there is this thing called "having your team play like a team" that portugal lacks. Also they have way to loving many old and broken players. Players just holding up the ball for 3 seconds at a time to decide where to pass...

Pepe is the only reason this match wasn't close. Portugal was doing fine, even if they were behind, until that idiocy. People that still think Portugal is Ronaldo+10 weren't paying attention.

yeah, it was Ronaldo + 9 men for most of the match

I met with people i hadn't seen for almost half a year today and what a way to have a joyous occasion with old friends than Portugal's starting match in the World Cup! Still better than pumping yourself up in the middle of Lisbon just to see Benfica flop hilariously in the Europa final The game was terribly conditioned by an over sensitive and biased ref and dive-happy Germans. Muller was a bitch beta who when confronted by an actual man like Pepe tried to jump and act tough but still couldn't remove the whiny bitch look from his eyes. Unfortunately, in 2014 Pepe can't approach an opposition player and confront him for being a diving oval office because tassa red. In 2018 defenders will be forced to warn someone before they tackle and they can't ever take either foot from the ground in doing so, for that might injure the poor attacking baby's feelings. We also got a clear penalty ignored, possibly the cleanest, clearest penalty that could've been marked so far in the World Cup. That doesn't excuse the fact that, for being such a whiny baby, Muller still made a meal out of us. Nor the fact that Bruno Alves and Pepe were loving lost and forced Joao Pereira to act as CB with expected results. It doesn't explain why, with so many loving Germans dogpilling Ronaldo, Nani and Coentrao couldn't exploit the extra room, in fact they did the opposite, they loving collided during attacks. Doesn't excuse starting Almeida, but props for trying out Éder, since at least he's not Postiga. And where the gently caress is William Caralho? And how come Meireles was only noticable because of his (impeccable to be fair) beard? The Germans played like a team, never looked in trouble and beat us to a pulp. However, don't lose hope, the Germans also destroyed us at La Lys yet there we were in 1918 celebreating our victory over the Germans. We did it then and we'll do it now, possibly with the Americans by our side. After watching the U.S. - Ghana match i can say that both teams are pretty good, the U.S. showed quality in the attack (imagine if they had a fit Jozy!) and Ghana are physical beasts who would humiliate the Americans if they knew how to put the ball in the net. Without Coentrao i'm kinda concerned about our next match but i think, barring a catastrophe, we'll beat both teams with goals to spare, possibly with a few Ronaldo goals to wake that fucker up. I avoided the MDT because it's hundreds of pages long, possibly filled with pale fat Brits whining about how poo poo the U.S. team was and pale fat Americans posting a thousand times per loving second because Americans can never shut up for a minute so i'll say here props to the USMNT for having a much better team than i thought. Paulo Bento looked utterly out of his depth tbh. The starting lineup, the unchanging tactics, the not subbing a CB in after Pepe went off for like 10 loving mins in which we suffered the 3rd, the constant whining at the refs like we're some 3rd world football country, his insistence on crap players which means André Almeida will be our starting LB for the rest of the WC (unless he moves Veloso there)...real bad. It's right there on the OP what I think of him.quote:I avoided the MDT because it's hundreds of pages long, possibly filled with pale fat Brits whining about how poo poo the U.S. team was and pale fat Americans posting a thousand times per loving second because Americans can never shut up for a minute so i'll say here props to the USMNT for having a much better team than i thought. Well, this is what happens when we don't have Ronaldo... I still believe he can single-handedly pull us through, but we have the biggest handicap in the worst coach in the competition... OTOH, we crashed and burned and lost like ALPHAS, not by one goal scored in off-side or by a dubious penalty.

Portugals biggest problem really is that Ronaldo is the only real goal threat against bigger teams. Germany easily double man marked him the entire game because who gives a poo poo about Nani getting a bit more room. Ronaldo ended going even further down the pitch to pick up the ball and then he had like 7 men to beat. IMO Bento should try playing 4-2-3-1 or something, have an offensive midfielder like Meireles further up the pitch, one who at least offers a bit of a goal threat from distance

Ronaldo ended going even further down the pitch to pick up the ball and then he had like 7 men to beat. Meireles has never played in a proper offensive role, always firmly in the middle of the pitch, and when necessary a defensive role, like when Pepe was sent off. Reality is that Portugal has no strikers or offensive midfielder that are any good, and this has been an issue since players like Rui Costa, Deco, Pauleta and Figo left. It's the reason people keep saying "Ronaldo should be striker", even though better people than Bento tried it and failed miserably, and even if it worked it wouldn't solve the lack of Portugal's offensive capability. Nani has always been a try hard, with the other options being Varela, who is even more inconsistent than Nani, and the other, Quaresma who didn't even get a call, who is likely to head butt his own team. There's also Danny, but Bento got tired of his Russian injuries and welp. We can complain about Bento choices, but it's not like bringing Adrien or Quaresma would've fixed anything. This is Portuguese clubs abandoning Portuguese player development and it's finally catching up, with this time not having a Brazilian turn Portuguese to save our inadequate attack. Meanwhile South American teams are filled with great players Made in Portugal. Though I still believe we can get past USA or Ghana, provided the players don't panic with this result.

The team's strength has always been discipline, and a rock solid defensive line. What we saw last night was a disintegration of that in the face of an obviously card eager ref, and a superior team. If this team can't get it's poo poo together for Sunday then it doesn't belong in the World Cup. It's that simple. Anything but a victory means Bento should be fired in the tunnel. Then parachute Mourinho in for a match, I mean literally parachute him in like a paratrooper, full kit and all, and have him coach us to a dodgy 1-0 victory over Ghana so we can go home with some pride. EDIT: Also I thought with the addition of the 'B' teams for the big three we were developing new Portuguese talent at a better rate than before? vivisectvnv posted:Well, Danny is excellent, but your poo poo coach poisoned that well as well no? It's slightly more complicated than that. But it is a mix of Bento's terrible temper and lack of character, and shady health insurances in Russia. Basically Danny gets injured a lot, especially when it's time for international games. It's quite likely that many of these injuries are fake and it's Zenit and his insurances not wanting to take risks. This is normal business for pretty much everyone, Ronaldo is always "touched" going into friendlies and qualifiers. But the last time he got injured was during qualifiers(I think Israel), he was dropped, but less than a week later he was training fine for Zenit and playing without restrictions. So Bento said "gently caress that poo poo".

What worries me is Coentrão, he is one of the players who contributes more to the attack and we have no one to replace him. Pepe and Nani at least we can replace decently well.

He is, we've talked about it, either Bento moves Veloso to that spot or crappy Anré Almeida will play there. Either way we're hosed. Also our 1st and 2nd keeper are injured, so we'll have to play old Eduardo. Good thing that Bento picked his buddies for the 23 instead of the players who impressed this season, wouldn't want the US not to have a chance to beat us.

Italy played De Rossi out of position in a 3 man backline because we didn't have any center backs left, and that got the team all the way to the Euro 2012 final. Hopefully Bento can come up with something like that and trick everybody.
