After checking my local papers was a bust, I decided to go a little further out and check the Albany Times-Union. Incredibly, they appear to have a staff cartoonist by the name of Jeff Boyer. Their website is terrible, but here's a bunch of recent toons: 1 2 He likes to draw Putin as a weird little goblin man. I'm not complaining. 3 A more local-ish cartoon. New York has a fair bit of shale oil in the economically depressed Southern Tier region, mostly around the city of Binghamton. A lot of companies were obviously looking to begin hydrofracking there; while there's a belief that this could help boost the economy of one of New York's poorest regions, most New Yorkers believe that the environmental costs are too great. A week or two ago, Governor Cuomo officially banned fracking in the state of New York. At the same time, there was a ballot measure this year to allow the building of casinos in a few areas of the Catskills; this passed. The government has "awarded" the casino to Sullivan County, a somewhat empty area that's mostly rural areas and second homes of New York bankers. The casino was touted as a way to generate income in the region, but why would anyone go to some random casino in Sullivan County when they could go to, say, Atlantic City or Mohegan Sun in Connecticut is beyond me.

The Commentator itself looks like a loving riot, their about page points out that: Some dickheads posted:The West has a huge and dramatic fight on its hands. Not just from the outside, but from the inside too. Our economics are in the tank. Budgets are bloated, taxes are too high, existential threats to our interests at home and abroad have rarely ever been more concerning. We seek to shed light on these core 'civilisational' issues.

Here's Powell's pre- and post-New Year's cartoons: 1 2 featuring NC governor Pat McCrory as a parrot. McCrory was a long-time moderate mayor of Charlotte, a fairly purple-to-blue city, before being elected governor. A fair number of Democrats and Independents voted for him because of his moderate record and a bad attitude towards outgoing gov Bev Perdue's administration. He's received a lot of criticism since then for veering hard to the right and becoming an increasingly Tea Party-ish Republican who "parrots" the national bigwigs (get the joke???).

majormonotone posted:NY Casinos 'Sup, fellow Capital Region-er. The casino thing is supremely dumb for a lot of reasons beyond the whole "hey remember the Borsch Belt, let's do that again" decision by the casino licensure board. First, Casinos aren't doing that well anyway - AC has seen some casinos closing and a lot of people are rightfully wondering why the hell anyone would build more. Second, the ballot initiative to legalize casino gaming was a bit of nice politicing by Cuomo - it approved up to 5 casinos to be built in the state, but specifically noted none would be built anywhere near NYC/Long Island. One was targeted at Saratoga Springs, which already has slots at the racetrack - there was a public referendum to actually bar converting the raceway slots into a full-blown casino which passed, turns out people don't really like casinos in their back yard. The ballot prop won due to this, the city and Long Island were like 75-80% in favor and the rest of the state was more divided. The other problem is that there's already tribal Casinos (Turning Stone, near Syracuse for instance) that cover quite a bit of the state. Adding more, especially in places that are already close to other gaming destinations, seems like a really dumb idea. I seriously doubt that there will be any sort of property tax breaks as a result of increased revenue from casinos, as well.
