I wonder if there's a mod to make the snakes and codexes not look like fetish porn.

So wait, do I have this right? If I start a new game with Alien Hunters ticked, but just don't do their mission (but grab the basic-tier weapons), they will never show up? It's only if you untick it that they show up randomly?

I just want my god damned exo suits go away resistance.

This is the third mission I've done in the entire campaign, to kill it I have to have the spark shoot as often as possible so that Shen can do damage (someone above posted that her skills ignore armor but they're not for me, they show a full damage number but only reduce the sectopod's HP by the full damage number minus his remaining armor). Best-case scenario is it's going to take me three turns to remove the armor and then another 3-4 assuming no misses and everything doing maximum damage to kill it, but Shen or SPARK dying are both fail conditions and he always kills one of the two in the first two turns. I'd just hide them and sacrifice my real soldiers instead but they're the only two who can do anything against the boss

You should be hacking the boss immediately

It's really really easy for Shen to stun the sectopod with hacking, and then you can have the SPARK wail on it with its armor-shredding cannon. Also remember that Shen is a max rank, offensive Specialist and all those fairly weak abilities are like triple damage against robots

Hello duders, I picked this up during the steam sale and after finishing up my other games I want to get stuck in. Would commander-ironman be equivalentish difficulty to classic ironman in xcom1? I tried the first mission last night, and after easily killing the first patrol the next immediately annihilated my four rookies. Just curious if I'm really setting myself up for unnecessary dick-punching or if commander is a reasonable challenge.

If you're familiar with the first xcom, then commander is a good start. It's tough, but also pretty exhilarating first time through.

I've just got the Avenger Defence mission, and I hadn't built a Defence Matrix. Is there any point in building one after this mission (assuming I survive it?) or is there only one Defence mission, ala Enemy Within?

Defence missions are random and theoretically infinite but you'd be extraordinarily unlucky to have more than one or two per campaign. Also Defence Matrices are basically useless. Even if you get the alien hunting event there's a chance you avoid the shootdown. I had Bradford show off his sick dodging skills 3 times one campaign before I finally got shot down.

You might build a defense matrix if you've upgraded everything to plasma tech and have nothing else to buy, but no they're basically useless. They're not even that great on the mission itself. If you don't have a Phantom Ranger to use as a scout, then the turrets can give you some peace of mind as you move your squad toward the spike. But that's about it.

if you have a defense matrix, upgraded, with an engineer on the job, the turrets are pretty ballin' actually however as you might expect from that explanation, the d-matrix is gold plating on the avenger, do not worry about it really

My first play through I built the Defence Matrix and had it staffed, and when I got the Defence mission I had four turrets that could fire twice a round at something like 75% a piece, for a ridiculous amount of damage. It definitely made the difference on that playthrough - I got lucky this time round and didn't face anything tougher than ADVENT troops and maybe one Muton, so I didn't need its ridiculous sentry farm.

You probably don't. It's theoretically possible to get another defense mission, but in practical terms you'll likely be clowning all over the xenos before they can launch another one. If you get to the end of the tech tree and you've got extra bitcoins, then sure, go ahead - if nothing else it looks awesome. But on your list of priorities, I'd file this one way toward the bottom.

On Vanilla defense missions are pretty rare enough that unless you expect to get super unlucky, you don't really need the matrix. If you're running something like Additional Dark Events that ups your chances of getting multiple missions, it may become a more worthwhile investment, though so far I've been getting lucky with that. Well I say lucky but it's more that the game tends to pull out more events that makes my life hell on the tacticalscape instead of events that makes my life hell on the geoscape since there's more of the former than the latter.
