Windows 2000 was the most solid OS I've ever used. I was sad when it was replaced.

So I just signed up for Insider, and it's telling me that I'm "registered as an Insider, but to get the latest Windows features you need to install Technical Preview." Clicking the link (linked above) takes me to a 404. So I guess we know where it'll be when it's made available, which Reddit is suggesting will be at 9 a.m. PDT, in one hour.

Have you guys seen any wording to the effect that, if you elect to upgrade to the Windows 10 Technical Preview, you'll need to flatten and reinstall when the retail release debuts? I know with the Windows 8 Preview you had to, but for some reason the few blurbs regarding automatic updates that I've read are leading me to believe that that might not be the case with 10. It's probably just wishful thinking on my part.

I have a question for windows 10 tech preview users. If you have 2 monitors, 1 on the left and 1 on the right, are you able to snap to the right of the left monitor and to the left of the right monitor or are you still limited to snapping to the left side of the left monitor and the right side of the right monitor?

You've always* been able to snap between the monitors with Windows Key + Arrows, just not with the mouse. *Maybe not since 7, since I don't have a machine here to verify, but you certainly can on 8.1.

I just learned that you can 'snap' with the mouse (also the word snap). also, windows key+shift+left/right moves the window to the same place on the next monitor, and windows+shift+up stretches the window to fill the current monitor vertically.

Impressions so far: - Native old-school start menu is appreciated I guess. - Virtual desktops are a nice addition, it'll be nice if they ever give it more power though (labels, ability to assign backgrounds to specific desktops, keyboard shortcuts) - Quarter snapping is nice. I can't remember/find anything else that was suppose to be new in the preview. I know it's going to be evolving as time goes on, but as of right now its barely worthy of the title Windows 8.1 Update 2, let alone a whole new operating system. I've heard it works on VirtualBox pretty well if you set the OS Version to Win 8.1 when you create the VM. Won't get to try it for a couple hours, but I can post when I spin it up.

Also works fine in Hyper-V (which comes with Windows, if you don't want to install a hypervisor just for this preview). I didn't do anything special, just pointed the VM at the ISO and let it go. Native vhd boot presumably works as well, but I haven't tested.

I tried both, and when I try to power on the machine, I just get a message box saying "Internal error". On a different note, I'm trying to mess around with Prolog via XSB, and I'm having trouble getting Windows 8.1 to recognize XSB. I added ...\XSB\bin to the PATH variable, but I still have the command prompt telling me it can't find xsb. Any clues?

Trying out the preview with my apps right now: The item picker has some issues with Awful, but overall everything seems to work fine. You can now actually kinda use it on a desktop or laptop. The new VLC apps UI actually works really well with the design change. It's not a full featured as the desktop version, but it looks nicer and makes me actually want to use it on a desktop now.

Ironically, they've disabled the UI to disable Bing search results, and changed the default permissions of the appropriate registry key so you can't edit it easily. Literally baked in Bing results even on the Enterprise install by default.

The icons still don't look good. On some MSDN blog, they mention Secure Execution Environment, with Hyper-V in parentheses. Sounds like we'll finally be able to throw things into a VM sandbox without any explicit fiddling. It kind of implies that there's ways now to integrate app windows from a VM on your local desktop (I think RDP could do that anyway). At least I'd expect something like that for user friendlessness. There's a lot more text there, too. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/olivnie/archive/2014/10/01/who-really-knows-windows-10-technical-preview.aspx
