What part of god's hurricane messages did Galveston not understand?

Mistaken Frisbee
Jul 19, 2007

I didn't know about this event, or much about Galveston area, but I enjoyed how casually they brought up the 80 arrests from last year. So I looked up how it went this weekend:

There was a shooting where two people got shot, and...

Eighty-one people were arrested on Bolivar Peninsula on Saturday, and another 48 were arrested on Friday, Trochesset said. Most of the arrests were for misdemeanor crimes, including driving while intoxicated and minor in possession of alcohol, according to police records.

Why would this event be allowed to just keep happening?

We'll probably never get a smoking gun on this but it will forever be my firm belief that the state juiced the testing numbers for the last 3 days before the announcement in order to get the IR below 6%, which is the only phased re-opening benchmark the state met, and just barely.

Cheating at a raffle? I sentence you to 1 year in jail! No! Two years! Three! Four! Five years! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!
Somebody call for an ant?

But is it really necessary? Hes only pushing for the state to reopen with zero incentive for people to act safely and no way for local governments to force people to do so.

Especially since that last part is a direct result of him deliberately subverting local governments attempt to protect their citizens if he wouldn't. Surely he needs to eat some children before we burn his down?

The assistance was launched to help parents left without the means to afford child care as coronavirus devastated the economy and shuttered businesses across the state.

Now, essential workers, including grocery clerks and nurses, have just through Wednesday to apply for three months of subsidized child care, unless they qualify for other reasons. Those who are currently receiving subsidies can expect to finish out three months.

"Many essential workers who had kids in school hadn't planned or budgeted for child care for those months as those kids were already in school," said Reagan Miller, TWC's director of child care. "Child care was only authorized for each child for three months while they made arrangements for their longer term needs."

TWC had also decided in April to waive the required payment for low-income parents receiving state subsidies for child care, acknowledging that many were facing financial hardship. Those parents must now pay their share of child care costs, as of June 1.

The commission is also considering reinstating the work requirement for families receiving subsidized child care, depending on how unemployment changes as businesses reopen.

I'm going to buy into this belief, and add my belief that Abbott's not a true believer like Patrick or Paxton, his rush to reopen has little to do with Trumpian optics and everything to do with being able to pull back on state benefits as soon as possible

(because having a tree dropped onto you is the only valid reason for getting regular assistance payments, everyone else needs to stop whining about 'global pandemics' and start fumbling for those bootstraps)

No, you have it wrong. Having a tree dropped on him is the only valid reason for getting assistance payments. He pulled that ladder up behind him too.

Good lord look at the recommendations for child care centers

quote:

High-risk workers, including those 65 and older, should consider staying home.

Sick children and staff should be required to stay home.

If a child starts showing symptoms, centers should have a designated room to isolate the child.

Parents and guardians should limit their children's contact with people 65 and older.

Parents should only enter the facility when necessary.

For pickup and drop-off, centers should consider designating a parent to walk children to and from the classroom, wearing a face mask.

If centers rely on buses for transportation, riders should be spaced out and windows should be kept open.

Children should be separated in groups with the same caregiver. Those groups should stay the same and should avoid mixing with other groups.

For children ages 3 and older, there should only be 10 children for one caregiver; younger children should be in even smaller groups.

Playground time, art, music and other activities should happen at staggered times. Children should be outside regularly.

Playgrounds should be cleaned but not disinfected.

Nap time mats should be disinfected before and after use and should be situated as far apart as possible.

Toys should be sanitized and shouldn’t be shared between groups.

Staff working with infants and toddlers should wash hands before and after changing diapers, which should be done while wearing gloves.

Workers who regularly hold children should wear long-sleeved shirts and keep their hair up.

Infants, toddlers and workers should have multiple changes of clothes.

Children should be provided individual meals and snacks and shouldn’t share food with other children.

in a 5-4 decision john roberts says changing the rules of an election in the same year as the election risks confusing voters

Slow News Day
Jul 4, 2007

The ruling itself is a bit concerning because it contains language that can be limiting. Specifically, it says "“Any eligible Texas voter who seeks to vote by mail in order to avoid transmission of COVID-19 can apply for, receive, and cast an absentee ballot in upcoming elections during the pendency of pandemic circumstances.” Emphasis mine.

What this means is that Texas can institute a requirement whereby you need to prove that you want to vote by mail in order to avoid the virus. If you can't, or don't want to bother, you still need to show up in person.

Here's how the state appellate court ruled
https://twitter.com/alexazura/status/1261003213999931392

I dunno if one affects the other, but it doesn't seem like the state court feels like one needs to prove status, if that's even possible. In fact, under this ruling and given the lack of herd immunity or a vaccine, it seems anyone who hasn't had covid would automatically be eligible to vote by mail. I mean SCOTUS will do as it will of course.

Hasn't the supreme court constantly backed down on states determining their own electoral procedure when they were letting them do voter ID and purge voter registration and gerrymander to their hearts' content? What would be the legal basis for them all of a sudden flipping around to outlaw a measure that would enable more people to vote and protect them? Like I know why Republicans want to prevent people voting, but what's the fig leaf on their disgusting gangrenous dong of autocracy?

Not that I don't doubt that they'll try and find a basis, I just want to know how stupid it'll be.

I want to apply for vote by mail because I'm in a high risk group for COVID complications.

On the form the closest checkbox is "I am disabled"

That's technically a lie. Should I submit the form as is with "disabled" checked, per this Judge's ruling, or am I commiting a crime?

that ruling is legitimate (for now!). if you don't have covid antibodies, you're technically disabled in this instance

For the Wisconsin thing last month they said "changing the rules of the election" (making it so everyone could vote by mail) so close to the election would confuse voters and therefore not allowed.
