I remember downloading a .mov or some poo poo of The Spirit of Christmas then getting excited when like a year or so later I read they were making a show based on it. Forum olds unite.

I remember when South Park came out, I was a freshmen in high school. I watched the first airing of the first episode and loved it. Went to school on Thursday and started talking it up, but everyone was quick to write it off as "too stupid." Then by the same point a year later, most of them were yelling "BEEFCAAAKE!" down the halls. Still love the show, probably more so, now, than I did back then. Then I remember that the Spirit of Christmas was a really hard to find Easter egg on EA Sports Tiger Woods 1999. That was the first time I actually saw that short.

But I had to suffer through ~10MB RM and ASF copies of the first season which still took hours to download. Some of my friends in the US had told me about these insane new show and it seemed to be cult enough from the get go to be publicly put up online even back then, unlike most shows. YES, realplayer was such a poo poo format

But I knew a few people who were very pissed off. I don't know, though, if people would react the same way today, now that the show is well-established and the fans are much more used to the style of humor that permeates everything about South Park. Hell, back then, we were still getting used to having a show around that killed off the same main character in every single episode.

It's pretty universal that some kind of "adult" thing attracts kids. I was 12 when I started playing DOOM, way back in 1995. There's a term out there called "periphery demographic" for this kind of thing. Hearing about all the children who watched South Park reminds me of all the men who watch Friendship is Magic. EDIT: First EP was "Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000" IIRC. Reminds me of the days when "2000" was a thing. Young adults and younger girls are both groups that SP and FiM were targeting respectively. Just because something is a cartoon doesn't mean it was made with children in mind. It's possible that the creators did also want to target little kids and just got stuck with the rating, but I'd need more evidence to be convinced. EDIT: Just to clarify, I would never compare SP fans to bronies as people themselves. Not even the kids, despite the irrefutable fact that kids are dumb. Yep, that's my story, too. Was in my 20s. For my Grandpa moment, I'll admit that of all those musical acts that appeared in the second to last episode, the only one I had ever heard of before this season of South Park began was Miley Cirus. I thought for sure that "Iggy Azalea" was some made-up character, I mean, that's got to be the worst name ever. And the only reason I had heard of PDP before South Park was because I play SMITE, and recently HiRez (the publisher) ran a promotion to "play along with PewDiePie". When I saw the text promoting that, I assumed that PDP was female! Partly because I figured out that his name was meant to be said like "CutiePie", but also because HiRez has a bunch of new generation cam-whores that promote the game over Twitch. Seriously, one of them goes by "Chixy".

I'm watching Happy Holograms again and I'd forgotten/missed that there were bits and pieces of an extended version of Bill & Taylor's Baby It's Cold Outside dubbed over by loving PewDiePie vs. CartmAAAAAAAAAn Brah. God damnit. It was fun, but it's disappointing because it feels like they had a chance to hit a home run but had to shoehorn all this other crap into the episode. Does it feel like there's always at least one diabolical scheme per season of South Park these days, with mixed results as to how funny it is? Somebody's in a close-up shot, talking quietly about their evil plan to do something which ties into whatever pop culture topic the show is trying to have fun with, whether it's Cartman trying to get Family Guy cancelled, Randy "BZZ BZZ" to skip Black Friday lines (which was hilarious), or the producer's holiday special. Talking old South Park episodes, the first one I remember seeing was the pilot when a friend brought a VHS over which had 2-3 episodes on it in 1999. My town went from 37 to 63 channels on basic cable in July 2000, with CC among the additions. The first episode I watched in my own house was Do The Handicapped Go To Hell?. It and Probably are still two of my favorites, because then and now there's something hilarious about a gay love triangle between Satan, Saddam Hussein, and a somewhat wimpy man who died falling down an escalator WHILE Cartman discovers religion in an attempt to make $10M. I think back to those episodes and it felt like they were doing well without having to be too preachy or try too hard. CBJSprague24 fucked around with this message at 01:50 on Dec 29, 2014 |
