Manning's arrest, when information about hormone replacement therapy was found in Manning's room on base; at that point Lim learned that Manning had been calling herself Breanna.[96]

Manning told former "grey hat" hacker Adrian Lamo that she had set up Twitter and YouTube accounts as Breanna to give her female identity a digital presence, writing to Lamo: "I wouldn't mind going to prison for the rest of my life [for leaking information], or being executed so much, if it wasn't for the possibility of having pictures of me ... plastered all over the world press ... as [a] boy ... the CPU is not made for this motherboard".[124] On April 30 she posted on Facebook that she was utterly lost, and over the next few days wrote that she was "not a piece of equipment", and was "beyond frustrated" and "livid" after being "lectured by ex-boyfriend despite months of relationship ambiguity".[125]

On May 7, according to Army witnesses, Manning was found curled in a fetal position in a storage cupboard; she had a knife at her feet and had cut the words "I want" into a vinyl chair. A few hours later she had an altercation with a female intelligence analyst, Specialist Jihrleah Showman, during which she punched Showman in the face. The brigade psychiatrist recommended a discharge, referring to an "occupational problem and adjustment disorder". Manning's supervisor removed the bolt from her weapon, making it unable to fire, and she was sent to work in the supply office, although at this point her security clearance remained in place. As punishment for the altercation with Showman, she was demoted from Specialist (E-4) to Private First Class (E-3) three days before her arrest on May 27.

Ellen Nakashima writes that, on May 9, Manning contacted Jonathan Odell, a gay American novelist in Minneapolis, via Facebook, leaving a message that she wanted to speak to him in confidence; she said she had been involved in some "very high-profile events, albeit as a nameless individual thus far".[61] On May 19, according to Army investigators, she emailed Eric Schmiedl, a mathematician she had met in Boston, and told him she had been the source of the Baghdad airstrike video. Two days later, she began the series of chats with Adrian Lamo that led to her arrest.[131]

Long story short she was going through some poo poo, went bum gently caress crazy, turned in a ton of classified documents somehow connected with this directly (and connected with her gender issues directly, again, making the whole loving community look bad) as a motive.

She's an unstable nutjob who literally kicked the hornet's nest with absolutely no care. Snowden spent tons of time censoring documents, omitting them, etc. Being careful with who he gave everything to, in waves. Trying not to get things like field agents killed. Manning just went "HEY WIKILEAKS MY BOSS SUCKS HERE'S ALL THIS DIRT" at it's core, whatever she says now.

I'm not some super pro-government person. I wholeheartedly agree that whistle blowers are important. She was a Goddamn dangerous wildcard that should never hold any political power over anything ever.

ED: Long story short supporting every Trans person because they're Trans is dumb as gently caress. Support people because they fit the post. I wouldn't trust Chelsea Manning with gossip, let alone state secrets.

The problem with "social justice warriors" is the same problem with the super conservative right in the 80s. It took me a long time to place the problem I had with both the right and left lately.

Lately I've come to realize i just hate authoritarian behavior full stop. Doesn't matter if it's heart is in the right place or not, it's all bad. The current climate is breeding bubble-living extreme view points on all sides of the political spectrum and everyone really wants to tell "the other" how to live, how to speak, what to do. There's leading by example, then there's trying to force people through bullying them to agree 100% with all things.

I don't think a lot of people really get this, I know even I didn't for a long time. It couldn't quite place why I disliked people trying to do good things so much, then I realized it's not always what you say or your message, it's how you go about saying it. Both the right and left want to point, scream and act like loving body snatchers to call for dog piling allies any idea at odds with them on even the smallest issue so there's no real debate or discussion. It's either "you agree entirely with me or I gently caress you up" and no attempts to change minds.

That kind of philosophy always gets a backlash and never works. I think there's something to be said for people with a good core message that gently caress it up by trying to make people do what they want at guntweet point.

ED: Not to mention I think a lot of things on the extreme left side (the extreme right just being pure assholes) are so worried about being fair the want to have like 500 special titles for everything which I have always thought is counterproductive. I've always tried to write with gender neutral language that is all-inclusive, which I felt was the way to really go but now apparently is insensitive or something.

The thing is she didn't just expose war crimes. That's why I'm saying what she did was shooting blind. She just took a whole shitload of data and dumped it to Wikileaks barely giving a gently caress what was in the rest of it.

Snowden again planned this poo poo for months and tried to, you know, exclude files that WEREN'T war crimes but had things like, I don't know, the specific names, positions and history of agents in the field and military strengths and poo poo?

There was no care. She jumped 0 to 100 in under a month while having a mental breakdown. There is nothing about this that's OK.

ED: The irony is the general public is just shrugging about Manning while still screaming how much of a traitor Snowden is, when Snowden tried way, way harder to not be a traitor and Manning kind of was exactly that. It's just a strange comparison case.

I'll save the celebration for the day social media realizes that.

I actually feel really bad for the trans community. Every single trans person that becomes a celebrity I can think of is a huge train wreck. I mean Caitlin Jenner is a generally terrible person (not that I felt any different about that when he was Bruce Jenner) for a while now, Chelsa Manning is both crazy and sort of a real traitor, etc.

I don't know if it's the media's love of screwed up people in general or if most people in that community aren't really wanting to make it part of the 24/7 news cycle or what. They really need like their Ellen equivalent of just some fairly charismatic talk show host or something that actually balances the scales. I can think of many reasons it might be the case but I'd not wager to guess.

the serious answer is that crazy people are more likely to act out. so the people the rise to the spot light are always more likely to have some sort of mental illness spurring them on than a normal person who's just gonna sit at home and watch netflix

Very likely the case. People who seek attention no matter their gender seem to be a little nuts.

If you look into it, the comparison is actually super apt.

Look at all the OTHER files she put up, NOT just the ones with the notably bad stuff.

A less dramatic example is more like saying you have a file folder full of bank accounts, and 3 of them in the files are run by the mob, so you publish the entire folder to expose those 3.

She in absolutely no way tried to filter the relevant data or was the least bit concerned about anything. She was also doing this around the same time she was carving poo poo into chairs and hiding in cabinets. Whistle blowing is good, but this was a horribly hosed up way to go about it with hosed up reasons to go about it.

Maybe you need to re-read the poo poo she released, Nefarious. They've gone back and forth if anyone died because of the information but people certainly could have (even if they didn't).

You can't go shooting up a department store with an uzi because they've got an illegal smuggling ring in the back. Even if nobody died, your lucky that's the case.

She was careless and the only reason I can get behind a release for her at all is the fact it's well recorded she was being bum-gently caress crazy that whole month and constantly fighting with people so frankly she should have been out on temporary insanity more than a commuted sentence.

I mean.. I hate to say it.. but the military does need to keep secrets.

Yes, they shouldn't be hiding war crimes and no, they sure as gently caress shouldn't be doing much of what they do. But they DO need to, you know, not announce everything they do to the public too. I mean I don't know what to say if you a so naive you think the military shouldn't have secrets of any kind.

I mean holy gently caress if we followed that policy we'd probably be seeing a major terrorist attack every day instead of like once a month

ED: Again whistle blow illegal poo poo. Mad props for ANYONE who's ever done that. I have nothing but respect for the helicopter crew that stood their ground on My Lai and saved a lot of lives and exposed what happened there. Anyone who exposes wrong doing is to be applauded. But not if they do it the cost of causing as much damage as they're fixing. If you're whistle blowing, you've got to be mindful of EVERYTHING you turn over.
