Going to a southern european (Portuguese in this case) wedding is a bit weird when my first two funerals were Swedish, since the dress is much more informal. Most wear everyday clothes, and basically only the very closest family members (offspring/parents etc) are seen wearing suits most of the time (even then, tie is optional). And then they do the opposite at work, wearing suits for average office jobs.

Woebin posted:Since we're on the topic, what would y'all recommend for a woman to wear to an interview in these parts? I'll typically go for a fairly nice dress and whatever shoes I can find that go well with it, but I think I've been overdressed at my interviews leading up to my current job and before that was pre-transition so I just dressed like a dude. I’d say business casual. I’ve been interviewing candidates for qualified government agency positions, and nice blouse and pants or a nice dress would be typical for women candidates. Business casual will do fine. For our interviews I think truly casual dress could raise an eyebrow. We don’t see many interviewees with jeans and t-shirts so to say, but we also mostly recruit boomers to older millenials. Wearing something obviously scrappy could be held against you, but more as a sign that you’re not good at reading a situation which is important for our specific job. But the only real faux pas was when a younger colleague went to a visit with the department of educatiom wearing flipflops and a wife beater. We still talk about that ten years later and cringe. lilljonas fucked around with this message at 03:25 on Jun 15, 2023 |

there are no more political movements which can meaningfully discipline their elites, and every senior politician is now keeping an eye on the well-renumerated sinecure where they get paid a lot to have people listen to them talk in a highly unrigorous environment as their likely retirement package. this is likely going to keep happening for the foreseeable future. e. there's a bunch of reasons why lobbying firms want to do this kind of thing. most obviously there's a ridiculous amount of money sloshing about and if one can increase revenue by even a little bit it's well worth keeping former politicians on the payroll - even if you're paying them ~5million a year they're likely to bring in several times that number in clout. this is the same kind of reasoning you see for why executives should be paid ridiculous salaries, or why we shouldn't scare off "our best" investors with a less-favourable tax environment: once the numbers get sufficiently big, marginal increases in efficiency can yield enormous dividends, the theory goes, and because everything's financialised to hell there's a lot of very big numbers sloshing about. From my personal experience, telling career politicians anything they don't want to hear is impossible. They remain convinced they are the smartest people in the room. "Oh, the law? Ahaha you jurists are so cute, with all your rules lawyering. Always talking about the law, aren't you". And then the record scratch comes 3-6 months later.

It’s been around for almost 40 years. Pretty much any grown up who’s done any rollercoaster at Grönan has gone on Jetline. As someone who’s worked at Jetline, I don’t even dare to think how the poor kids doing the operating of it today feels like. I am certain without a shadow of a doubt that human error didn’t cause this, but it must be traumatising to say the least. We who worked at the rides were constantly driven to work safely above all. To see this happen despite that is such a tragedy. Accidents on rollercoasters are thankfully pretty drat rare, but sadly not rare enough.

Horrible accident, like all amusement park accidents. I don't know how many times I've gone on Jetline. It's a good coaster, especially for its age. It's going to be interesting to read the report and find out the cause.

From what I've gathered the circumstances appear similar (wheelhouses cracking/falling off, safeties releasing) to other catastrophic stress failures of other coasters of the same manufacturer and design. Its a known design weakness in the cars or something? I guess thats why liseberg is more comfortable keeping theirs running as they updated theirs years ago.

Yeah, if human error is a relevant factor in your maintenance/inspection setup, your setup is not designed right. But also, I'm pretty sure rollercoasters are still safer than any other means of transportation, even by miles travelled.

Rollercoaster are very safe indeed. Even Jetline’s other safety measures worked properly: once the system noticed *something* was wrong, it ensured all the other trains stopped before they’d reach the same spot. You’ll often see Swedish newspapers make a “BREAKING: Guests stuck at rollercoaster on Gröna Lund” newsflash with the implication that it’s a huge deal when really it’s not: these things operate with a bunch of checks and balances to ensure, among other things, that there will be no collisions with other trains. Relatively minor things can set it off, such as a piece of clothing dropped on the tracks. While it can be scary for the people involved that don’t know what’s going on, such events are perfectly harmless. This was clearly something completely different. But, it bears repeating, it was also very unusual in Sweden. Last death I can recall from Gröna Lund was the result of some drunken rear end jumping from a balcony as a “shortcut”.
