I will confess,
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth.

Real talk: I thought when they were gonna move the setting to Andromeda, they'd be more willing to do something different with the aliens. The Angara being weird cat-lizard Afrikaners just feels uninspired and kinda lazy. They even use a first name-last name naming scheme. Is it so hard to develop something interesting about one of the cornerstones of your exploration game?

It's so magical living in the future where we can pronounce a game DOA before it is even available to play.

I hope the game makes me happy because I'm not a broken person who lives on schadenfreude, but also now I hope it sells a billion copies just to clear the self-satisfied fart-huffers.

Combat is pretty good, but there is blatant level scaling wrt abilities. You will not be able to bring down a Thunderjaw (the big trex looking robots) until you have specced pretty hard into combat skills and have a bigger HP pool. You just wont be able to do enough damage to it to not die to getting loving wrecked by its many ways to kill the poo poo out of you.

If nothing else is, this is a clear indication that Bioware is largely different than the company of 10-20 years ago: the gameplay is quite good, but the story holds back the game.

It's funny. Mass Effect 2 took place in the same galaxy, added more new sapient species than Andromeda, and made them considerably more interesting.

Like the vorcha are short lived and ultra adaptable, which makes people treat them basically like vermin? That's kind of neat. If you had a vorcha companion, he or she could probably add a lot to the squad dynamics. The drell have the memory thing, that lead to some distinct scenes with Thane, and their dynamic with the hanar is complicated enough to be fun, and the yahg were a solid "does not play well with others" species concept. You had some new toys, even though the first game set up the whole citadel council set to play with.

The new species in this game... do not have those virtues.

This is not actually true. It will take longer but you can do it. I killed a Stormbird at level 12 immediately after the intro opens up the world and before I had any good skills or weapons. It's a heavily skill-based game and once you start getting decent gear/abilities the game gets super easy.

My expectations for AAA games are perpetually in the gutter so I think I'll like it okay enough. If I don't, well, I would have spent the money on wine or drugs or guitar pedals or something equally dumb anyway!

But yeah seriously everyone buy Horizon, it's the best new IP in forever.

So there are really only 3 new species in the game, one of it characterless robots unlike the Geth? And we also lost about 8 of the known ones on the other hand for it? Sounds like a great exchange to tell a more interesting story!

Yeah, that's what I'm reading from them as well. I don't care about the scores but rather what the reviews actually say and it seems that the things that don't work in the game are the same things I considered important in ME 1-3.

One of the few common links between reviews is that yeah there are only 4 planets but they really are big and fun to explore and full of decent stuff to do. Imagine 4 Breath of the Wilds in one game :eyepop:

Weird aliens make for the best sci-fi. Check out Blindsight if you want a nerdy rear end book with some enjoyable ideas for some completely unlike life as we know it aliens. Shame that every ME alien is pretty much just a sci-fi trope.
