Does anyone know the statistics on what number of people heavily involved in young Labor/Liberals end up becoming candidates for the parties?

Until I have actual friends in the Queensland Greens, which I don't. Friends made me sign up, maybe friends will make me quit.

I originally joined the Greens just to hand out HTV cards at election day. Now I'm branch secretary, state council delegate, and a member of the constitutional working group. Like Nuclear Spy says, you really sort of have to throw yourself into it because things don't just happen on their own and The Greens are in need of every member/volunteer they can get. Also that .gif needs to be in every OP.

QUT banned Greens groups from being formed. There's a ALP club with only 8 members and the YLNP club has over 400. We have to team up with the exiled socialists in order to get 30% of the vote Anidav fucked around with this message at 14:17 on Nov 23, 2014 |

In my experience Griffith is full of awful Young Labor shills and UQ is the one full of filthy socialists but thats just from the perspective of spending a lot of time in uni bars, not actually engaging with student politics in any meaningful way

I am speaking from personal experience and encounters, so this may differ largely from what the norm is.

Anidav posted:Until I have actual friends in the Queensland Greens, which I don't. Friends made me sign up, maybe friends will make me quit. This is bullshit. All through university the majority of my friends were in Young Labor and constantly harassed me to join and I didn't do it because there are lines one does not cross and I still managed to have friends while campaigning against them politically and critiquing their politics. If they're going to wig out at you not fitting in with their bullshit orthodoxy then why bother being friends with them, they're clearly usurious fuckwits. Grow a spine dude.

Joining groups and what not in university is a key way in which one makes friends. And hey, these friends won't be Young Labor hacks so it's win/win. I'm surprised to hear that UQ is more left leaning than Griffith and QUT. You would think that all the people who are likely to be Liberal voters (i.e higher SEC people) would gravitate to the sandstones. I guess higher entry requirements could be a barrier...

Shakugan posted:Joining groups and what not in university is a key way in which one makes friends. And hey, these friends won't be Young Labor hacks so it's win/win. UQ was essentially taken over by the Young Liberals as I graduated and after VSU gutted everything. I'm pretty sure the elections had something like a 10% participation rate though, which is including the dupe votes and fraud you might expect. UQ has/had a much larger focus on the humanities and the Arts than QUT which is essentially an oversized business school, and if there is one way to describe a young liberal its an inner city white 18 year old private schooled business student who now knows everything after 6 months of tertiary economics. Student politics seemed a lot more visible at QUT though and when the elections were on there you couldn't move for all the fuckwits

Did QUT actually ban the formation of Greens groups?
|
# ? Nov 23, 2014 23:18 |

Yes, you cannot form a group affiliated with the Greens. The YLNP guild will basically ban you from making events or meetings on campus grounds. Killing any plausible momentum.

Is there any kind of documentation?

Basically your club has to be approved by the Guild in order to be official. Labor slipped through but only has 8 members. However the various proposals for green groups have all been rejected. The reason is most likely political. So the body that approves clubs isn't separate from the student political LNP wing therefore the only clubs that hold events are the YLNP, QUT Sports, Economics and Law. A crazy stranglehold on campus culture. Anidav fucked around with this message at 23:35 on Nov 23, 2014 |
