Yes there are. There were in ME3 as well.

What instakilled you in ME3? I played it through twice, on Hard and then Harder, and nothing ever instakilled me when I had full health...but I also had quicksaving, so maybe it was less of a thing.

HOnestly, I think like, three Banshees in a group would come close to instakilling you, but nothing else.

Banshees, Brutes, Phantoms, Atlases, Scions, and Praetorians all had sync kills.

Wow. He tried to use the plasma bolts in a Hurricane and it somehow breaks the sound when he fires; as soon as the first shot goes off, the sounds changes to what sounds like a steel ball bearing shaking loose in a metal tube. It then doesn't stop. :psyduck:

A sync kill is when you get pulled into an animation ("synced") and then it kills you.

It's there is an attack animation that kills you regardless of health (and makes you unable to be revived) unless the enemy is staggered. Doesn't require multiple enemies.

It's less of a thing in singleplayer because there are fewer big enemies and because it doesn't matter how the player dies. It could happen though.

It's an instakill, and you can't be revived. They exist in singleplayer too, but you basically have to screw up in a big way for them to trigger. In MP it's more common because there's more enemies, and also lag.

You could be sync killed in single player too. It's when it plays a canned animation and you get wrecked, like a Banshee picking you up and stabbing her arm through your body. In multiplayer you're done for the rest of the wave if you get sync killed, and it's game over for Shepard.

Welp, used up my hours.

Trip report: Despite initial frustrations, I'm getting a much better feel for the Nomad after realizing that there are marked trails in the map and in the environment itself which has roads they suggest you drive on. So it's less of a dumb hassle than I'd thought, but I'm still not going, "Oh boy, I can't wait to get into my Nomad!!" or anything.

I hadn't paid much attention to this at first, but background music is really sparse in this game. I believe this was the case in ME3 and DA:I as well, and I don't really approve of this trend. It gives these locations less identity. Adventure games need adventure music! This is definitely something that JRPGs continue to do better at than western games.

Pro-tip: I don't think the ability descriptions mention this, but Overload can prime enemies for combos as well, just like in ME3. I think the prime duration is really short, so you have to use an ability right after using Overload...which shouldn't be difficult, with separate cooldowns now.

Multiplayer is really goddamn fun. As with ME3, it's acting as a pretty good training arena for SP for me.

Looking forward to continuing this game come Tuesday!

You become synced with an enemy animation which kills you with no recourse. Like, when a mimic eats you in Dark Souls and various grabs in Dark Souls (only you can survive that with enough health).

You need to be about to die though I think, or at least without a shield. It's very easy to dodge now compared to ME3 though, you can just roll around:

Welp, won my first Silver multiplayer match and MP is officially fun now. I guess it just 100% came down to the starter gear being utter poo poo, which... is an odd design choice, but whatever! It's pretty fun now!

To think, I finished all the SP content with 5 hours left and was pretty disappointed. Now I'm deeply regretful I only have like an hour left to last me until Monday-ish. :(

Quite a turnaround from having literally zero interest in MP before trying it to get SP item boxes (which seem to almost always be weapons, which make the other rewards look like poo poo!).

Played for about 4 hours tonight. Yes, there are occasional animation glitches, but overall, I'm having fun. I love the combat, and the sheer amount of stuff there is to do.

Yeah, it seems it got extended. Possibly in response to the trial only letting you get halfway through Eos so you don't get to see any of the stuff they're actually touting with the game as a whole.

Holy smokes this thread. Quit gettin' mad at video games, y'all.

It's an EA/Bioware product.
It has a hype train fit to colonise Mars (and probably funded well enough to do so as well).

It deserves the bulk of criticism it's getting.
You're telling me they spent over 4 years on this game but couldn't get human faces to be even in the ballpark of okay. I sort of understand why Ryder is bad because of the face morphs, I can sort of appreciate that Cora and Liam being okay but the rest? Even if they just ran them through a bulk generator, it doesn't take a staggering amount of effort to make them not look like garbage.
What's worse is how amazingly bad the character creator is, and how definitively the lighting set up was not made for the tattoos or makeup available therein (just like DAI and it's nightmare creations).

The characters themselves come across as bland as milk. The Ryder story isn't all that interesting, and it has to contend with gamey-as-gently caress mechanics that are just awful.
The story is a pretty beige canvas, and it'll be down to see if Bioware can still pull off generalised character-group development. Given how in DAI you went from being "The thing that killed the divine" to "our holy saviour" in like 15 seconds and don't lose it for the rest of the game (unless you play the DLC and get the endings from that) that quality is still very much in the air.

Is it going to be as bad as shitposters like Eonwe are making it out to be? No.
Is it going to be a bad game? Probably not, No.
Is it going to be a genre redefining moment of excellence? No.
Is it worth $80? No.

It'll be what it is. A game that's going to be at least somewhat fun, solid and disgustingly engaging for around 20-30 hours (and if you don't finish the main quest after that you probably never will, see Inquisition, Dragon Age), with a multiplayer that should be decent for at least 10 hours unless you find a tight group of game buddies (then that number skyrockets).
EDIT: It's also quite hilarious that EA thought it'd be a great idea to showcase the first 5 hours of a game from a developer who hasn't made a decent first 10 hours to a game in like a decade.
