Just to be sure; your motherboard won’t support DDR4; if you mean upgrading memory versus a new system in a few years carry on.

Consider changing your PSU choice to this (it carries a 12 year warranty if bought before 12/31): https://pcpartpicker.com/product/dMM323/evga-supernova-g3-750w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-220-g3-0750
And your RAM to this (it's CAS 15 vs. 16, which means it's just a bit faster and likely to behave better with Ryzen): https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2skwrH/corsair-memory-cmk16gx4m2b3000c15r
And lastly, case-wise, I'd probably recommend this: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/JsKcCJ/fractal-design-meshify-c-mini-dark-tg-microatx-mini-tower-case-fd-ca-mesh-c-mini-bko-tgd

Should still keep you under $800.

If you're doing some sort of work on it that you specifically think would benefit from 16 then it might make sense, but if you're talking about games I question how much benefit going from 8 to 16GB will be with a quad-core chip that's locked to 3.4GHz max turbo.

2600 at 145$ is the hotter deal, less cores, higher frequency. I would recommend the next higher same brand cooler for a quieter setup. Consider a couple nice case fans for the same reason.

Switched the CPU and got this compatibility error. "Some AMD X370 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Pinnacle Ridge CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions." Is this anything to be concerned about or is there another motherboard recommendation that wouldn't cause this problem?

Thanks for the help.

X470/B450 boards came out with/following Pinnacle Ridge and would all have the microcode already to run 2000-series processors, although it may be the case that most X370 boards still in the supply chain have been updated with it anyway since Pinnacle Ridge has been out for a while now.

If your PC doesn't boot you can contact AMD and they will mail you a loaner processor to get your PC bios updated to be compatible with the Pinnacle Ridge CPUs. You then mail the loaner back to them.

That's if it doesn't work out of the box. The boards on shelves now should all have updated BIOS at this point.

Really appreciate the feedback and all of the help. I have modified the build a little. I have to say, going a little higher than I anticipated. Roughly at $1,900. Was trying to shoot for $1,500 (hoping Black Friday or Cyber Monday brings the price down. Is there any place I could downgrade without compromising performance? Again looking to do some VR stuff down the line. Would like to stream every now and then. Main game I am playing now is MH:W and it is using 100% of my CPU and GPU.

GPU: Asus - GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB Dual Video Card $800. Is ASUS still a good brand for GPU or is there something better? I have always gone with ASUS for GPUs.

Make sure the NH-D15 won't intrude on the first PCI-E slot. The NH-D15S is basically the same cooler but is offset away from the first slot (also only one fan, but you can add another one later for minimal effect) to help with compatibility on MATX motherboards. In the Mini C you won't want to have to put the vid card into the second PCI-E slot, it'd be very close to the PSU shroud

The big question to ask is, is the corsair 3000mhz on your QVL for your mainboard? if it is, you should be ok. If not, and the other RAM is, pick something that is on the QVL when cutting back.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
I'm trying to decide if it'd be worth upgrading my CPU instead of building a whole new system. I assume the answer is no, but I just wanted to check first. This has been a great system for my needs. I was able to play most games at 1080p/60fps, but lately newer games are having lots of issues, and I think the CPU is the bottleneck. Ideally, I'd love to just buy a $50-150 (used?) quad-core CPU and pop it in, but I know that might be throwing good money after bad. I can't really justify the time and expense of a brand new system right now, so it's either this or nothing for the time being.

I've noticed a lot of the quad core 1155 CPUs have a slightly slower clock speed than my 3225. Would that be a noticeable downgrade, or would the extra cores make up for the performance loss?

I don't plan on doing any extreme overclock but I am wondering if 550w is too little for those parts.

For anyone else with this question, I've found this estimator to be pretty reasonable. 550 watt is generally fine unless you're running multiple graphics cards or have some other unique circumstance.

Look up benchmarks for games you're struggling to play, with your GPU. Are they higher than yours? You're CPU limited. The same? That's all your GPU is going to do.
Your card is roughly on-par with a 1050, which is a card you'll need to compromise with to play 1080p games released recently (maybe medium settings or so).
If you can find an i7 3770 for a reasonable price (the non K holds value less easily) it should help you a lot. You may still be looking at something like a Radeon 580 to enjoy the latest games though.

Looks good... Could go to a 2600x and/or a bigger heatsink!

Thanks. went with both. Any recommendations/deals that folks have seen on good IPS panels 27-32"?

The two I added below are what I found, not sure which one is preferable or if I should get something completely different. $350-500 is my range for monitors.

Milk's on them.

Will cases come with the requisite wires and cables and everything to hook up an SSD, motherboard, etc. or do I have to buy those separately?

Your components will come with all the required wires/connectors/screws, etc. The main power cable and connecting power cables will be packaged with the PSU, hard drive cables will come with your motherboard, and your case's front audio/usb ports/power button connector cables will typically come pre-installed.

Some questions before I pull the trigger on the new PC:

  • What's the best option for getting a copy of Windows? I'm not a student anymore, so that option is out.
  • Is there any reason I shouldn't buy from Amazon over this source?

Should I do the same for this build? Specifically, with that RAM?:

Case: Cooler Master - N200 MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($39.99 @ SuperBiiz)

I don't have personal experience with the N200, but that open side grill and the large mesh on the front panel make me a little concerned that it might end up sucking in a lot of dust (depending on your environment, of course). If that's a concern, you can buy a dust filter kit, but it has mixed reviews and doesn't come with a side panel filter for some reason (though you could repurpose the rear panel filter). Alternatively, the Fractal Design Focus G Mini is only $20 more (the price of the filter kit) and is a solid product well equipped with dust filters. It does come with LED fans and a window, though apparently the fans aren't very bright - that could be a plus or a minus.

E: No one answered your Windows question! The best way to get windows 10 is to either reuse an old windows 10 or windows 7 key if you have one (you'll probably have to call support to activate it, and windows 10 can be activated with a windows 7 key), or buy a windows 7 pro key and use it to activate windows 10. SAMart has Win7 Pro keys for $25, or you can find them cheaper (and riskier) on the grey market.

WTF?
Any ideas why PCPP doesn't always show Amazon's price? For example, I've got a Ryzen 5 2600 on my list, but it's only showing Walmart, Newegg, SuperBiiz, and PCM, even though Amazon has it in stock.

Dis is amazing!
I gotta try dis!

EVGA's black friday sales are pretty good. If you're buying a power supply I'd consider getting one from them:
https://www.evga.com/products/feature.aspx
The ones to buy are the 650 Watt G1+ for $49.99, 750 Watt G1+ for $59.99, 1000 Watt GQ for $79.99, 1300 Watt G2 for $99.99 (it's not their best PSU but if you need that much power it's an amazing price). There's some video cards and bundles, too, but I'm mostly looking at the power supplies since every new build needs one.
