The biggest obstacle is probably that only something like 40-60% of the population votes in any given election. When half the country is just refusing to get up and vote, you're not gonna have much luck finding more than a handful of supporters.

Why don't we have mandatory voting?
That doesn't really make a lot of sense. You only need a majority of actual voters in order to win, not a majority of the total population. (Or technically it's the per-state electoral college thing, but you know what I mean.) A third party only needs to gather supporters in proportion to the actual voting population, so reducing the size of that population hardly hurts them.

The biggest issues I've seen with Jill Stein's supporters is that they're just throwing a hissy fit that bernie didn't get the nomnation, more than they care about ending the two party system or actually supporting the green party. The real way to try and "bring a revolution" is to just campaign for the next 4 years for the green party, put as much passion into it as they did with bernie and they might actually see some change.

Imagine ancient Greece and other civilized regions of the old world at that time. Every city had its share of lunatics that stood on street corners and yelled nonsense from sunrise to sunset and any passers by with half a brain recognized it as nonsensical gibberish so they just wandered on past without making eye contact.

Facebook groups are the modern-day equivalent of that, except now the lunatics come from all over the world to the one street corner so they can scream this poo poo at each other instead of into crowds full of sane people.

Bernie himself is an excellent example of how change has actually gone on over time: instead of running as an independent with little to no chance of success, he ran in the established party and came incredibly close to scoring the nomination over Hillary. Had he run as an independent, he would have turned out to be another Ron Paul. And now that he's out of the race, he's trying to get people to at least vote Hillary to keep Trump out.

I wonder how many people are voting Trump purely out of spite now, hoping to see America burn to the ground around them if they can't instantly turn it into a socialist paradise.

We've spent over 150 years trying to keep a good chunk of the population from voting, even into today with this "voter fraud" junk. What makes you think we want mandatory voting for the entire population of the US?

So, I really hope this is an exaggeration. If you don't want to click the link, it's a huffpo article detailing how a website posted theoretical maps showing how this election would turn out if only one gender could vote. Women vote for Clinton, men vote for Trump, not surprising. What is surprising is the new twitter trend #repeal the19th. Jesus Christ.

There's a fun game I like to play on Facebook. The rules are simple.

1. Choose a trending news story.
2. Click on the most insane public post about it.
3. scroll through their profile, find the worst thing they've shared, and go to the source.
4. Find the most insane comment on an image.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you lose faith in humanity.

tl;dr She makes a post saying, basically "don't denounce Trump as a misogynist when you say misogynistic poo poo all the time too." He likes the post, she calls him out, and he proceeds to flip out. He says her being fat is just as "sinful" as him womanizing (he is fat too), says everyone is bullying him, threatens suicide, and posts the personal info of his family members, ex-girlfriends, psychologist, and priest to get them to vouch for him. He also accuses OP of saying straight people should be murdered and then says his mother is dying. He has apparently been exiled to Russia because so many people in the US have restraining orders against him.
