I can see what the AI is doing in these pictures with my dumb human brain when I have the prompt and I'm absolutely floored.

This has been absurdly interesting to me because I've always liked the idea of a "dream generator" that would let me see/watch the kind of weird poo poo that happens in dreams without being asleep.

It literally starts with a static noise image like this:

Then the A.I. goes "err, what am I looking at here?" and it gets fed the prompt, in this case "Jungle Valley Cave". And it says "ohhh, yeah, I kind of see a Jungle Valley Cave there. It looks kind of like this:"

And then it upscales that using some wizardry way beyond me and says "Okay here's that jungle valley cave:"

Then it says "Actually hold on, let me check again from another angle" and it looks at it a little rotated like this:

And it says (among other things) "Wait a minute I actually drew two huge dicks at the bottom. Jungle valley caves don't have dicks. Those must be boulders." and it tries again:

And then it looks again and realizes it did a bad job with the boulders, but now that it's looking again they look more like cave mouths, so it pushes it further that direction:

Anyway it's doing all of this because it sees nothing but random noise, and then it has a thought (the prompt). And that's probably remarkably similar to how the brain comes up with dreams. It sees nothing but random noise (b/c your eyes are closed) and then it has a thought and it tries to extrapolate that thought out of the random noise. And then your eyes move and dart around to view the random noise from a different angle to re-assess and draw the next frame, etc. (I'm no dreamologist I'm just imagining things). hell maybe even the shapes of your capillaries or whatever little bumps and things inside your eyelid shape your dreams in the same way that e.g. they're shaped by a dog in the free version of the generator

What I'd really like to see is one of these images taken and run through that AI that upscales old videogame sprites into the hand-painted style of famous artists but I'm not cool enough to have access to that

I was getting that issue last night. If you don't have the paid version ($9.99/mo?) there is a limitation on GPU slots available for processing this.
If you choose the CPU version YOU WILL REGRET THIS

How long does the newest one on patreon take? Did anyone pay the :10bux: to get on google colab pro? I've booted my gaming box into linux and have been running gpt-2 shitpost tweets all day with the slightly older notebooks, but my card can't handle the newer notebook. Anyway, these are from the "wake up" patreon book because that's what I could run locally.

I'm using Latent Visions (newest Patreon version) and have an upgraded Google Colab account

On the free version of Colab it was taking anywhere from 3-7 minutes to render each frame, I think it's faster or slower depending on what overall colab traffic/demand is like at the time.

On the paid version of Colab it's pretty consistently around or just under 1 minute per frame

I feel like I got a downgrade after moving to the paid Collab Pro version.

On the free version I got 1 minute / frame (100 iterations) type performance with Tesla T4 GPUs, subject to availability of course.

On the pro version things have slowed down to 6 minutes / frame and I'm getting older Tesla K80 GPUs assigned.

Scratching my head here.

I did not make those tweets, just fed them into the notebook here. Maybe there's a similar notebook for GPT-2 somewhere? I don't really know a whole lot about the deep learning space.

I guess it's pretty much a crap-shoot in terms of the GPU you get on colab, even with the pro version - I guess that's where the "Were you luck today" section comes in handy.

deep dish peat moss
Jul 27, 2006

Colab Pro bases your GPU on how many resources you've used recently (from their FAQ https://colab.research.google.com/signup#advantage ) but as far as I know on the free version it's purely based on availability.

And in a FAQ they have elsewhere:

"## Resource limits in Colab Pro

Your resources are not unlimited in Colab Pro. To make the most of Colab Pro, please avoid using resources when you don't need them. For example, only use a GPU or high-RAM runtime when required, and close Colab tabs when finished.
"

I haven't run into any limits yet and have had good speeds, and I spent about 2 days running this through most of the day but we'll see how it works going forward

"Steampunk dirigible plummeting out of the blue sky", iteration 600.

What fascinates me about this one is that it has an idea of what a steampunk dirigible might be. And whatever it came up with I guess reads. Sort of an oval shape, but with fanciful flapping fins on it. But also that since it is "plummeting out of the sky", it is rotated so it's at a dramatic vertical angle. The perspective is that of a would-be ground observer. The background has some buildings and trees. The buildings look plausible period for a fantasy Edwardian late 1800s coded by the "steampunk dirigible" subject prompt.

It's basically loving good for an AI painting.
