Sports Illustrated was busted publishing articles attributed to fake authors with AI-generated bio photos: https://futurism.com/sports-illustrated-ai-generated-writers Apparently they bought the 'content' from a third party which didn't even bother to cover their tracks at all, the site where they got the fake bio photos still had them featured: For a while there every time someone found a fake author and called them out the magazine would just delete their name from the article and sub in a replacement fake person, lol

Sorry I don’t keep up with this thread much, but I wonder if there’s been discussion about the potential use of AI generated models in advertising, media, and social media? I’m imagining a world where instead of women being traumatized by their inability to meet impossible beauty standards set by the most attractive people on earth, enhanced by image editing, standard is raised even higher by flooding media with people who don’t even exist? I feel pretty confident that this is where we are headed and I just feel bad for young people

Pretty sure we're already well past explicitly fake instagram models, much less the ones that hide it.

I feel pretty confident that this is where we are headed and I just feel bad for young people There was a case here in Australia during the Indigenous Voice To Parliament referendum where some random guy on Facebook created "Vote No" ads which featured AI-generated models which had indigenous features: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/aug/07/indigenous-voice-to-parliament-no-campaign-ai-facebook-ads He got called out on it pretty hard but tried to claim he didn't realise people might interpret it that way. Sure, buddy. Online porn is already flooded with AI generated images and high school kids are spreading deepfake porn of their classmates and not only traumatising their victims but getting also arrested on some pretty serious charges: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/deepfake-nude-images-teen-girls-action-parents-lawmakers-ai-pandemic/ It's a problem here in Australia as well, to the extent that the government has introduced new guidelines specifically to tackle malicious deepfake porn: https://www.smh.com.au/technology/australia-launches-world-first-crackdown-on-deepfake-porn-20231119-p5el1v.html A guy just got charged in Australia for creating deepfake porn of several teachers and female students from a local school and posting them on his website: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-12-06/qld-deepfake-images-court-charge-antonio-rotondo-school-students/103195578 Surprise twist: he was already in jail for creating malicious deepfake porn of female celebrities Also a dude in Japan got arrested a couple years ago for using AI technology to unpixelate the genitals in porn and then sell it, which not only broke their obscenity laws but also copyright laws: https://gizmodo.com.au/2021/10/deepfaking-genitalia-into-blurred-porn-leads-to-mans-arrest-in-japan/ It's real hosed up! I assume it's all AI generated content now.

I do that in photoshop all the time to sharpen up a picture. They probably should have made sure it was on actual film before applying that as a blanket approach though

webcams for christ posted:no the noise is from the film scans themselves. the 4k in this instance is higher fidelity to the original medium Right, I think we're talking the same thing. Let me explain what I mean though with an example. (And by no means am I saying this is the technique they used, but it seems like it could be likely because my results end up similar) So super tiny Citizen Kane picture. Purposely small for the sake of example, there's barely any detail. upscaled 4x we end up with weird distortions and it's very evidently not a natural image of a person so you take that upscaled image, overlay over the original image just with a normal algorithmic enlargement, sharpen some poo poo and add some noise It's by no means perfect (especially since this example is intentionally exaggerated to show the algorithmic effects) but you're closer to an approximation of something the human eye will accept as a picture of a human being. The problem is, upscaling works super well just by itself on line art. But you're on a deadline, you've got a batch process running through all the old cartoons and it worked on the movies so just slap that same grain overlay and oops

I'm under the impression that the Charlie Brown stuff is a new scan of the 35mm film, not an upscale:quote:Again approaching the Holiday Season, Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has released the TV classics: "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (1965), "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (1966), and "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" (1973), all remastered in 4K, scanned from the 35mm camera negative, or a second generation print when needed, and released for the first time on 4K Ultra HD. and it's funny and sad the redditor I posted above is lamenting that it doesn't look like fake-smooth upscaled 4k animation

# ? Dec 15, 2023 15:10 |
Ah well that's definitely digital noise in the 4k shot so I suppose it could also possibly be a compression and decompression algorithm trying to pull off the same trick in the other direction (shrinking the 4K master a bit and then stretching it back out app side to save a bit of data) Which is a damned shame

WrasslorMonkey posted:Wait why is it definitely digital noise and not just film grain from scanning old 35mm film? if you blow it up you can see the chunking If it was just a raw image quality issue you'd expect a uniform distribution for the noise but you can definitely tell this is a byproduct of compression or upscaling or some poo poo they didn't take into account.

I meant you'd expect it to be... dispersed uniformly, not in those blocks. That's indicative of compression. And that's what I'm seeing on the 4k version from apple tv as well, though it's not quite as pronounced. And now I'm downloading a blu ray rip just to see where this went wrong in remastering because it does really look a lot worse than it ought to.
