theacox posted:This is my first gauntlet. Can anyone give some sort of overview as to how this works? You play 40 games with the three other teams in your bracket, the two best teams from that advance to the next round and the two worst are relegated, repeat with the next bracket up until only two teams are left. So the worse you are, the more rounds you have to beat to stay alive.

theacox posted:This is my first gauntlet. Can anyone give some sort of overview as to how this works? Sure! The Gauntlet for this season will have nine rounds. In the first round, the four worst teams will play a 40 game miniseason, playing each of the other teams in the round 13 or 14 times. The two teams with the best records will move on to the next round. The bottom two will be relegated forever. In the next round, the two best teams from round one will face the two next-worst teams in the same 40 game miniseason and, again, the top two will move on, while the bottom two are relegated. This process continues until the final round where the team with the best record will be granted a place in Super-League VIII, while the other three teams are relegated. Of course, this might have to change slightly depending on whether teams drop out of the Expansion Cup or whatever. The Gauntlet updates will alternate with playoff updates, and so there will be a Gauntlet update every other day. Injuries do not carry over from the regular season, nor do they carry on between rounds, so you should be at full strength at all times.

F.A.Q Super Auction for the EC? Q. Are Super Auction players eligable for the EC A. No, but you don't lose the players you bid either. The changes will be made to your roster after the EC is complete Q. Will I have the players for the Super League A. Yes, next season you will have the players. You'll also get your guys from the Expansion Draft. Q. Can I bribe you into doing it before the end of the EC? A. Look, I might do it, it's just a time commitment and I don't want to promise something I cannot do. Editing in players takes loving ages to get right and I'm not very good at it. I'll do it if I can find the time. Smasher, I'm trying to set my playoff rotation to this: Mathewson Pedro Walter Curt I don't care if Pedro and walter are swapped. Please make this happen. I think for that to happen I need to: Disable List Mathewson Ted Lilly to LR Pedro comes in as number 2. Curt schilling comes in at number 3. DL Carlton Then for the playoffs we should be up to slide in the rested Mathewson and move everyone else down a slot? Cthulhu Dreams fucked around with this message at 05:07 on Nov 14, 2012 |

No games of the week this time, mainly because there were no real good games to write up. Instead, playoff previews! Dynamo League First Round Series: Burma Imperialists vs. Rockford Losers Burma Imperialists Owner: Viscount Slim (3rd Season as Owner) Location: Mandalay Bay, Burma Home Grounds: Old Moulmein Park Playoff History Super-League VI Lost to Finger-Bangers 1-3 in DLDS Team Overview Rudyard Kipling posted:Comes now, to search your manhood You can't talk about the Imperialists without talking about competence. The Imperialists are not a great team, they have holes in their infield, a rather unimpresive outfield, a rotation that always seems to be down a starting pitcher, and a bullpen that is erratic at best, a powderkeg at worst. Even more telling, their two division titles have come against inferior competition. The shell of the Phantoms were the best team he faced in Super-League VI, and they sold off most of their best assets towards the end of that season, effectively conceding the Memento Mori Division. This season, he faced the lukewarm Bulldogs, the apathetic Saints, and the Denny Rainwater-infused Postmodernists, not exactly the sternest competition. But, you know what, he won last season, and he won this season and, as much as you might want to denigrate those achievements, they still are achievements. The Imperialists weren't great, but they were good enough. They didn't self-destruct, they didn't underachieve, they took care of their business and got a couple of a playoff berths because of it. And, in the end, that's really the best an owner can do for his team. The core of his lineup is the Berkman/Edmonds/Bagwell power trio that provide his lineup with the walks and home runs they rely on to survive. The top of the lineup, Henderson and Collins get on base and make sure that the power bats get plenty of RBI opportunities and steal a few bases. The bottom third is just merely adequate, with the catcher and third base platoons providing some production while Placido Polanco...is there. Defensively, it's a solid, if not exactly great, squad, with Edmonds being great and everyone else being at least decent for their positions. The rotation for the playoffs will probably be Smith/Sutton/Greinke/Messersmith, which should also be decent enough. Not overpowering, especially compared to the team they'll be facing, but a good group nonetheless. Rockford Losers Owner: ToiletofSadness (3rd Season as Owner) Location: Rockford, IL Home Grounds: Rockford Municipal Stadium Playoff History Super-League V Lost to Fukuoka Finger-Bangers 1-3 in DLDS Super-League VI Defeated Florida Oranges 3-2 in DLDS Lost to Fukuoka Finger-Bangers 1-4 in DLCS Team Overview Sun Tzu posted:Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate. You can't talk about the Losers without talking about controlling one's own fate. For all of the discussion about Marauder's swindles, and Beet's strategies, and Viscount Slim's fortune, not much has been said about ToiletofSadness's roster moves. This is despite the fact that he's now made the playoffs in each of his first three seasons, and has had the best record in the Dynamo League in both Super-League VI and VII. But ToiletofSadness has never been satisfied about just building a great team, he's slowly been sure been honing his team to make it better, step by step. Unlike other owners, ToiletofSadness has never been about making a lot of moves, or that many blockbusters. Instead, each roster move he makes is deliberate, focused. Flipping McDowell for Drysdale, building up enough assets to bid for Satchel Paige, challenging for Joe Cronin and so on. When the opportunity arose to make a great deal, ToiletofSadness made sure that he closed the deal, devoting all of his team's energies to making sure he got what he wanted for his team. Otherwise, though, ToiletofSadness was content to let his team play, confident that he had put them in a position to succeed, confident that, over time, the roster he had built would carry his team over the peaks and valleys of luck. In terms of gameplay, the Losers are built around a consistent offense and devastating pitching. The Losers' lineup is good, but hardly overpowering. Its job is not to carry the team, instead, it's only there to ensure that it puts enough runs on the board to let the pitching do its work. And that is where the true power of the Losers lies. Drysdale, Seaver, Paige and Ryan form the most dominant starting rotation in the league, with both Drysdale and Paige recording over 20 wins this season. These are power pitchers first and foremost. They don't pitch to contact, they don't induce groundballs and let the defense do their job for them, they get on the mound and they strike batters out. In the end, the Losers make no compromises. They don't want to trust the vagaries of fielding, so they use power pitching and power hitting. Their greatness must not be allowed to be the result of fickle fortune, instead, like their roster, their greatness must be designed and brought into being through careful planning. Position-by-Position Breakdown Catcher Darrell Porter (BUR) (.260/.344/.450, 12 HRs) Carlton Fisk (BUR) (.258/.326/.465, 14 HRs) vs. Joe Torre (ROC) (.280/.327/.404, 10 HRs) Victor Martinez (ROC) (.280/.328/.362, 2 HRs) The Porter/Fisk platoon has been electric this season, with both catchers doing a great job at the plate and being solid in the field. Torre and Martinez haven't been bad either, but they lack the power of Porter/Fisk. EDGE: Imperialists First Baseman Jeff Bagwell (BUR) (.240/.327/.393, 21 HRs) vs. Frank Thomas (ROC) (.300/.369/.458, 14 HRs, 34 2Bs) This was the great first baseman debate of the '90s, and I think that most sabermetricians eventually concluded that Bagwell was probably the superior player, especially since Thomas couldn't really play defense. But, in the Super-League, it's pretty clear who wins this round, even with the Big Hurt's injury-abbreviated season. EDGE: Losers Second Baseman Eddie Collins (BUR) (.310/.388/.386, 22 2Bs, 22 SBs) vs. Pete Rose (ROC) (.292/.337/.385, 22 2Bs) The number may make this appear superficially close, but Collins is a legit second baseman, while Rose is just a guy who played second base. He also has the better on-base and power numbers, which, to be fair, isn't particularly surprising, sine Rose was always a guy looking to make contact over everything else. EDGE: Imperialists Third Baseman Eddie Mathews (BUR) (.209/.289/.373, 21 HRs) Matt Williams (BUR) (.263/.336/.441, 5 HRs) vs. Kevin Youkilis (ROC) (.260/.313/.418, 11 HRs, 35 2Bs) Someday, I'll figure out exactly why everyone who plays third base for the Imperialists immediately collapses into abject mediocrity or worse. Mathews and Williams are just the latest victims. Youk will be back for the playoffs, and even with his middling stats, I'll still take him over two guys who are apt to combine for about 27 Ks in the first round series. EDGE: Losers Shortstop Placido Polanco (BUR) (.277/.306/.352, 12 2Bs) vs. Miguel Tejada (ROC) (.352/.374/.511, 4 HRs in 182 ABs) Is death an option? First, let's throw away Tejada's stats, because they're over a tiny sample size. He's not really that good of a hitter, not even with all of the PEDs in the world. That said, he's not going up against stiff competition. Polanco isn't a great hitter, and he's not even a real shortstop. This is a position of weakness for both teams, but I hate Tejada less. EDGE (by default): Losers Left Fielder Rickey Henderson (BUR) (.308/.423/.396, 35 SBs) vs. Tris Speaker (ROC) (.293/.358/.416, 41 2Bs, 14 3Bs) Interesting. Henderson has drawn a ton of walks, but is a significantly worse as a fielder. Although, to be fair, just about every outfielder in history is significantly worse than Speaker. Still, that's a hell of an OBP by Rickey, and that tips the scale for me. EDGE: Imperialists Center Fielder Jim Edmonds (BUR) (.272/.357/.509, 32 HRs) vs. Oscar Charleston (ROC) (.280/.341/.471, 25 HRs) This is close, because Edmonds is playing in a much better environment for hitters than Charleston, who has to play in a big, cold stadium for his home games. If they both played in run-neutral stadiums, Charleston would probably hit for more home runs. Plus, Charleston is a better fielder, although Edmonds is drat good as well. The numbers say one thing, but my brain tells me another. EDGE: Losers Right Fielder Lance Berkman (BUR) (.300/.381/.512, 19 HRs, 44 2Bs) vs. Frank Robinson (ROC) (.313/.378/.544, 33 HRs) Berkman is nice, but Frank Robinson was just devastating this year. EDGE: Losers Starting Pitchers Hilton Smith (BUR) (18-6, 2.37 ERA, 224.1 IP, 125 Ks) Don Sutton (BUR) (16-9, 2.98 ERA, 217.2 IP, 99 Ks) Zack Greinke (BUR) (14-8, 3.83 ERA, 173.2 IP, 139 Ks) Andy Messersmith (BUR) (7-8, 4.19 ERA, 169.2 IP, 119 Ks) vs. Don Drysdale (ROC) (22-6, 3.09 ERA, 215.1 IP, 143 Ks) Tom Seaver (ROC) (11-8, 3.28 ERA, 208.1 IP, 128 Ks) Satchel Paige (ROC) (20-5, 1.83 ERA, 202.0 IP, 213 Ks) Nolan Ryan (ROC) (12-11, 4.23 ERA, 191.2 IP, 185 Ks) The Imperialists probably have the 2nd best rotation of the playoff teams in the Dynamo League. But the Losers have the best one. Smith and Sutton are a dominating 1-2 punch, but the quality drops off quickly after that, while the Losers roll four deep. EDGE: Losers Bullpen Jonathan Papelbon (BUR) (0-5, 2.20 ERA, 65.1 IP, 63 Ks, 35 Svs) vs. John Smoltz (ROC) (4-5, 4.29 ERA, 92.1 IP, 60 Ks, 15 Svs) Papelbon had the better season, but the rest of the Imperialists' bullpen is made up of guys like Mike Timlin and Alan Embree, and while I'm sure that impresses you if you're a Red Sox fan, it leaves me cold, especially since the Losers also have John Wetteland and Randy Myers (who, admittedly, didn't have a great season, but is still a good reliever). The Finger-Bangers have won three of the last four Dynamo League Championships. They have won the Sic Transit Vir Division three straight times. They are soon to see the Juggernauts and Unicorns, their former rivals, buried forever. They gain more and more elite players every year. They have already won the Super-League once, can they do it again? But the end of their story has already been written. Some day, perhaps at the end of this season, perhaps many seasons down the line, they will win the Super-League again and face the Macho Men in one last, titanic battle to decide the fate of the Super-League once and for all. Everything up to then is just killing time. Dubai Dervishes Owner: Beet (2nd Season as Owner) Location: Dubai, UAE Home Grounds: Burj Stadium Playoff History Super-League VI Lost to Florida Oranges 0-1 in Wildcard Playoff Team Overview Edward Said posted:Every empire, however, tells itself and the world that it is unlike all other empires, that its mission is not to plunder and control but to educate and liberate. You can't talk about the Dervishes without talking about cohesion. Individually, the pieces of the Dervishes don't seem to work. Ozzie Smith doesn't hit enough to start for a good Super-League team. An old Gaylord Perry and Wes Ferrell aren't key parts of a good starting rotation. But it has worked for the past two seasons, mainly because, more than any other contender, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The defense allows the pitching to succeed, which, in turn, allows for the offense to get by with its relatively weak bats. Every piece of the team works in harmony with the other pieces, creating a resonance that propels the Dervishes far beyond where they should seem to go. Of course, this can only go so far. The Dervishes' pitchers, with the exception of Bob Gibson, are not that impressive, and Stan Musial and Buck Leonard are the only truly elite hitters the Dervishes have. That's not to say that the Dervishes' successes are smoke and mirrors, but it does raise question about what will happen when they run into a team that simply has more talent than them. The Dervishes are the youngest team in the Dynamo League playoffs, in only their second season. Last year, they lost the wildcard playoff to the Florida Oranges in a disappointing end to a largely triumphant season. This time around, the Dervishes will have an opportunity to prove that they truly belong among the elite of the Super-League. Position-by-Position Breakdown Catcher Yogi Berra (NYF) (.306/.344/.440, 10 HRs) Thurman Munson (NYF) (.341/.409/.390, 2 2Bs in 82 ABs) vs. Johnny Bench (DUB) (.274/.326/.429, 20 HRs) Marauder's platoon worked pretty well, with a BA well over .300, which is impressive even if BA is an imperfect stat, but Johnny Bench was superior defensively and offensively. EDGE: Dervishes First Baseman Frank Thomas (NYF) (.236/.318/.401, 18 HRs) Buck Leonard (DUB) (.278/.357/.479, 23 HRs, 34 2Bs) The Big Hurt was hurt for a lot of the year, and so didn't have a chance to bulk up his numbers. Even still, Buck Leonard is the better player, with a better bat, and the ability to actually play first base without looking completely ridiculous, which Thomas never could manage. EDGE: Dervishes Second Baseman Nap Lajoie (NYF) (.304/.342/.421, 45 2Bs, 21 SBs) vs. Joe Morgan (DUB) (.251/.336/.401, 32 2Bs, 17 HRs, 16 SBs) Lajoie seems, at first blush, the better offensive player, but not by a lot, as he has almost no home run power while Morgan hit 17 home runs. Morgan also stole his bases at a much higher percentage than Lajoie. Oh, and Morgan was also a much, much better defensive player than Lajoie. Sometimes, looks can be deceiving. EDGE: Dervishes Third Baseman Edgar Martinez (NYF) (.257/.319/.400, 34 2Bs) vs. Tony Perez (DUB) (.289/.327/.454, 7 HRs in 194 ABs) A weak spot for both teams. My inclination is to give this to Martinez because neither is really all that great at defense, and I think Martinez is a better hitter. EDGE: Bangers Shortstop Pop Lloyd (NYF) (.292/.343/.420, 30 2Bs) vs. Ozzie Smith (DUB) (.251/.310/.303, 23 2Bs) Defense can overcome a lot, but it can't overcome Lloyd's numbers. EDGE: Bangers Left Fielder Barrinald Bonds (NYF) (.206/.315/.387, 15 HRs in 354 ABs) vs. Joe Jackson (DUB) (.304/.343/.429, 49 2Bs, 13 3Bs) Bonds has been out for a while, and even though his numbers are lower, I'll talking his super-elite power and patience over Joe Jackson's super-elite contact skills. I didn't want to, but the voice of Bill James told me that he'd destroy me if I didn't. Oh, and this is the rare matchup where Bonds is actually the less morally suspect player as well. Good for him. EDGE: Bangers Center Fielder Duke Snider (NYF) (.286/.343/.494, 20 HRs) Eric Davis (NYF) (.218/.268/.364, 8 HRs) vs. Earl Averill (DUB) (.260/.316/.415, 37 2Bs, 10 3Bs, 15 HRs) I'm not sure that the platoon is really helping the Bangers all that much but, even with it, Snider is still outperforming Averill by a fair margin. Right Fielder Ted Williams (NYF) (.320/.408/.537, 25 HRs, 33 2Bs) vs. Stan Musial (DUB) (.291/.354/.471, 41 2Bs, 10 3Bs, 20 HRs) The two greatest hitters of their era. Williams can't field, but has the superior bat, and had the much better numbers this season. EDGE: Bangers Starting Pitchers Orel Hershiser (NYF) (8-5, 2.71 ERA, 139.1 IP, 83 Ks) Nolan Ryan (NYF) (5-6, 4.92 ERA, 106.0 IP, 88 Ks) Joe Williams (NYF) (5-6, 3.75 ERA, 134.1 IP, 55 Ks) Addie Joss (NYF) (16-6, 2.46 ERA, 234.0 IP, 84 Ks) vs. Bob Gibson (DUB) (13-7, 3.03 ERA, 258.0 IP, 179 Ks) Gaylord Perry (DUB) (16-8, 3.23 ERA, 236.2 IP, 123 Ks) Roy Oswalt (DUB) (9-9, 4.37 ERA, 197.2 IP, 167 Ks) Burleigh Grimes (DUB) (16-6, 3.45 ERA, 203.2, 67 Ks) A very odd matchup. The Bangers' rotation has been ravaged by injuries this year, making it hard to know exactly how good they really. For what it's worth, Joss, the only member of the rotation to play anything close to a full season, was pretty fantastic. You could make the argument that the Dervishes' starters only look better because they have a great defense behind them and the Bangers' pitchers have been hurt by their terrible defense. Then again, both teams will be playing this next series with the same defenses they had in the regular season. EDGE: Dervishes Bullpen Rollie Fingers (NYF) (9-5, 2.65 ERA, 85.0 IP, 63 Ks, 33 Svs) vs. Rollie Fingers (DUB) (7-8, 3.14 ERA, 71.2 IP, 43 Ks, 21 Svs) Since both are Fingers, I'll go with the one with the superior stats. EDGE: Bangers Team Statistics Analysis See you next season! Analysis Let's hope that my bullish prediction of your rotation is more accurate than your own dreary view on it. Analysis Good luck, because the Losers are the better team. Analysis I don't know what happened, but I do know that you're almost certain to cruise for about five rounds in the Gauntlet before running into trouble. Analysis Are you the favorites against the Bangers? My heart says you are, but my head keeps looking at that loving lineup. Bonds, Williams, Thomas and Lloyd? That's a lot, maybe too much. Analysis Well, now that you're done loving around with your rotation, I expect you to have a good Gauntlet run. Do your hellish state proud, oldskool. Analysis Not your most impressive seasons, although you can put a lot of that on your bizarrely fragile rotation. Still, for all of the Sturm und Drang, you're back in the playoffs. I would consider flipping Bonds or Williams for pitching help, though...or asking me to flip the Bangers into the Smasher League and the Phoenixes into the Dynamo League. Analysis I love your team for some reason, and I'd be sad to see it go. Don't make me sad, Archie. Analysis The great experiment is over. Thank God. Analysis And the Postmodernists will take their Intercontinental title into the Gauntlet! Analysis So loving close. Then again, all you need to do is win one round of the Gauntlet to survive. Analysis SUPERBAS AREN'T THE WORST IN THEIR LEAGUE! PARTY TIME! Analysis Impressive season. See you in Super-League VIII. Analysis Show them what Rockford is made out of! Wait, scratch that, showing them misery and freezing rain wouldn't help at all. Show them something good instead. Analysis As CM Punk's title reign goes, so goes the Saints. Analysis Actually, the Bearers aren't completely dead. Just mostly dead. Standings and Leaders FINAL Playoffs/Gauntlet Seedings

OK let's send down....I dunno, Kevin Brown. Put in Santana in his place & go a three-man rotation of Pedro/Clemens/Santana for all Gauntlet rounds.

Might as well get this started too: Pick 'em: A Way of Life Expansion Owners! Want another dispersal draft pick? Want that pick to be in the sandwich round between the first and second round? Well, then maybe we can work something out. The Pick 'em contest runs during the postseason. For each playoff series and each Gauntlet round, you will pick winners. For bonus points, you can also pick the number of games each playoff series will end in as well as the score of the final game. There's a scoring system that goes along with it, and gingemidget, who will be running the contest, can tell you all about it. At the moment, however, what's more important is that you get your picks in. Pick 'em! Now! Pick the winners, games and final score! second team in each matchup has home-field advantage Burma Imperialists vs. Rockford Losers Fukuoka Finger-Bangers vs. Dubai Dervishes Finger Lakes Phoenixes vs. Ryleh Cultists South Bolton Eazy W's vs. Chicago Bobbleheads Pick two teams to advance! Why are people using 4 or 3 (?!) man rotations for the gauntlet? Is this a viable strategy?

For whatever reason, probably because of all the travel days, the fifth starter almost never gets used in the Gauntlet. 3, well, I don't know about that. And thanks, Smasher, I've survived the Gauntlet with a scrubbier team, I'll try not to disappoint.

Gauntlet rounds are 40 games, and IIRC injuries don't carry over between rounds due to having to manually set up each round in its own BM instance. Personally I'm gambling that my top 3 pitchers in rotation on consistently short rest are going to be better in the 25% of games my #4 would've pitched in them.
