Any word on who green-lit Oscar Isaac, then? He's Guatemalan-American

Oscar has been on an endless upswing in terms of stardom and women find him goddamn irresistible, so it wasn't exactly a hard sell. Also if you showed the average person a picture of Oscar Isaac in his normal clothes, just walking around, a chunk would probably assume he's part, if not all, white (at least if his hair is cropped short - when he lets it grow out, you go "yeah this guy is Latino as gently caress". Or if he has a mustache. Seriously.) And on top of that, Central Americans in general are relatively "safe" to Hollywood for whatever reason. Probably because they've been around the business forever given LA's location and the migrant patterns of the area.

Boyega is a dude that hadn't really done much since Attack The Block (literally three movies, one a British crime drama, one a small part in a Nigerian historical drama, and an American indie the year before TFA). He, in this case, is more of a risk than if Abrams had pitched the studio on, say, Michael B. Jordan in the role.

As long as they took some other shots out, otherwise they'd be six hours long.

We've already moved back from that compared with a decade ago. Quantum of Solace is edited that way because of poor decision making, but it also legitimately feels like other films of the era.

Camera movement is dope. I especially love the really slow dolly shots. Like the one during the opening of The Neon Demon.

It's interesting to hear from Cameron about the pacing. I really agree with him about the lack of shots 'for the sake of' shots. It seems like most big films these days give a requisite single establishing shot on location change and then move on. There's little breathing room in the modern blockbuster. Pacing is really where good films become great.

Cameron made avatar, the most base story sci movie released in as long as I can remember and titanic why is he relevant in a Star Wars thread?

Anyway Lego Star Wars is great and there is a scene in the tutorial where they reference Luke on endow seeing the ghosts and they make it a point to have ghost Anakin and ghost Vader.

He's relevant because he's a prominent filmmaker and friend of George Lucas who just commented on the latest Star Wars movie after being asked about it in an interview.

Avatar has a pretty basic story but it also has a clear sense of purpose and is very visually imaginative. I don't care for it that much overall, but I respect it for those reasons, in addition to be being a true passion project rather than a cash grab.

Titanic is a good movie.

He gave an interview where he expressed his opinion that Lucas' six(he specified six) films are more visually interesting than TFA.

I think it's fair to consider Cameron's opinion considering he was responsible for a number of iconic scifi movies.

I do think it's rather unfair to pit a single film against two trilogies in terms of innovative design, especially when said film focuses on resolving post-OT questions instead of establishing grand new environments and locations (although Starkiller and Jakku are still pretty great in this regard).

If we toss in Rogue One, for example, we see a lot of new creative elements because it gets to play with wholly unexplored territory.

Nobody is saying that Cameron's opinion is somehow the definitive final word on TFA, so there's really no need for defensiveness. Its just fun and interesting to hear a director as successful as he is give their opinion on another director's work. Its something that rarely happens, usually they are very hesitant to state any opinion about movies they didn't work on.

But even from turtlecrunch's excerpts that is exactly what he is said: "Uh, I don't want to say too much about the film, so, I also have a lot of respect for JJ Abrams and I want to see where they're taking it next, you know? See what they're doing with it... I have to say that I felt George's group of six films had more innovative visual imagination. This film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before, characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So for me the jury's out, I want to see where they go with it."

He's just flat out saying he wants to wait and see where it goes and won't say too much until then, but right now it's just rehashing stuff from the OT.
