Mr Teatime posted:I think that’s one bit of that lore people often get wrong, mainly because Cadians are sort of the template for ‘basic guardsman’ across the imperium (and more importantly, model range) and guardsman are generally depicted as mooks or fodder in 40k stories. But Cadians are supposed to be ridiculously hardcore, like just insanely good soldiers and the peak of what a baseline human soldier can be, they just live in the 40k universe so being the best human soldier only counts for so much. There’s a reason Cadian doctrine and gear is the template for a vast amount of the imperial army. cadians sucked so bad that they had necron help and still failed

What do you think the purpose of Lorgar was supposed to be "Hello I am the Emperor, if there's one thing I hate more than anything else in this entire galaxy it's women, but second place is religion. Welp anyway time to hand-craft my sons, I think I'll take one of them and make it so every fiber of his being is constantly crying out for something to worship"

Really more of a philosophy or ideology than a religion, but ultimately any means by which you explain the mystery of the cosmos (including why exactly your ships need certain pieces to not disappear into the Warp) requires someone who wholeheartedly believes in it and is both compelling and a skilled orator. I think in general the Emperor thought that people needed something to believe in even as he personally hated religion, in much the same way that he would tell you that he loathes the idea of tyranny even as he sets himself up as a dictator.

One of the 40k role playing games, Black Crusade I think, is about playing Chaos aligned characters, and from what I've heard the Always Sunny cast would make pretty fitting character templates for it.

My game of Only War years ago essentially devolved into an Always Sunny skit as the party of guardsmen became obsessed with the "Mr. Coffee 40,000" machine I put in an ork junk pile as a joke, commiting greater and greater acts of insubordination to lay claim to the piece of archeotech irrc when the npc commissar started to question the sanity of lugging an ancient kitchen appliance across an orbital bombardment zone the party deliberately ran him over with a chimera transport during the next ork engagement

CapnAndy posted:I mean on the one hand yeah, but on the other hand, Emperor-worship was what Lorgar was initially inclined towards and the Emp destroying Lorgar's favorite city and utterly humiliating him as punishment for said worship was a big factor in why the Heresy kicked off in the first place. Plucky Brit posted:…Except for the Mechanichum, who he is perfectly happy to leave worshiping him as a god. The Emperor is and always was a massive hypocrite. The Mechanicum venerate the Emperor as an aspect of the Omnissiah, and Emps didn't want to fight them over it. You'd also probably need the Emchanicum to know about Chaos at some point, they o have to build your ships. But debating them sounds like something you'd need a skilled orator who wholeheartedly believes in the school of philosophy you've used as the basis of your society. Believe me when I say that I agree with you about Emps being a giant hypocrite. The big thing is that Lorgar wanted something to believe in and Emps was the obvious choice, but Emps still had uses for Lorgar after the Great Crusade. Of course, blowing up his major city and denying your own divinity in front of him would have been a stepping block, but hey, he'll get over it once he sees the logic of my position. And he definitely won't hold a grudge against the brother who I told to do the razing. What I'm getting at here is that the Emperor is a reddit atheist.

The Emperor didn't actually have a problem with being worshipped by Lorgar. He had a problem when said worship started impacting Lorgar 's performance at Crusading. If he had been making comparable progress to his brothers his religiosity would have been treated much like Kurze's murderous butchery. Maybe not desirable but the Emperor doesn't actually care about anything except results. And much like a senior executive at Boeing, this was not a good long term attitude.
