From a few pages back, but there seems to be a thread of reverence of child-like understanding among evangelicals ("faith of a child," etc) that I've never understood--so it certainly seems like it could similar flow through conservative thought in general.

Children are wonderful but they're by definition underdeveloped and mentally and psychologically unprepared for the rigors of the real world.

Why this is revered as virtue rather than recognized as incomplete understanding is loving beyond me.

Because their minds have not yet turned to thoughts of dirty, dirty fornication.

I do not get why evangelicals would espouse the virtues for themselves that make them less informed and ripe for manipulation.

For example: While I could understand Falwell or Osteen using the reverence of blind faith to indoctrinate their people into being followers, I do not not know why this envy of child-like would be espoused by the followers themselves.

Or is it just the stockholm syndrome of american prosperity gospel?

It becomes the mantra of the followers, as well, once they have submitted to the authoritarian. It is their rationalization for abdicating personal responsibility - and therein lies the attraction of it.

People who get anxious and distressed having to make decisions for themselves appreciate having someone around who will tell them what to do. That is the attraction of authoritarian systems to begin with. While leaders are clearly manipulative, their followers generally are willing to be manipulated and deliberately play along, in turn.

The Running Man is an excellent novel and really holds up well. Weaponized pollution in class warfare, cruel reality television, the merging of government and entertainment, the fetishization of violence, planes flying into buildings, an apathetic populace....King really brought it home.

I guess it stands to reason. It's extremely discouraging though. How do you get through to those who have no desire to think for themselves?

Or do we just focus on mobilizing everyone else and on making information available to the indoctrinated when they're ready?

So, is her argument that underperforming schools are underperforming because the students are all stupid, therefore no amount of money we give them will improve results? Because of that, we should reduce spending on those "lost causes" and direct money to schools that are excelling because those kids need our support to get even better grades?
