Maybe it's the cut-away but it looks like the diff housing is almost as big as the transmission v0v

Did they have some kind of hybrid RWD transmission with a transaxle or did GM just decide that everything in that car had to be ludicrously over-engineered? I've replaced most of my memory from that bout of ownership with BMW knowledge but all I can tell you for sure is it had the aisin (sp?) 5sp from the h3/colorado which shifted like a box of gravel, but, once you got used to it, was real fun to absolutely punish gear to gear. Given that the kappa, iirc, was developed in conjunction with GM Europe, it might have some sort of crazy rear transaxle. The most I ever did to mine was a Dijon (body colored powder coated ) long tube intake and blow off spring. I was a stupid kid.

Amusingly the GM AR5 is exactly the same box as a Toyota R150 series (the one in the Supra, various Land Cruisers as Ferremit has said, all the Pickups that had more than 4 cylinders, etc...), the Jeep/Dodge AX15, and a handful of other vehicles. And it's fairly well respected in those. Certainly doesn't belong behind any respectable V8 or in a fullsize vehicle, but it's fine for mini trucks and small SUVs, 6 cylinders or less.

But that's still nothing compared to the Chevy 3.1L from the 90s, with it's "We know it's gonna spill ALL OVER the loving place, so we'll put this little catch-ramp just to the side of where the oil falls." Ford Ranger diff, leaked due to being rusted to gently caress. Garage welded a plate on for £90. Still leaked. Slathered on a whole packet of magic metal exoxy stuff for £5. Problem solved.

Hahahah, we did that to ACEofsnett's old 86? 87? 4cyl 4 speed RWD Toyota mini truck. Same situation, diff cover rotted through, didn't feel like replacing the entire banjo housing, brakleened the gently caress out of it then slathered jbweld over the pinholed area. Never leaked again, then he traded the truck to a guy with a 1995 Cherokee who, I poo poo you not, needed a truck because he played double upright bass and it wouldn't fit in the back of the Cherokee. I think Ace got the better side of that deal... guy loved the truck, though. e: wtf, Ford used 9" rears on Rangers in the UK? kastein fucked around with this message at 14:45 on Apr 3, 2015 |

Euro ford ranger of that era ('06) is based on the Mazda B-Series, it's a bit smaller than the US one. Came with a 2.5 turbo diesel and 5 speed manual. It's an alright truck, outclassed by the hilux but cheaper.

Amusingly the US market is the opposite of that, with the B-Series from 1994-2009 being just a slightly different body on a USDM Ranger. In the final few model years of the Ranger they actually used the B-Series beds on the Ranger "STX" model.

That's near Glenlivet (where the whisky comes from), and that's pretty common up there, although that isn't a public road. The only other vehicle that goes up that track that time of year is a lifted Landy 90 with fat tyres and snow chains. I had to stop 6 foot after that as the snow had drifted and was at headlight level. At the same time that photo was taken, my house, about 100 miles away only had an inch of snow.

Schools don't even close in MT after 18 inches of overnight snow. Done this before. Studded tyres are pretty much year-round for us - it started snowing in July once and the power cut for 3 hours because some fucker on vacation drove into a power pole. In the winter this is almost a weekly occurrence. Subarus are pretty much the only vehicles allowed on the roads. AWD isn't invincible though - our winch never seized from disuse. There was an old couple that somehow took their Prius out during the winter though, even on the hilly, slick dirt road to their house. 4runners, 4x4 Rangers, brand new Ford pickups, our driveway has put to shame dozens of capable trucks. Our Subaru and Isuzu Trooper are the only vehicles to make it up with finesse. I guess that could be considered a mechanical failure to keep it on topic.
