Oh come on we all know they'd hate Somalia because of all the brown people. First thing they'd do once they get there would be setting up a strong government to push all the non-whites away. The only countries these people ever really loved was America before the civil rights movement and South Africa under apartheid. Hope you don't mind that I just used your comments on FB because an old high school acquaintance just posted that nonsense. We'll see how/if he responds. I grew up in a small metro area in Western New York (the Rochester area, for those who care). I'm starting to notice an interesting correlation among the people I went to high school with. The people who had any sort of liberal or progressive tendencies got the hell out of Dodge and are now spread all over the place, while the conservative people are still there, or at least are still within spitting distance of the town we grew up in.

This thread reminds me of why everything is terrible. Now I feel bad that December 21st wasn't the end. I had someone argue this in response to "Obama's family gets death threats daily, that's why they have a ton of armed guards. quote:Daily death threats or not--a hand gun would have been nice the day that crazy, drugged out homeless man attempted to get into my vehicle while stopped at a red light in DOWN TOWN BANGOR (pulling on my door handle which was thankfully locked, pounding on my window screaming at me to let him in). Either she wanted to kill the guy for intimidating her - she wasn't in any physical danger, certainly - or she wanted to use the gun to intimidate the guy, which is (as far as I know) irresponsible ownership. Either way, the fact that she may not be able to keep a pistol in her glove box isn't keeping me up at night. Also someone else referred to criminals who will get guns despite the law as "Obama's gangbangers in Chicago." But standard dog whistle racism doesn't get posted in this thread, its too common.

But I suspect there's already something to that effect that people really do believe. Boxman posted:I had someone argue this in response to "Obama's family gets death threats daily, that's why they have a ton of armed guards. Plus, there's nothing stopping her from owning a Handgun now, and Obama did not say anything about pushing to ban handguns nationwide (a ban that Heller already resolved as unconstitutional). So, basically, Obama thinks his family needs Secret Service agents AND thinks you should be able to have a handgun to protect your family.

Why do people think they look like a voice of reason when they're lamenting being unable to murder the mentally ill / homeless? That came up a week or so ago in this very thread, I think, where someone was using "those crazy people on street" as an example of someone you might have to summarily execute for bothering you in public. To me, that exposes someone as a very particular kind of rear end in a top hat, as people who literally don't understand anything but force.

I just love how the quote is all that matters to these people, there is never any desire to find consistency in character or belief. The Dalai Lama is also a capitalist-hating Marxist that is tolerant of homosexuality and ok with abortions for ethical or quality-of-life issues. His point has nothing to do with guns anyway, it's about the use of necessary violence in a dire situation (and as another poster pointed out, specifically non-lethal violence). I have a feeling that the Dalai Lama would frown upon a woman shooting a homeless guy banging on her car window.

All of my attempts at limited arguments about gun control end with "we need them to defend ourselves in case Ruby Ridge or Waco happens again" (and once with the lyrics to Dixie), which I honestly have nothing to respond because I have no idea what either of those are. Wikipedia's explanation of the incidents implicate federal organizations as poorly handling/instigating armed stand-offs, is that pretty much it?
