Dude I'm just going off recommendations. Not only that but the game could have done it in a way I like. I'm not dismissing anything based upon prejudice. You tend to try more things that way and tl;dr have more fun. Whatever, I should probably start a thread but I already created one horror...PantsBandit posted:

Game loving sucks. Not sure how it made it through any sort of playtesting for someone to sit through 500 lines of repeated dialogue in a stale torture sequence with no sense of control.

I just finished Resonance and it was pretty good, with some neat mechanics like being able to play as different characters and use that to solve puzzles in different ways, though (ending spoiler) the whole truther thing was kind of out there even if the plot tied to one of the prologue missions that you forgot about by that point. Also Rucks as a detective, especially with his opening monologue What else should I be looking at for interesting adventure games? Already done Primordia, I hear Gemini Rue is good?

Actually realtalk the Room was kinda cool and the last boss was really memorable but also the rest of the Hills have been a mess. The only point I thought was actually really neat in Downpour was how the main character appeared as a 'pyramid head' style monster to a side character and a lot of that was a side plot. That got glossed over but I thought it was a really cool detail. E The Room had a lot of nods to Japanese ghost movies that were cool. The ghost fights were genuinely creepy and the antagonist was unnerving.

The Room would have been amazing if the entire game was in first person and not just the apartment, and there wasn't a crappy escort mission for the second half of the game. It's got the must surreal, dreamlike atmosphere and I dug that. Way more than traditional blood and rust anyway.

Hat Thoughts posted:Shattered Memories is a really good and cool game Origins was also solid in spite of its troubled development. 4 has some really good atmosphere and potential plot but I thought it just dropped the ball on a lot of it and the second half almost completely ruined the game. First half is real good though. I really wish Konami would put 2 and 3 on Steam and GOG but that's probably never going to happen.

Trails in the sky question: I have just played through the tutorial dungeon and I am wondering if the constant belittling of the female protagonist for being stupid and absent-minded ends anytime soon? I don't particularly expect a JRPG to have a solid feminist analysis but the level of girl-bashing going on just in the introduction is excruciating for me. Wishing I could get my money back, or at least skip through the dialogue :-( Shadowstar fucked around with this message at 14:03 on Jul 31, 2014 |

I played the entire game on the PSP and don't remember that, so I don't think it happens throughout the entire game. Probably should quit though if it bothers you so much.

It goes away, don't worry. It's setting up jokes that Estelle is actually far more competent in things that don't involve fighting than people expect. She pretty much puts everyone who mocks her in their place. Joshua and Estelle will still tease each other a lot but they're siblings and it's meant to show how close they are rather than either being mean. The game isn't really making GBS threads on Estelle (or women. The other female party members are grear) but I can see how it looks that way early on. Estelle just concentrates so much on her athleticism that people think she's a dumb brute. She's just a little scatterbrained, not stupid. Shadowstar posted:Trails in the sky question: She's like given the same treatment as any male jrpg protagonist in the same situation, being kind of an oaf who'd rather get their hands dirty instead of pouring through books is pretty normal for the genre, and isn't the product of some sexist agenda by Falcom or anything.

Shadowstar posted:Trails in the sky question: It's friends teasing a friend a little, not some statement on how idiotic the inferior sex is. The game has a decent amount of female characters and all of them have pretty different personalities so I don't know how you can take it as 'girl bashing.' Personally I thought Trails in the Sky was actually pretty good about that sort of thing, since it has a legitimate female protagonist who's allowed to move the plot forward. The game isn't tearing her down.

The game isn't tearing her down. That's good to hear. I look forward to meeting some of the other characters. Girls = Dumb And Incapable of Doing Things Without Men Around is a pretty common trope and over half the dialogue so far has been her brother needling her. Her characterization has been about 10% "good-with-staff" and 90% "stupid." I infer from what you are saying that she has some other traits that contribute to the story at some point.

Dude, she's not really 'stupid,' she's just hyperactive and not good at pencil-and-paper type thinking. She's shown as pretty smart when it comes to things that let her get her hands dirty, or things that let her act more on instinct, and the game makes sure to emphasize her strengths. She's not a super complex character or anything but she's pretty fun and likable. And, well, he's her brother. Siblings give each other poo poo. There's plenty of points where Estelle teases Joshua, too, and neither of them are actually trying to seriously hurt each other, they're just teasing. Not to mention as the game goes on it becomes pretty clear that Estelle's the one leading and Joshua's the one following - there's a reason she's at the front of the party by default.

You should have seen hints of it with the recipe book if you've reached that point. Estelle is definitely not book smart but she's quite multitalented. As Endorph said a lot of male jrpg heroes are like her. Mokinokaro fucked around with this message at 15:13 on Jul 31, 2014 |
