I just finished up Nobunaga the Fool. It wound up being pretty mediocre, but I can't really hate on the show. It went in a really bold direction in the end and while it was messy as gently caress, I'll take that over farting out a generic way to end your show's conflict especially considering how the genre has been over the last few years (looking at you, Valvrave). I guess I could say more about how Kawamori gets crazier as his settings get less grounded, or how a lot of the historical figures were really poorly used, but instead of that, I'm just gonna drop this excellent reinterpretation of The Last Supper, devoid of any context because everyone needs to see it: I had to pause while watching because I was laughing so hard.

Huh, that was a mecha show, wasn't it? I still need to watch the last episode but I kept forgetting all about the war armor and the regelia. It was pretty good though, if weird to me how Ceaser became a good guy so easily after causing so much carnage. WickedHate fucked around with this message at 02:03 on Jun 29, 2014 |

No, the dub only did the first half and it's really not a show you should watch dubbed. The writing and voice direction are both awkward as gently caress and the original voice track is some of the best work of some very good actors.

Yeah, GaoGaiGar is definitely one of the best super robot shows ever made and I'd say a major inspiration for stuff like Gurren Lagann(especially the fourth quarter of GL) with the caveat that the initial setup episodes are very formulaic as they introduce various characters. Once the major storylines start up it never really stops though, and then you hit FINAL and your brain explodes with hype.

ugh... I'm all for cutting crazy people some slack since they literally can't help it but that guy can die in a fire. Yes gaogaigar is good, its not the only good thing ever made and him projecting his awful awful life onto literally everything else is intensely tiresome. GoaGaiGar is a good show but I think it gets hugely overhyped. The first arc in particular is extremely weak aside from a few standout moments and a lot of what it does has been done in previous Yuusha shows. Not to devalue all the things it does right but it is a pretty big victim of overhype at times.

Instead of doing that he dedicates his sad life to being wrong about things on the internet. Actually things is too broad, its just mecha anime, that is apparently the only thing in his life. Still best get back on topic before zorak starts busting heads. Relating to GunXSword talk, I also watched star driver and SRW: the inspectors; loved Star Driver to death liked SRW but couldnt recommend it on account of the fanservice stuff. Dudes with swords shout "CHESTO!" in all three shows typically when jump slashing a guy, I'm assuming its a kendo thing but can someone explain it? I... don't understand. I wouldn't say it's too tryhard, because a lot of the cool stuff in GGG is the earnest, straight-faced way it uses ridiculous superhero stuff like ChouRyujin's "death" and return. That said, hoo boy did they make it obvious they were changing their target audience in a really weird way.

Seriously, in a show with full CG robots you can't manage to actually show them fighting? The Takeda/Nobunaga fight was a loving joke. They sprung for an insert song for a fight that consisted of shaky portraits of the two pilots and the two mechs running next to each other. It was pretty awesome when the crazy backstabbing murderer became a good guy in approximately 30 seconds, though. They sprung for an insert song for a fight that consisted of shaky portraits of the two pilots and the two mechs running next to each other. You might have some fun if you just skip to the final episode. It probably won't make sense but it might entertain you! But yeah, they definitely had budget issues. Plus Satelight is a studio that used to be really good with CG mecha stuff back in the Macross Frontier days, but it feels like they haven't improved at all. You could show this to me back when Frontier was airing and I would never guess that it's from 2014 because goddamn, Frontier was so much better with its visuals. Meanwhile other studios have been putting out stuff with slick action. For all the dire problems in the scripts of stuff like Valvrave or Buddy Complex, the action was a consistent high point most of the time. I could forgive the shoddy CG if the choreography was decent but it's not. And as for the writing, it really falls off the rails in the second half. When Kawamori gets into supernatural stuff in his shows it's so obtuse about it that I'm not even sure if he understands what he's writing. Plus it really feels like they went through some rewrites at the midway point because the show really changes and they completely forget about stuff like how the beginning of the show hinted that this was some sort of afterlife for all the historical figures. Oh well, at least Macross is returning in the future. As long as Kawamori doesn't pull another Macross Zero I feel safe in saying his next stuff won't be mediocre, at least e: I guess the kindest thing I can say about Nobunaga the Fool is that it doesn't have the typical writing problems I have with a lot of recent (read: past 4 or 5 years) mecha shows. It has its own set of writing problems for sure, definitely no looking past that. But I think I made it to the end because its problems were such that I was curious to see how it'd end (and heck, I'd even call that ending better than what the show deserved, even though it was messy as all hell). I'd settle for any super robot shows being made at all. Seriously wheres the genre gone? The closest thing in a while has been Captain Earth but that skews more to the real/hybrid robots side of things 90% of the time. Everything else is going for the exaggerated seed style real robots lately; Valrave, majestic prince, gargantia, lagrange, etc.

By extension, that state of affairs is related to the point Taniguchi was probably making, as someone who had regularly worked on Sunrise's long gone Super Robot shows. He was an episode director and storyboader for GaoGaiGar, the Eldoran trilogy and the PV for its never animated fourth entry. The market might well have moved on after the "golden age" for those series ended, sadly, but the Eldora Five showed there's still value to them. wielder fucked around with this message at 01:45 on Jun 30, 2014 |
