I am also a newbie and I pretty much just play La Sera - Love That's Gone. It was the most fun when I tried a bunch on easy score attack so I just decided to focus on it until I unlock the full thing in Learn A Song. Also I can listen to it over and over and never get sick of it.

So I got the urge to try and get a guitar to slowly learn on. I mentioned this to a friend who gave me a couple lessons a while ago and he offered to sell me his (used) Les Paul for ~50$. Not sure on the exact model, apparently it was about 400 new if that helps (I can post pictures as well.) One, major, issue is that the neck was at one point broken, which makes me fairly wary (again, can post pictures to help clarify.) How likely is this to be a terrible idea?

If it is playable and feels good I'd probably go for it, for $50 at least. It's probably a Special II or something (Or not if he paid $400? But pics would help yeah) but that'd be fine to learn on. Gibsons and Epiphones love breaking necks it seems. If it was fixed by any good luthier then you probably won't even notice. But yes, for $50 if it isn't absolutely horrifically repaired or needs something done I'd probably grab it.

If it was fixed properly it might be stronger than it was before. There should probably just be the tiniest visible line at the break. But anyway, a 50$ guitar that you like to play isn't a bad deal.

It's a bit hard to tell from the pictures, but it doesn't look too awful. Try and sight along the fretboard and see if it's straight. If it's straight and the neck seems solid I say go for it. Does it come with the bridge/tailpiece? Otherwise you'll need to buy a new one. And it always a good idea to get it set up at a guitar-store so it plays nice.

Never be afraid of a Les Paul or SG with a broken neck. It's like their cocoon stage before they become better with a simple repair. Unless the neck is warped to gently caress, then it's a major problem.

The broken neck doesn't matter, as long as it's straight, not warped or twisted, and there's nothing that slows down your hand moving on the back of the neck.

Let's talk strings. I had a string snap on me for the first time and while it seems dead simple to replace I was wondering what you more experienced guitar goons would recommend in terms of brand and such. It was the sixth string that snapped but I figure I might as well restring them all. Is that advisable or over kill? I'm mainly using this guitar for Rocksmith so playing a decent assortment of music. Guitar is a Schecter Hellraiser with active pickups if that makes a difference when choosing new strings.

String brand is pretty much all preference. If you're a newer player who just plays in standard I'd just buy a set of 10-46 from whatever brand catches your eye. If you snap a string you might as well restring all of them unless it's only been a day or two since you last changed your strings.

From time to time there are great deals on amazon/ebay for boxes of strings that usually come with a winder or wipes or whatever, so definitely check there too. My buddy just got the first full pics of a custom redwood/ziricote Kiesel he ordered ages ago. It's pretty unbelievable wood porn:    The royal ebony fingerboard looks magical up close. My preferred brand of strings is the best and all others suck. Other people will try and tell you their preferred brand of strings is best and that mine sucks, but they are wrong. And yes, restring the whole thing.

I'd say try out some different strings every time you change, brand wise at least, until you settle on some you love. I personally have used 10-46 for E Standard since I started, I don't like the way 9's feel at all. I used to use Ernie Ball Slinkys, but now I use D'Addario NYXL strings. Their XL strings are great too, I just can get NYXLs pretty cheap around where I am so they're worth the premium of 2 bucks more. Restring the whole thing for sure, and if a particular string keeps snapping @ the head (dunno where it broke) then you might have a burr in your peg that you can get rid of with a little bit of sandpaper.

Having a couple wraps around the peg helps improve tuning stability and since a good tuner is gonna be ~ 18:1 ratio a string winder really helps prevent hand cramps. You can also get a little plastic one from a guitar store for like a dollar. Yeah even if you only change your strings every 3 months or so definitely save yourself a lot of pain and get a winder. I splurged $7 or whatever for the planet waves one that's also a string cutter!

That and most winders I've had over the years are also a combo string clipper so I don't have to go dig through tools to find cutters or whatever. efb

(I think everyone should at least try super light strings once.) Edit: At the very least they're super easy on your hands. I play for 3-4 hours most days of the week and just baaarreeellly have calluses. You can also bend pretty much as far as you want as easily as you want... though it is pretty easy to overbend til you get acclimated. Classical Gas and Possum goes to Prague are what I always end up playing on mine. Not instrumental (though it could be), still trying to nail down Never Going Back Again (Fleetwood Mac) and boy is this song giving me trouble. Every 6 months I give it a half hour and give up. Need to just bite the bullet and not allow myself to play anything else until I have it mastered and out of my life for good
