Wamdoodle posted:When factoring in cost, you also have to factor in the fact that the various Windows Surfaces run a full build of Windows 10. It's basically a laptop in a smaller form factor with all the caveats that come with that. Those caveats are a real trip up. My Surface Pro story has an unfortunate ending. I ended up returning it this weekend to microsoft. I just couldn't help shake how less touch friendly Windows 10 is than an Android/iOS touch UI. And it's not like it isn't touch friendly in tablet mode. It felt like it required a greater degree of precision than I expected it to have. I'm not sure if that's due to a higher focus on Pen usage or that Windows just doesn't prioritize touch input as well. I just couldn't help feeling like i was using a laptop that also could use touch input rather than a tablet that I could also use as a laptop, if that makes sense. Which is a real shame because there was a lot I liked in the Surface Pro. It just landed in an uncanny valley type situation.

I want to replace paper and pen as the main way of taking notes in meetings for myself and my company. We use Google apps and ms office so either of those can work for us (evernote looks cool too). We need notes that are digital and sharable to prevent us constantly typing things up. We have tried using laptops in client meetings which is OK - would getting some kind of tablet / stylus combo be better? Does anyone have a good experience of totally replacing paper in this way?

If you're looking to include drawings and stuff in your notes, OneNote is free and has sharing/collaborative use features. No idea how good it is at that job though. Typing vs. handwriting notes comes down to use cases and personal preference, I feel.

Surface Pro 4 is probably the way forward here, simply so that different people can approach in the way that they're comfortable with: they can use the stylus if they prefer to jot, or type on it as a laptop with the keyboard cover. OneNote's amazing on a personal level for that, but I've heard that large enterprise-scale notebooks have some syncing and speed issues still; just anecdotal, though. It's probably the most developed for being deployed across a full company, though. I don't think Google has anything remotely comparable in place for notetaking. ehhh... i find myself watching a bunch of youtube, netflix and amazon prime in bed. On my nexus 6 phone that is several years old and kinda small for this sort of thing. My Nexus 7 is so old it can barely even run after updating the OS, so I don't bother booting it. (anyone want it? i'd wipe it and ship it to you for cost plus 10 dollars for gas and lunch and your advice on what tablet to buy if you have some weird need for an original) I'm I didn't read the last 56 pages, but, for a media device, just to stream youtube, amazon prime and netflix is the Fire HD8 the way to go? I've read that maybe the 10 isn't worth the extra price? Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times. Would love some input though. I don't need any google apps on this. As long as it does netflix and youtube i'm good as I know it does prime well. [edit] some twitch.tv as well... i assume fire os supports that or does it? [double edit] i just read back like 3 pages and it seems like this is exactly what I want. 10 kinda poo poo, 8 HD is nice for streaming. Twitch I saw was available, as I think netflix and definitely prime are on the amazon store.

You can't get the Youtube app (without faffing around) on a fire, but the standard Silk browser shows youtube content just fine. At least that's the way it works on my Fire HDX.

I need two tablets for work but have very little idea what I need to look for. I'm going paperless for my piercing portfolio and release form, I'm looking for two tablets to help accomplish this! I am ok with them being a generation behind, I'm hoping to stick to around $200-$250 budgeted all together (likely buying used) Both will be connected to wifi and used exclusively at the shop, so no need for any sort of 3g or 4g connectivity. Portfolio- This will be set up on a stand that is anchored to a table. Set to display a slideshow of past work, it will be on and running 7-8 hours a day connected to a charger the entire time. So battery life is a non issue, but I'm looking for something that has a fairly large and sharp display so that photo quality doesn't become awful. Release Form- All I need this to do is take photos for ID's and run a basic application that I have my paperwork setup on.

Even buying used you'll have trouble finding anything you can get two of for $250 total that won't be janky Chinese garbage. Looks like used Nexus 10s are around the price. They're not very good, but I guess the screen is supposed to be nice, though I'd hesitate to use an OLED screen with anything that will be on constantly. https://swappa.com/buy/nexus-10-wifi

What if I went for $200-250 on just the portfolio tablet? I can work on getting the other one once my wallet has had a little bit of time to recover. I prefer Android because I am more familiar with its OS

Getting a cheap android tablet with a decent 10" screen is near impossible. Everything on the budget end sticks to 8 or 7. Is there a reason you don't just want to buy a monitor and a cheap compute stick for the portfolio?

There are probably even cheaper solutions than a regular compute stick. Depending on how you've got the stuff you want displayed, a chromebit or fire stick might even do you. (If you were tech savvy enough you could even Pi Zero it and get the compute half done for $10, but that's another level)

It's faster, has a better screen (including anti-glare coating), is thinner, and has Pencil support. If none of those matter, then no, not really.

I want to get my parents a new 10" ipad with cellular capability in the next few months. Do those models ever go on significant sales? It's not like the money is a big deal, but I'll still be annoyed with myself for spending an extra 30 bucks. Edit: By new I mean not used, an Air 2 is fine.

If it's Verizon, Verizon will offer a $100 trade in on an old iPad 1, 2 or 3 if they have an old one. Another $100 off with two year contract. All carriers off and on will offer "deals" on iPads with service, almost always $100 off, and sometimes $200-300 off.

Finally getting around to get the kids tablets for a flight to keep me sane(-ish). Only really need something I can store videos on they can watch along with fairly simple applications (colouring, whatever). Is the Fire still the best option for me? I'm in Canada so their warranty unfortunately isn't likely to be much use. But aside from that are there any other reasonably priced options? I mean, I'm happy to pay more but given the relatively undemanding use these are likely to have for the next year or two I don't see a reason to spend too much. ETA: After checking quickly at a US Best Buy it looks like it'd be about 75 $ for the Fire 16 GB with a folio case. Or I can get a Fire 16 GB with their kids case for 80 $ and warranty. Seems like I should just go with the kids case and maybe they'll play nice about the warranty? Still though, any other recommendations would be appreciated. Fire tablets are fine, just be sure you get the ones that don't have "special offers" which is a relatively innocuous way for them to shovel ads onto your device. As far as the warranty, Best Buy tries to sell you on protection plans, etc., so be sure you're not paying extra for it.

Someone suggest me an android tablet that is cheap and will mainly be used for web browsing. I'm coming from an Ipad Air 2 which is going to be a severe downgrade but I haven't had any real use for it outside browsing sites ever since I bought it at launch. I'm thinking of getting a new tablet because the battery life on my surface pro gen 1 is complete garbage by this point, also it's got a decent amount of kinks that I'm a little tired of dealing with. I think I want to get a samsung tab A 10.1 (the model with the s pen, both because I want the s pen and also it has 3gb ram instead of the 2gb in the model without the pen) because I want android or windows, 10" or bigger, decent resolution, the wacom digitizers, and as cheap as I can possibly go with all those criteria. Is there any glaring flaw to that plan that I can't see? I know the Tab s2/s3 would be better but they're too expensive.
