I was waiting for those two beef HP CRTs to destroy that table but it managed to stay up.

It was kinda noisy in there, just mainly due to the place hosting it, being an indoor sports centre

I bought that exact same HP on the very right back in 2000 with one of my first paychecks from delivering for Pizza Hut. 533mhz with 256mb of ram. I basically daily drove it for the next 3ish years. It came with one of those CRT's that had the speakers that could be notched into the sides, and the first keyboard I ever saw with media keys.

I had a similar HP Pavilion from a couple years before that with a PII at like 250mhz. That was the machine that started my descent into nerddom, as I started tinkering with it to get better gaming performance. Added RAM, changed the GPU, might have added an optical drive of some kind. Was a pain in the rear end to work in that case, but it was the first computer where I messed with the hardware.

I'd have considered dual CRT monitors myself, but at the time I had a DEC 21 inch CRT I'd found at an electronic junk shop for ten bucks. I don't think my desk could have taken the weight of a second one.

I had some spare money I didn't actually earn back in 2001 and I was dumb enough to drop it on a gaming PC including a 21" Samsung Syncmaster monster of a monitor, the one with the blue-colored arc on the top of the monitor. Thing would heat my room pretty decently by itself. Kept it until 2007 or so.

I'm sure it's the camera, but that absolutely looks like it's sagging under the weight of the CRTs.

I stuck with my CRT monitor until well into the 2010s and only upgraded because by then, the 4:3 aspect ratio was well and truly on the way out.

I used a Sony GDM-FW900 CRT up until 2010 when it sadly died. That thing was an outstanding monitor - 24" flat screen, 16:9ish and able to do basically 1440p resolution, built-in USB hub.

It also weighed 98 pounds.

iirc it was 16:10, i.e. 1920x1200. in the garage i have three of the sun equivalent which were not flat but otherwise the same, but they haven't been fired up in like a decade. i wonder if they still work. all three probably pull down as much power as the whole rest of my setup, lol

e: i just looked it up and they do indeed do 2304x1440, but only at 75Hz. if you want 85Hz, and surely you do, 2048x1280 is the best it can do. 1920x1200 was a bit more popular of a resolution though

I think I might have ran mine at 85hz, but it might have been at 75hz - I considered 75hz minimum on my CRTs. I had more than enough headaches having to use 60hz monitors under fluorescent lights to be averse to it.

yeah 60Hz is intolerable, 75Hz is tolerable, and 85Hz is pleasant. i dont think i could tell the difference between 85Hz and up, at least not at the time. for any prolonged use i would insist on 85

the monitors i wish i could have back were the sony CPD-G400 i had in high school and shortly thereafter. only 19", and did 1600x1200@85Hz and were incredibly sharp with great colors. rip those things

I often keep my Amiga or C64 on the end of my normal work desk with the 1084 CRT monitor that runs at 50Hz. It's fine when you look at it straight on, but when the monitor is in my peripheral vision I see really bad flickering. I think human vision has higher refresh rate in the peripheral vision.

When I took mushrooms I could see the flicker in fluorescent lights. I can't remember if it commonly happened when I took acid, but it might have. I think there is some individual variation, but it wouldn't surprise me if some people can see the flicker even without :catdrugs:.

I don't know about refresh rate, because that's not really a thing for eyes, but I'm pretty sure peripheral vision is much more adept at noticing motion.

My parents had a Motorola carphone at one stage. It was in stepdads work ute with a big loudspeaker on the ringer so he could hear it when elsewhere on a construction site. It was always fun to see him jump/fall scramble and gently caress himself up to get to that phonecall that could be a new contract, only for it to be mum wondering when he was bringing me home.

Here's my latest tech relic, it appears to be a 286 motherboard installed in a generic XT clone case with a CGA monitor. It seems to start up just fine but I haven't really had much of a chance to tinker with it just yet

Aside from the yellowing on the front panel it's in overall clean condition.
