Definitely enjoying it so far though.

I think I started this one because, while I was waiting for you guys to reply, I googled "what is Chapo Trap House" and found some introduction for newbies that had it embedded.

The one from the day after the election, We Live in the Zone Now, the Reign over Me Grey Wolf episode, the two tabeltop grey wolf episodes

The tabletop episodes are a terrible introduction cause it mostly inside jokes. Just listening from the start is a good way to get all the jokes, and there's the stand alone episodes like Reign Over My Face, but if 50+ hours of year-old topical humor gets tiresome jumping ahead to We Live in the Zone Now is a solid plan.

There's one fantastic shot in Parallel Monsters, when the guy from the regular universe runs outside to see a giant neon Satan blimp in the sky, but otherwise it's profoundly lame

In general, I wouldn't say it's the top one in the film but that's only because the cult one is hard to top in terms of insanity. Like it's probably the least interesting segment thematically of the first two films but it's also the most balls to the walls crazy.

The cult one is just a cluttered remake of Rosemary's Baby, which isn't a bad thing but it doesn't have any bite at all.

There's something entertainingly brutal about their suffering - I think I remember a bit where he's trapped in a bag that's filling with water, which I dig. Parallel Monsters is almost really good but it doesn't stick the landing on the horrifying idea of being in a world that's utterly, unforgivably wrong but is also otherwise dully normal. It's the same sense I get when I have to work on Ash Wednesday and people keep walking through the lobby with crosses smudged on their foreheads.

Ok turns out I made a couple smaller posts rather than an effort post, but here they are, shoved awkwardly into one quote block

Jenny posted:

13 Hours gets pretty drat dope once the attack starts. My favorite characters are the two pretty boy 17 Feb fighters who follow Pornstache around and have no idea what the gently caress's going on but really want to help

---

To the extent that the movie lays political blame, it's primarily on slashed-as-gently caress diplomatic security budgets, which would be congressional Republicans' fault. Like, I totally get why right-wingers are gonna come out of it feeling vindicated, and it gives way more credence to "stand down" conspiracy theory poo poo than it ought to, but Clinton doesn't come into the picture and the overarching thrust is "nobody knew what the gently caress was going on that night"

---

One incredibly cheesy and kinda terrible but HONESTLY SORTA SWEET AND MOVING part of 13 Hours is how in the first act, there's a lot of elite gruff special forces guys introducing everyone to each other, right. So one guy will say "this is Mark Geist, we call him Oz, he's a former SEAL with three tours in Afghanistan and a silver star" or whatnot. And then Vilerat gets the non-combat equivalent of that: "this is Sean Smith, we brought him on to upgrade our cyber-security protocols and he ended up turbo-charging our wifi"

One of the recurring threads in that movie is an exploration of how combat personnel and non-combat personnel are often speaking two different languages in a dangerous environment like this, even if their goals are aligned, and it stood out as one of the few earnest efforts on the part of a character to bridge that divide

---

The thematic centerpiece of that movie is when they're in the armored truck trying to escape the compound and they're just slowly, awkwardly backing up and negotiating a lane change for a few minutes while everyone's screaming at everyone in languages the other parties don't understand

It's not that subversive because it still couches its anti-imperialism in that hoary "dickless bureaucrats holding OUR BRAVE TROOPS back" poo poo to an extent, but it's legitimately a rare and pleasant surprise for the moral conclusion of that logic to be "get our troops out of there" rather than "get the bureacrats out of there and let our troops fire rifles at as many brown men as it takes"

This is an extremely bizarre thing to get hung up on, especially given that hardly anybody was talking about Benghazi at all by November

Look the fundamentals of the Clinton campaign were solid, and for the Democrats to win in 2020 we just need to make sure that... [peers into crystal ball] Michael Bay doesn't release a commercial failure about a minor campaign issue that never mentions our candidate

I agree with just about all your points and really felt sorry for the PTSD'd driver even though he should have just turned left!

The zombie land shots are gorgeous too and how it turns out after they leave is heartbreaking.

Also I was reading some articles about it and people rented out the cowboys stadium to debut it and showed it at rallies to thousands of people. Could contribute to more people seeing it than the box office reflects.

But really they never show "evil" middle eastern people besides the one non speaking character who is the "leader". Most of them who are not combatants are just sitting around watching tv.
