Just FYI three middle class white males at my work have independently used the term 'PC run mad' in a sentence today. One of whom is about to receive his third kid and has spent the last several months in a losing battle with the various governmental assistance bureaucracies w.r.t. getting financial/other help yet thinks the whole thing is blown out of proportion, not JK's fault, he's a decent guy just weird etc.

Butt Wizard posted:There is literally no proof that John Key's "Smear Team" has done anything. There's the infinitely more likely possibility that a lovely gossip columnist may have acted really unethically to get a story. Who else are you counting in his 'smear team'? Fran O'Sullivan or John Roughan at the Herald, one of which said they were ashamed he was PM and the latter who essentially called him a dick? I'm not exactly seeing much positive spin being put on this by anyone but Key, and so badly that he's not convincing anyone. There's no way to spin it positive, the only way to control it is to suggest that the waitress has dodgy motives or is unreliable. The Herald released a next day piece outing the waitress against her will (something already very questionable on its own) and describing her as someone with "strong political points of view", written by a go-to journalist for National's attack dogs. That's just a coincidence? You really think no one in National's PR team had anything to do with that? In general the media are taking this seriously, but you're being naive if you think National aren't trying to play damage control every way they can.

swampland posted:I call bullshit, why would Glucina purposely sabotage herself for Key? I could understand if we were talking about smearing others for him, but the idea she purposely did a shady news item on this somehow knowing that the waitress would post a preemptive story detailing said shadiness is just absurd. Maybe she didn't mean to, but the bullet was passing through and she was in the way. The other option is that the waitress' employers were in on it. Either way, that's the cover now. Glucina hosed up, or was hosed over, so now she's gonna be the focus of every editorial that was gonna be about Key until he gets his quiet, dignified Gallipoli shot.

And you're deliberately ignoring their two infinitely more credible columnists who took Key to the cleaners yesterday as well, just to try and shoe-horn a reference to Dirty Politics in there somehow. I don't doubt that National's PR machine is trying to spin this, but even the NBR is critical of Key and saying he's getting off lightly. Key did something dumb and whatever they're doing isn't working. Occam's Razor says a lovely journalist acted like a lovely journalist and has subsequently got herself and the Herald in a whole swag of poo poo which they are now desperately trying to fix.

With the swarm of articles about this I haven't read them all but the first one I read was that she tried to give him hints it was uncomfortable and then eventually told him up-front and that was that. Now it seems he continually persisted after she asked him to stop? Sorry, but that's far different than what the waitress first said. Blaming it on his wife was one of the jokes he used to pull when doing it IIRC - it wasn't something he did after she asked him to stop. This whole thing is a mess with all the stories coming out, to be honest. Guess I should enjoy Key trying to work his way out of this one - the one thing the media seem to really grill him about...

The problem with the hair thing is that: a) Key should have known better b) the behaviour has been shrugged off as "stuff men do" and "just trying to be friendly" in the same way as rape cases get dismissed c) the victim is being discredited and/or blamed for the whole thing, as if it's some Left Wing Conspiracy that enticed Key into behaving this way and then is now using it as a political attack campaign. If Key had actually acknowledged his behaviour was poor & apologised properly (along with not having people leap to his defence about how he's a good guy really) then this would be a non-issue, outside of the Herald being monumentally stupid.

Usually you say sorry right away, and stop molesting someone. You also don't instantly undercut your apology by saying you were just horsing around like she didn't have the right to call him out on being a creepy hair fetishist.
