If human civilization imbalances the ecosystem to favor one species in the absence of its natural predators, like feral hogs, then there's a moral duty to kill some hogs. You can't just wring your hands and get bogged down in the moral uncertainty of dealing with a pestilence. I doubt any of these city slicker writers ever wring their hands over rat poison or fly swatters.

Technically true, in that the "rigorous scientific" definition of "species" frequently doesn't match up to actual species distinctions we draw and there's millions of fuzzy lines there. And the entire concept of species pretty much exists to backfit modern biology to Aristotle's categorization fetish.
