be right back, gonna stare at the period blood of my weird paradox time daughter who looks like a realdoll and then spend a couple of hours stomping around relatively linear pathways designed by someone who loves steampunk too much all while enjoying the riveting gameplay of switching between two generic weapons and using a wide array of powers that are all lackluster and add nothing of value to the game. powers which only exist because they had to shoehorn the 'bioshock' tie-in into the game somehow and pulled it off very poorly, as you can tell by the piles of magical plasmids sitting around that barely anyone but you uses because they couldn't figure out how to incorporate them into the setting other than the occasional 'special' enemy. by the way, the story is nigh-incomprehensible barring the notes of 'fighting against people who treat you like a commodity makes you just as bad as them' and 'parallel universes or something', all which somehow manages to be much worse than bioshock 2's hamfisted view of socialism being the villain and the last third or so of bioshock 1's story which kind of poo poo the bed in a spectacular fashion despite the previous parts being alright.

Not really, because most of it ran with just a bit of modification in Unreal Tournament, since they're the same engine.

There's actually a decent amount of mods for U1 you can find here and here. Beyond the usual akimbo Automag mutator and co-op mods like jCoopZ, there's some interesting mods, like Serpentine, that adds all-new weapons. UTeamFix lets you add a horde mode to each map and UT-style Domination. RealCTF adds Threewave-style CTF to Unreal with some bot support. The Dynamically Synchronized Particle Collector Cannon mod adds an all new-weapon with a ton of firing modes.

Seriously, and I own the Doom, Daggerfall, and NCR shirts and they're actually really soft, well made t-shirts that fit great. I'm thinking of buying a second Doom shirt for the day when they stop selling them and my first shirt rots to pieces and can't be replaced.

Someone make a better list than RPS', but without the non-FPS stuff like Dishonored and without including games just because you ran out of ideas for really good ones. Don't bother ranking them, I just genuinely don't think I can think of 50 PC FPSes that are truly great.

Well, what exactly is the difference between a FPS with RPG elements and an RPG with FPS elements? I assume most people would be fine with saying that Borderlands is a FPS, but would Dead Island be a FPS? On paper they are mechanically quit similar. What about Shadow Warrior 2014? That pretty firmly a FPS even though you use a sword %90 of the time. Does that mean Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a FPS to? Sure the player mostly uses melee weapons, but it's possible to 'shoot' Cross bows and Long Bows.

I mean, I know this is an old discussion but it's kind of neat to hear where people draw the line nowadays.

Dead Island is first person Diablo and you spend 99% of the game hitting things with lead pipes rather than shooting them with guns. Borderlands is first person Diablo, but you spend 90% of the game shooting people with guns. Shadow Warrior 2013 nominally has guns you're supposed to use, even though they're utter garbage, whereas Chivalry is primarily a first-person melee combat game.

I don't think it's very hard to tell the two apart, and the point is to have games that make the list because the shooting in them is really good, not because they happen to have guns and a first-person view (see also: Dishonored, which is a great game but not an FPS).

e; I mean, here, if you really feel like this is needed: for the purposes of this list an FPS is a first-person game where you spend the majority of combat shooting people with ranged weapons. A good FPS is one where the shooting is good (whether it's because the level-, enemy- or weapon design is good).

Neither is House of the Deaf but that made the list.

I think to be an FPS you have to have direct control over your character (not on rails), have some form of projectile weapon, and have shooting be functional and the main focus of the gameplay (so not Skyrim et al).

Here's a top ten that I came up with after twenty minutes or so:

  • DOOM
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Half-Life
  • Quake
  • SiN
  • Wolfenstein 3D
  • Painkiller
  • Descent
  • Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
  • Unreal

The core aesthetic of an FPS is shooting mans, and the ability to grind your way towards better/faster/more precise ways of shooting mans does not change that aesthetic. The core aesthetic of an RPG is the creation of a character according to your whims and guiding that particular build through some form of narrative where your choices matter — neither a visual presentation of the world through a first person view nor the existence of shooting as one of the choices available to you alters that aesthetic.

…broadly speaking.

You've probably seen his work all over the place. Once you know his style it's unmistakable - he's done bits for Adult Swim, Channel 4 (UK), ads for Coke and such, and a bunch of official music videos.

His musical style is also unmistakable. Terrifying malfunctioning circus music, for the most part.

Mapsets

Memento Mori I and II are the obvious ones for good co-op Dooming. Also check out Community Chest 4, Hellbound (though the gameplay's a little bland in that one), Frozen Time, and Epic 1+2.

Mods

Honestly, there aren't too many great co-op mods out there. The ones that come to mind immediately are (G)ZDoom only, which doesn't exactly have the most easy to use or reliable multiplayer mode. If you do go down the (G)ZDoom route, check out Reelism (by our own The Kins!), Hideous Destructor (to get your ultra hard tacti-cool poo poo on), and Russian Overkill (:ussr:+:happyelf:). Zandronum-side is not as good (their idea of co-op fun tends towards "Ram our heads against a wall of enemies that would make nuts.wad blush until they're all dead. Also, the enemies can all fire BFG shots."), but check out Terminusest13's mods, Samsara (for kicking rad co-op with all your old school FPS hero favorites (unless you like Unreal, because Term stopped working on Samsara before that games heroine could be implemented no I'm not bitter why do you ask)) and Demonsteele (for :black101: :hf:  :hf: :commissar:).

All of these except Hideous Destructor have a Zandronum version (with odd bugs sometimes.)

Reelism works pretty well and has a lobby area after each wave, though sometimes a player spawns "stuck"
Russian Overkill works perfectly except it'll cause your host computer to loving melt.
