I really don't know what the hell they were thinking with reducing the Rebels to a dozen refugees on the Falcon. Of course it would fit perfectly with the sequels trilogies lack of care for the setting or any kind of narrative progress to just give and take resources to the various factions so they never change. It's like how Cobra always has an army to fight G.I Joe every week despite having all their stuff exploded last week.

But this is pod racing!"

Hey, can we talk about the worst line in Star Wars history? The sand speech, “Now this is podracing,” “It’s a trap!”, “Only the Sith deal in absolutes,” are all silly, but at least they fit in a general milieu of silliness. But “We aren’t going to win by fighting who we hate, but saving who we love” stands out for being utter nonsense, just defying all sense and reason in the movie you just watched.

First reason is the obvious plot inconsistency. For all Finn and Rose know, if that laser goes off the First Order’s going to kill everyone in that cave. They don’t know Luke or Rey are around, so as far as they know they are the last line of defense. Finn’s not charging the laser because of some crazy vendetta, he’s doing it to save his friends, who he loves.

Second is a thematic reason. Taking a stand against heroic sacrifices is a little rich when there was a heroic sacrifice a few minutes beforehand, and the movie ends with a heroic sacrifice a few minutes later. I suppose the difference is that Luke doesn’t kill anyone or destroy anything, whereas blowing up the laser would have been too violent. Destroying a spaceship, on the other hand… Along with the earlier point, this highlights the meaningless of the statement. Was Holdo fighting who she hates or saving who she loves when she charged the destroyer? The answer, of course, is both, because it’s not a meaningful distinction.

Third and most importantly, the line relies on you not having understood anything that Finn or Rose have done in the entire movie. The first thing we see Finn do, as soon as he wakes up, is ask “Where’s Rey?” and do everything he can to get away from the fight so that Rey isn’t led into a deathtrap. Seems to me like he’s not “fighting who he hates”, but is instead trying to “save who he loves.” And who stops him from doing that, anyway? It’s Rose Tiko, who gets really upset that anyone would not want to fight the people she hates, attacks Finn with a taser because she hates traitors, and drags him across the galaxy to wreck a casino full of people that she hates. So, at the end of the movie, for her to go “Hey Finn, you’ve got it all wrong! We’re not going to win by fighting who we hate, but saving who we love!” is pretty loving rich.

It just seems like one of the screenwriters and Rian Johnson got really attached to the line early on in the process and couldn’t cut it, even when the script changed to the point where it was completely stupid to include. I guess that’s the lesson we should take away. Just like the past, we need to kill our darlings, if we have to.

Don't group "It's a trap" in there, that's a great line. I always thought the meme started because of how awesome it was. Not because of how lame people thought it was. It was punctuated by the scene directly after, showing the Imperial Fleet lead by the SSD directly behind the Rebellion Armada.

That poo poo WAS a trap. The growing realization building to that exclamation rules. gently caress the haters.

Even if it fit the themes of the movie, it'd still be a terrible line, because it's so god drat lazy to just have a character outright say the moral as if this is an old kid's cartoon. The fact that the film doesn't support that moral just makes it stand out more, but it'd be a painfully awkward line in any context.

It's like how in Rogue One, rather than actually show characters being inspired, they just had them say "Hope" a lot. The recent films have had a real problem communicating themes through anything other than awkward speeches.
