I wonder if that's the 2GB m1050 or the 4GB one that'll be in the XPS 15 (or if there would be any difference in these benchmarks regardless).

I'd be very interested to see a comparison between the mobile and desktop 1050s. Given that this is an apple to apple comparison, itd be neat to see if there is an appreciable difference, especially since I have a pet theory that the giheung fab (the main one) makes the 'desktop' 1050s while the austin one (constantly playing catchup and follow the leader) is producing the 'mobile' ones. I'd love to be able to directly compare the two fabs given that austin would be well described as that sad child who is constantly looking up to their cold, distant parent who doesnt spend much time with them and is constantly striving for attention and approval from them.

Ciaphas posted:I'm gonna pick up either the Acer 14" chromebook or the Acer R11 chromebook from best buy tonight. $20 difference in it, so I'm not fussed there. Couple questions about the R11 before I decide- Sorry I wasn't able to see this a few days ago so I'm not sure if you've already made the purchase, but: - The R11 hinge is solid; it's perfectly fine for a <$300 laptop. - ChromeOS functions the same way, touch or not; it doesn't enlarge the interface or anything like that in touch mode (partially because the touch devices always have that functionality available) but there is an on-screen keyboard available. Touch in ChromeOS doesn't really add any functionality, but it works, and is nice to have because you can sit back and scroll, navigate, whatever, just like you would on your Android device. It's one of those things that you don't need, but once you've used it you miss it when you go to a non-touch device. Between those two devices I'd steer you towards the R11 just for the extra functionality and portability, since the Acer isn't that much faster and while it's physically nicer it's also quite a bit larger. The Acer has the better display though, however the Acer 14 also comes in a base 720p version which you should avoid. fishing with the fam posted:I would like to expand on this a bit. If I did care about gaming through a docking station, would a thunderbolt based docking allow for use of the laptops GPU? If your laptop has a Thunderbolt interface, you could use it in two ways: - Perform the video processing on your laptop and send the output to a TB display. - Use an external GPU like with the Razer Core or similar. You want to do neither, though. The docking station you got is clearly using the DisplayLink technology to get video over USB, that's the problem you're running into. Your solution is pretty straightforward: you can keep the dock and use it to simplify the connection of your peripherals, but you plug the monitor directly into the laptop via HDMI or DP. Simple! You have only one extra connection to make when docking (power, 1xUSB, 1xVideo) and it will work exactly how you expect it to.

The lenovo outlet store is kind if hilarious. I've been trying to pick up a T or X series laptop. I added a system to my cart twice and by the time i got to submitting my order it was no longer available. I had to speed buy an x250 that popped up this morning. Its either really lovely inventory management, or really clever marketing. I landed a 12.5" laptop with an IPS screen for about $650. I'm looking forward to trying it out when it arrives. Special shout out to Hadlock for keeping the op up to date for like... 3 years.

Does anybody have an opinion on the 14" Lenovo Yoga 710 as a basic photo editing laptop? I'm looking for a decent screen in a reasonably built laptop for some basic photo editing and it seems to fit the bill quite well. For reference I have a budget of ~£800 (~$1000). I'm completely unbothered about audio quality and I'm usually at a desk so battery life and weight aren't too much of an issue either. I know the answer for "good screen" is an XPS 13, but they cost a little more than I want to spend, so I'm open to any other suggestions. *E* For reference, the Lenovo UK store currently has the Yoga 710 for £700. The XPS 13 starts at ~£900 here and jumps to £1,000 for the first model with 8GB of RAM. jammyozzy fucked around with this message at 22:04 on Jan 1, 2017 |

If you want I can give a shout how it feels like when it arrives this week. canis minor fucked around with this message at 23:54 on Jan 1, 2017 |

I didn't see the HP envy series in the OP, is it crap? How does the screen compare to the XPS screens in terms of color reproducibility for photo editing? I found a sale for the HP ENVY 15-as131ng model with QHD, i7-7500U, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD for 1K euros. Spec wise that matches a 2K euro XPS 15, except for the missing touch screen. If the display colors are just as good I'd go for it. I can't find reviews, as I'm guessing it is just now being launched. However there has got to be a downside somewhere. Mostly I am getting frustrating waiting on a XPS sale, since so far the prices have only been going up. Ika fucked around with this message at 18:00 on Jan 2, 2017 |

Let's say that I'm trying to have my $800 Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (GTX 960M) from 2015 repaired by my Asurion 3-year warranty, which states that if they cannot repair my laptop per cost, that they will give me an amazon giftcard equal to my laptop's cost. What would be a better laptop for gaming/GPU purposes that could replace the former laptop around the $800 price range?

Grouchio posted:What's the best laptop to get for around $800 that has the best graphics/GPU stats/cooling system? You may want to wait for at least CES (in a few days) because of GTX 1050/1050ti mobile GPUs in laptops and their possible announcements. At the 800 dollar range you aren't getting a 1060 unless you score an amazing deal which will definitely be short-lived, which means you're settling for the 960m which is just world's worse, and even a 1050 standard (which is looking like a lower-end 960m replacement) would net you about 35% extra performance. With that said, if you need it in a hurry, I'm not sure how quickly any laptops announced at CES will come to market, but there are already screenshots floating around of MSI laptops with the 1050 currently available in some stores.

Grouchio posted:So what would you recommend I should replace my GTX 960M with in case I need to? Are there sturdier gaming laptops out there? Or ones with much larger hard drives than just 256GB? If you already have a 960m laptop (I'm a bit confused by your post) then buying another 960m laptop to replace it is absolutely not a good value proposition. If you want to replace it at 800 dollars with an upgrade, then you'll have to wait and see what 1050/1050ti laptops are priced as (and we'll probably learn some of that at CES). I presume they'll occupy the same price points of the outgoing 960m models they replace. Otherwise your next step up is the GTX1060 which you can nab at 1200 USD if you snag a deal, but if you don't then you're looking at more 1500~2000 range, the pricier you get, the better build quality and "prestige" the notebook. If you're asking if you can replace the 960m GPU in the laptop itself, the answer is a flat no.

http://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-13-g1-14-qhd-aluminum-chromebook?ref=cp_cnt_wp_3_2 Hey, so, if anybody's interested in the very nice HP Chromebook 13, there are some refurbs on Woot at that link above. The base model for $410, the m3 for $460, and the m5 (with 8 GB RAM) for $560. Not bad considering the base model retailed for $500 new! They all appear to have the 3200 x 1800 display, are fanless, with backlit keyboards, 2x USB-C, and very nice speakers. Highly recommended if you're into Chromebooks and want a nice one but don't want to splurge on the Pixel.

If you're looking at buying a laptop, you should absolutely wait until the end of the week, at a minimum. CES is in full swing and will be announcing/releasing a ton of new devices over the next couple of days If you're buying a laptop with anything less than a 1050, especially if you use it unplugged, you're completely bonkers With the MacBook pro and 10 series GPUs out and CES Wrapping up this weekend, it's probably time for a fresh OP
