An odd suggestion but Daisy Rock do a lot, there are some that I reckon would be fine for boys on their site https://www.daisyrock.com/products/electric-guitars-basses Also, Squire do some which are really good: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Squier-By-Fender-Mini-Stratocaster-3-4-Size-Electric-Guitar-Red/2RP

He might outgrow a 1/2 scale one pretty quick though, maybe it's worth looking at some 3/4 instruments? A lot of people play those out of choice

My daughter has a Daisy Rock guitar and it is a very well made Korean instrument, just had lovely pickups. Just note that only the "starter packs" are 22.5 inches, but there's a pretty cool looking flying V: https://www.daisyrock.com/products/starter-packs/comet-electric-pack Probably a better bet is one of the 22.5" Squire Strat mini's, like $100 everywhere, they are hardtail too. EFB by Perter Gabriel, just like gotye.

So I recently got a sudden urge to update my guitar a bit, and get some new pickups. Right now I play out of an Agile LP copy with the stock pickups, and I'm heavily looking at a pair of Seymour Duncan Black Winters, but I've yet to find any clips or samples which quite fit my style of play. I heard a while ago that the guitarist of Full of Hell had started using Black Winters so I'm fairly certain they'll be able to fit just about all of my needs, but I'm really curious about how they work with an HM2. Would anyone by chance have any experience with these, or how they sound with an HM2 pedal? A recording would be much appreciated as well, but anything to help my decision would be great.

I have the bridge pickup on my mockingbird that's in standard tuning. It's an awesome pickup for all around distorted stuff and is basically just a SD Distortion with the mids cranked a tiny bit and the presence up. So standard tuning with the HM2 it doesn't quite like it but I bet downtuned it will sound exactly how you want it to. Also I hope you listened to this demo already https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpLpuO-q-To

I did listen that demo already, it just seems like every demo is just some super sterile djent sound, or a super modern black metal sound, like the above demo. Was just looking to hear some other sounds, hardcore, grind, sludge, doom, death metal, etc. This was probably the best demo I've heard so far, but the guy really messed up with the drum mixing which makes it a mess... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnQqzG9cHYs

Ola Englund has one with a dry signal that he compares to a duncan distortion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vc0CGTpAnI and holy poo poo the snare in that video you linked is a loving sonic abortion If you give a poo poo I can record a little sample of the one I have, dry and not in a mix and then in a mix

Just picked up the guitar and without warming up or checking if it was in tune, played the first thing that came to mind: a really bad cover of Frozen by Dissection. https://soundcloud.com/lfranco321/black-winter-demo-frozen/s-xh0NW Same setup as what I always do, literally the same guitar settings just with one channel instead of two and not much effort applied. If you really want I can write up something quickly and actually put a tiny bit more effort into it.

Alright this the same guitar but plugged into a clean boost set up tube screamer into a dimed HM2 into my little egnater tweaker that has the gain dimed, bass dimed, mid at 2:30 (like a clock), treble dimed, and volume at pretty much as low as possible. Then recorded that through an SM57. No other crazy poo poo. This is also like the second time I've ever mic'd this amp and I'm still experimenting with it. Doesn't help that I can't really tell where the cone is so the mic is likely in a goofy spot. https://soundcloud.com/lfranco321/black-winter-demo-hm2/s-BW47g

I think I'll just need to decide now to grab the set or just the bridge, and actually pull the trigger on the purchase.

I complimented it with an SD jazz in the neck, which is basically the best neck pickup ever made. Downtuned the black winters are really awesome though.

I'm not much of a neck/lead/clean player really, but my current neck pickup definitely feels quite meh, and I've heard good things about the neck version, thus why I was looking at just grabbing the set. It's definitely lower on the priority list though. Ideally this is the kind of sound I'm looking for, and hoping the black winters will get me closer to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeOy651hK6Q

BWs are cool as anything and way more versatile than the black metal marketing would tell you. They're very, very great downtuned. Swell fellas who linked good tunes: hell yes that was a great variety

It's different flavors of the same taste which comes down to recording. But now that I think more about it I'm remembering how my les paul sounds only slightly different than the SG through the HM2 and they both are in B standard with EMGs. It's very very subtle, but imo any spicy humbucker through the HM2 sounds almost interchangeable.

What are some good quality strings to buy if I've been playing mostly classic rock/early metal for the past year? Generally speaking I find my biggest issue with my current strings is not getting enough sustain.
