I kind of appreciate how DOTA is at its core a better game than HOTS, really, but the deeper gameplay comes at a price of clunkiness that i'm not willing to deal with. I'm too old for last hitting every minion and just want to have a good time.

Just got the golden space lord leoric skin in a box, now just need a golden mount to go with it, or maybe i'll just put him on a pig like 90% of my other characters.

Because it was, for the longest time, a one-to-one port of Dota? :v:

I've gotten 8 heroes from boxes in the last few weeks. 5 have been duplicates. I don't own THAT many heroes.

I wish there was a mid-ground between the two - I love the depth and counterplay of DOTA, but there's mechanical things about HOTS (Team level, Talents over Items, some of the mapping, game length) that I really enjoy.

So I redownloaded this as something to do until BfA comes out - are queues normally 5-6 minutes? I'm level 14 and I am see level 100+ in my games so is there just a shortage of people? Last time I played was probably 2 years ago but I dont remember the queues being this long, I've played 7 games and theyve all had 300+ second queues.

I'm lvl 285 and in quick match I've seen everything from lvl 1 to over 1,000. There is some MMR matching in play, but at this point I think their priority is getting roughly equal comps more than skill. And there are plenty of really, really bad people out there that have been playing since release - don't take a high level to mean anything more than 'plays a lot'

The matchmaker will never put together out-right mismatched teams in terms of comp (except when it's bugged). It tries to put together teams of similar MMR but as your queue time goes on it gets increasingly YOLO and might just toss a bronze 5 on your team and balance it out with a bronze 2 on the other team (or the QM equivalent).

No. If I queue up for QM right now on NA I'm confident I'll have a game in less than two minutes and possibly less than 30 seconds. Queue times are pretty bad if you're trying to play the weekly free heroes at low levels because everyone at your rank is queueing up with the same 10 or so heroes. It's also worse if you're playing a warrior or support because you will only be matched against a team with the same thing.

Ah it's probably a little bit of all the above then. I'm normally playing around 11pm-2am EST and all of my games were Tassadar since he's free this week and I don't have many heroes.

Meh! Even if the queue times stay bad it's better than suffering through another game of League. I'm trapped in some kind of toxic hellzone MMR there. So far there's been far less raging in quick play HotS.

That it doesn't happen every game makes it all the more special when it does :3: Some dude was tilting in Kala's Discord this morning because a rando took offense to being told what to do in a ranked game, and then got angry at him when he followed up after the inevitable death. He was not able to understand why the other person got upset with him.

Tassadar during free week is the worst case scenario. He can only be matched against a team with another pseudo support (medivh, zarya, abathur, or tyrande) or with a full support on both sides. The matchmaker really doesn't like mirrors, so it's also making you wait for another pseudo-support to hopefully queue up before saying gently caress it and doing another tassadar mirror.

Man I hate all of the solo laners now. Sonya's just not working out for me now that she's balanced, Yrel is not for me, I'm a terrible Dehaka, Thrall's always felt bad, Leo and Rag feels weird, Malth is blah, Chen is Chen, Blaze nobody will use bunker... I spammed Muradin and now I'm spoiled by how absurdly strong he is in a team fight, every non-assassin feels weak now (muradin obviously gives up his ability to ever push a lane for his power)

I guess Dehaka and Thrall are probably my least bad options. I'd really like to just side lane ETC tbh.

Ok reality is that I should just pick Zagara, but it makes games feel too easy.

A little confused about how the new placement rules work.

It says this:

"Players who enter ranked play for the first time can no longer be seeded into placement matches higher than Gold 5.

Players who return to Hero League after an extended break will no longer be re-seeded into placement matches based on their performance in other modes."

So if I skipped last season HL entirely, but placed I think lowish Silver the season before that, does that mean the highest I can place is Gold 5? I'm halfway through placements now and am against high Gold folks so it'd suck if it's like "lol sorry Gold 5 demotion match".

You shouldn't be limited. For players who took a break, the game no longer cares about your MMR in other game modes though. Before it would kind of use QM and other modes to figure out where you should be if there wasn't enough data from HL. That is my understanding.

it means that gold 5 is the highest you can be put at the start of your placements, but not the end of them (so by the end of placements you can go as high as plat 5 having started game 1 at gold 5).

I had a game on BoE where I was solo laning a lot of the time but it was clear deckard was carrying (the lunara and the jaina were obvious morons who died to chromie repeatedly - the jaina was last pick INTO Chromie and Nova). I dropped the usual "deckard god" at the end and he mentioned he had been in master and was climbing up, I looked at his match history and he had a 90 percent win rate or so and had been master like two years ago skipping HL ever since. That's a lot of games he basically ruined by being better than everyone (not his fault) which is the downside of this system.

There's a third rule that matters in this case. I can't find it all official-like, but I'm 90% sure you can't jump more than one division during placements, meaning if your old rank is Silver 3 the highest you could get is gold 3 and the lowest is bronze 3.

How they implemented these rules in relation to each other is a mystery, since lol complex systems

Yeah I remember reading that 1 tier up or down thing somewhere. Well we shall see.

So far I'm just maining Johanna in HL, she's not as play-makey or damagey as Garrosh/Diablo but I feel like I can protect all the blundering overextending dps'ers pretty well. And just be real annoying. Also can double soak when the "4 man" rotation is just me.

Maybe I just suck at getting value from that shield. It seems like a pretty pitiful stun duration for an ultimate - do you use it for peel, or what?

bamhand
Apr 15, 2010
You can peel you can initiate you can counter-initiate. It does everything. Even nails that guy running away so you can kill them! Think about it this way, your job as a tank is to be in the fight locking people down. The first thing leap does is take you out of the fight for several seconds leaving your team helpless. And if you use it to start a fight, it's highly telegraphed and again takes several seconds while shield is instant initiation.

Shield is real dope. You can mini-stun with your E, slow them all with Q, blind with all with E, then when they think they're getting away pow all stunned again.

Works good for setting up Jaina's ring (or I guess any of the wombo mages) if you make sure to tell your Jaina to not just randomly mash R.

Leap, I dunno, I think if you want a gap closer taking the little speed boost on your E works just as well.

edit: lol, got flamed real bad for playing Yrel in UD. People think she's a main tank for some reason?? I was solo laning against thrall, then got the ol "gg where was yrel". Then team keeps randomly wandering the map looking for fights while we're 3 levels down, a talent tier down, and with 1 dead; again "gg poo poo Yrel". I first picked Yrel and our Varian then went smash...

She's more suited for solo-lane, she doesn't have the peel or CC that a main tank needs to lock down the enemy team. Same with Blaze. You could probably win with her on main tank but a traditional comp would have a solo laner (like Yrel), main tank, two assassins and a healer.

There's a weird obsession at lower levels with just looking for fights, even if you are down levels and outnumbered. Last night, during his Community Coaching stream, Kala explained, with a spreadsheet that takedowns especially prior to level 5, give poo poo XP compared to minion waves. Laning is ridiculously important but people get furious if you do it. I once got pinged for laning as Raynor, so I relented and headed down to my team from top lane but they decided to engage 4v5 and we all died. Great.

"once", you mean every game? I'll get asked to soak bottom and then the team ints 4v5 invading a merc camp immediately afterwards. it is absurd, it is constant, and it is responsible for 60% of my losses.

Players have 0 ability to not engage or stop engaging. It is the most stressful and irritating part of HL, no question, just having no idea how to walk away from a fight... you are stuck choosing between being even in xp and the risk of your team invading and wiping because they're bored, even if they seem totally ok with you soaking at the current moment.

I don't even know if soaking post-10 is worth it any more for any reason unless the enemy team is showing given how eager blue team is to throw at every opportunity.

Yeah holy poo poo, people having giant extended fights for no reason is the ban of lower leagues. Don't loving fight unless there is both something to gain by winning and you're reasonably sure you can win.
