:toot:

One pilot in our squadron transfers out to a fighter unit.

From the War Diary of Boris Bolshevik - 62nd ShAP posted:

Another day, another meal I try to keep down as the squad learns that we must attack yet another airfield.

The flight to the objective was uneventful as always, save for our fighter cover informing us of their presence. It wasn't long after that we found ourselves nearing the objective, although flight lead A.

https://i.imgur.com/Z7Qfg5S.gifv

Radishevskiy called us down too early, and I spotted a large artillery concentration. Wouldn't be nice to barge into their airspace and leave without dropping a gift or two for the feisty fritz!

Holding on to a pair of rockets, I made my way to the airfield. (In my opinion, the whole squadron should have attacked this arty park!)

Lighter by a few hundred rounds and most of my rockets, I made a couple of passes against some parked planes and vehicles, and taking out at least one anti-aircraft gun, judging by the explosion. No one seems to have complained about my egress and methods of striking at airfields so far, so I continue with the trend and head straight for home.

Halfway back home, eyes ever vigilant for more enemy targets, a dark speck appears out of place from the surrounding clouds. I quickly pursue.

The ensuing move and counter-move sees me finally gaining the advantage on a careless Bf-109 pilot, and I make him pay dearly. His plane catches fire after a burst to the engine ruptures a fuel tank, and he has no choice but to bail out. Another tally, and another prisoner of war!

Nearer still to the airfield, I find what I believe to be the comrade of the last kraut I met in the skies above Moscow. Unfortunately, the multiple attacks I'd performed against ground targets, as well as the last "dogfight" I was in, meant I would soon run out of ammo, much to my dismay. I would spend the next 10 to 15 mins attempting to gain speed, cut into the enemy pilots turning circle, and cut his tail with my propeller.

I would be unsuccessful despite several close attempts. I ran the engine ragged, and eventually had to give up and fly back to base to land... only for the bastard to have followed me and promptly crash while my attention was elsewhere!

I was furious that it had ended that way, so much so that I hit the button to retract my landing gear instead of locking my tail wheel.

At debrief, my kill claim on the flaming 109 was dismissed. I do not know if a review board will confirm it later. What a day it has been.

Shameless bump, I was going to post a video tonight but the encoding is weird so I'm going to try and re-render it and see if I fixed it. If not, it'll go up as-is tomorrow with the mission update.

As always, my apologies for the delays to those of you paying attention to this LP, and by extension Boris Bolshevik's fight against the Nazis.

From the War Diary of Boris Bolshevik - 62nd ShAP posted:

The Germans are moving in armor towards the city, and a miserly sum of Il-2 Sturmoviks are tasked with stopping them.

It does not help that the clouds let out a torrent of rain as the sun rose, and a low approach will make attacking a convoy that much harder!

08:22
Take-off in rain, but thankfully the airfield had not yet turned into a quagmire of mud and filth. I do not look forward to the raputitsa...

08:33
While not exactly tree-top level, we're flying much lower than our usual assigned height. The rain hasn't let up, making navigation difficult. By the time I realised we were flying over enemy territory, I took note of the lack of escort. A bad omen?

08:38
It appeared that the flight was finally approaching its target, but a glance to my right in a poor attempt to locate the enemy simply resulted in my lack of awareness that the flight had disappeared! Curse this damned rain.

Angry with myself, I turn towards the area I believe the Germans to be moving through, just in time to spot my flight diving on something. Why had I not heard this on the radio? I'll have to talk to the mechanics about this!

Having located the enemy column, the attack was on. Fire from ground vehicles appeared to be quite accurate, as I took a number of hits while lining up a second pass.

https://i.imgur.com/VIL5R0G.gifv

After one run with my rockets, it became apparent that they were the High-Explosive type, and there was no way I could eliminate those tanks.

A third run proved just as fruitless as those before it.

Some hits on a tank only appear to have scratched the paint.

08:43
MESSERSCHMITTS, drat!

I knew there were at least two in the air, judging by the shots hitting my wings as I chased the leader. It was time to break and run.

https://i.imgur.com/f64XSpG.gifv

I take more hits but don't know from where exactly, so I pitch down and continue to run for my life. I could hear a faint explosion in the distance, but never did confirm what the source was.

08:52

As I run home, I pass above an airfield. It was not friendly!

Minutes felt like hours as I raced through the air. Checking my gauges, my fuel supply seemed to be diminishing at a rather rapid rate, forcing me to hunt for a suitable place to land. Fortunately, after finding my bearings, I got to a clear just south-west of home and landed there.

It didn't go quite according to plan, but I could at least claim I walked away from it!

She's seen better days.

All told, only Anton had anything to be cheerful about. As for me, well, I'm still scheduled for later.

When at an airfield, NPC characters spawn and move around along set paths. If you happen to have a plane (or just the propeller?) in the path they walk, they bump into it and die.

This gets counted against the player in a stat that, afaik, isn't visible to the player anywhere. Go over the threshold and congratulations youve been a German spy all along!

Thats what I get for hunkering down at an airfield while getting strafed and then spending 15 mins watching AI 109s try to down the other 2 in my flight... succesfully.

Honestly? If it were me, I'd roll with it and accept it as RP and create a new character and take the chance to play a new character or plane. There's something "right" about Boris being a successful pilot only to be executed by the Soviets.

This is seriously some of the funniest poo poo I've seen in a while. When the AI is *that* bad, why would you ever allow something like this to be coded into the career.

My guess is that the dude killing himself on your prop triggered the same mechanic as if you'd deliberately bombed your own airfield.

Well to comment on the previous mission it doesn't look like anyone had a good time on that one.

As for your wanton murder of a fellow comrade I'm assuming reloading a save is something this game doesn't do (on this mode?/because it's an option to choose?)

Once you "complete" a mission and have it go back to the roster or events of the day, it saves so whatever result sticks. There's legit no way to get around it other than backing up a file I didn't even know existed.

Basically, I saw "Friendly Fire" and thought "Boy howdy, that's weird, how will the game show I did that?"

Then I checked the events log and NOTHING shows up as "Killed by Boris Bolshevik" so I just stared at my screen :downs:

Okay then, hit the complete mission button and blammo! Murdered for thought crimes.

Looks like the majority for re-creating Boris Bolshevik is a go, but lots of people voted for other planes, so I think it makes perfect sense to shop Boris around to the various squads so he can show them how to fly escort and bag some huns in the process.

Boris gets relegated to an obsolete/more dangerous unit to see if they can bump him off that way?
