trip report of the 30+ page regional-even-for-australia card. sorry i know no-one asked for this but i had a lot of fun reading about hunt / bigfoot 1. you'll definitely enjoy the photos though. the australians in the thread are drunker than usual. tedious wait after the first fight ends instantly causing a 30 minute wait before a continuation of the broadcast (the early prelims were occasionally just broadcast online with the tv broadcast starting at a set time). poor justin scoggins nearly needed a security escort out after beating hometown favorite richie 'vas' via incredibly bad ref stoppage. loving nam motherfucking phan. i had forgotten about this guy which is a shame because he loving owns. he was on the gsp / koscheck tuf (sporting a 16-7 record) and did some really sick stuff such as knocking out aspiring hobo cody mckenzie. he also fought loving michael johnson - a legit good fighter as a prospect - to probably the closets fight i've ever seen on tuf. they each won a round, so a third was called, and that was so close kos and gsp started arguing and after much loving around johnson was declared the winner. nam came so close to having a win over michael johnson. dude was so enjoyable to watch he had 8 fights in the ufc while only winning 2. the caveat to that is his decision 'loss' to leonard garcia which was so egregious that it even took the coveted 'robbery of the year' award. he fought takeya mizugaki (another personal / thread fav) on this card but i was still cheering for phan. and the dude took a loving beating. mizugaki put it on him but phan was still there, and so loving gutsy that he even took the third round from takeya despite having being beaten half to death for 10 minutes already. it was the best fight on any other night and i remember thinking 'ticket was worth it just for that'. what a character. greg jackson being a loving squeezer in the corner of julie kedzie reminded me of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_sNUQlPl9A the bad stoppage from earlier was so bad that when buffer introduced the ref for his next assignment a few fights later, the crowd remembered and erupted into boos. i can't remember that happening any other time though i'm sure it has. soa paleilei killed pat barry in 2 minutes delighting the homers. this was the fight that retired pat barry. good decision by barry? well, this tweet: Mike Chiappetta MMA @MikeChiappetta 13s Palelei KO's Pat Barry with ground and pound. Barry got up, walked 10 feet and fell face first into the fence & mat. Scary. gently caress. anthony perosh looked like and was a 41 year old suburban dad. he also just happened to be really loving good at bjj. he was slow as gently caress, looked like he learned how to punch and kick yesterday, but somehow it coalesced into a reasonably effective cage fighting career. australians loved him. ryan bader beat the poo poo out of him for 15 minutes. blood loving everywhere. perosh was a mess. it should have been stopped about a billion times but being the fan favorite in his homeland the ref let it go on way too long. the crowd would actually have been really glad. i have had a burning, personal hatred for ryan bader forever so this one hurt. i knew it was going to happen and i was still upset. loved this post after a poster took a look at perosh's stand up for about 30 seconds: "Please tell me that perosh is a bjj ace" then i appear in the thread again, drunk as gently caress, with this: "Brandon loving Vera's here and hunting hot dogs" forgot i met brandon vera in line for hotdogs. really, really chill dude. loving huge. shogun and australian james te huna faced off with people remarking that shogun looked a little less embarrassingly chubby than usual. he then loving killed te huna in one minute. it was loving vicious. luckily the crowd loved shogun enough to not be dipshit homers too badly. i had forgotten that when they needed to make up for time, the ufc would just re-run fights that had happened. keven reminded me: "Shogun punched that guy so hard he made time go backwards and old fights replay " they put on mizugaki / phan again and everyone was very happy. the main event. hunt / bigfoot. forums poster novum with this: "Both win somehow please." inshallah. 'that' referee is reffing the main event. crowd still very and audibly angry. forgot bigfoot floored hunt early, but hunt rallied by going deep into his bag of tricks: "Mark Hunt has better wrestling than Bigfoot Silva. Let this sink in." and i forgot about this pattented hunt-ism: "Gif mark hunt pulling out a wedgie" the thread is having a lot of fun. hunt loving floors bigfoot and with zero urgency just strolls towards him allowing bigfoot to recover. hunt passes bigfoot's guard. bigfoot the bjj black belt. mark hunt ankle picks bigfoot. "THIS IS THE GREATEST NIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR SPORT" and this pretty much perfect call "Henderson-Shogun, the Supersized edition" by the end of the 4th i've seen calls for fight of the year, decade, and century. no one said fight of the night. they all knew. forums poster jediguy backs up the way i remembered the noise for this fight: "Holy gently caress this arena is about to collapse" the 5th starts and mark hunt - peroxide hair now bright red - and bigfoot hug it out in the middle. "Mark Hunt appears to be the fresher fighter". "Blood EVERYWHERE" "This is the craziest poo poo" "this is the loving best fight in the history of UFC" bigfoot, about do die in the cage of dada5000 type problems and with barely enough blood to function, attempts a flying knee in the 5th round. the doctor is called in to check the mess of open wounds on hunt's face and head. crowd going berzerk. no doctor on planet earth would stop this fight here. australia would not permit it. the passion is so high it's effecting those local to any goons: "My wife is screaming for Hunt to win now too" nobody is sure of the result, though most are desperately posting 3-2 hunt?! which is obviously more of a prayer than a sincere evaluation of the fight. nobody knew. nobody was counting who won what round. this is pure emotion. the type you are unable to regret. "I have a final in 12 hours that I have to write that I'm under prepared for. I watched this instead. I have no regrets." "I just stood up and applauded in my living room." the scores are taking a while "Judges are like "..poo poo I wasn't actually scoring I didn't think I'd need to"" loads of people start calling for a draw. declaring one of them a loser sat right with nobody. as we wait goons are desperately try and act like they were paying attention to scoring. finally, we get the results. "THE BEST loving ENDING" "The only draw I will ever like." general celebration. it's just a perfect vibe. a goon notes that it feels like a storybook ending and it really does feel like that. an aussie goon reports that bigfoot hung back and was SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS AFTER THAT, which eased the sting of bigfoot making brazilian excuses in the post fight instead of just being satisfied that he was in the best fight in history. though a goon does provide another possibility: "It wasn't an autograph, it said "please call an ambulance."" another goon brings up that 2 judges officially scored that fight 47-47, and in the bader / perosh fight two judges gave it 30-27, and one 30-26. for reference, the thread thought 30-25 was more justifiable than 30-27. it makes the draw here feel so much more surreal. Dana White @danawhite 46s Both Hunt and Silva win FON and both get their win bonus and I might buy them both their own private ISLANDS!!!! Sickest HW fight ever!!! gently caress dana for not buying them an island. my personal assessment reads like somebody still in shock: "I don't know what that was like on television but live it was indescribable" i wasn't the only one: "Being in that crowd is one of the top tw/o experiences of my life that was absolutely incredible" "I lost my voice screaming, that fight was awesome and so intense man, crowd was crazy, holy poo poo, best first live UFC eve" hunt broke his loving hand on bigfoot's face. so what does hunto do? i mean the entire fight was just so.... photo-graphical(?)

I think we have a spread of time-as-MMA-fan posters in here, which is really good. Nam Phan was a very game fighter but imo, his career got somewhat overshadowed by his jerking off in the shower episode on TUF. Like very possibly he was jerking it in the shower, but it was a dick move by the other insanely bored fighters to call it out and bust open the shower stall. IIRC, the show used censoring as vaguely as possible, so he could have been doing anything but it certainly could have been him getting caught cranking it. https://twitter.com/basruttenmma/status/11001619437068288

drat, in trying to find a clip of the incident, I stumbled into this https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/hfecxn/is_nam_phan_okay/ That links to two IG posts from Phan where he's slurring really badly, back in 2020. I can only find a couple newer videos and it's about leveled off. Real bummer. He never struck me as someone who took an inordinate amount of damage, but obviously brains vary a lot.

Yeah, Nam's condition is deeply depressing. When I get mad about the Contender Series ethos paving over MMA I think of him and Gary Goodridge, and I wonder how many people will wind up with that kind of punch-drunk CTE with absolutely nothing to show for it except some youtube clips from that time Dana White told them they were a warrior and they made minimum wage to get punched repeatedly in the head by Dagestani wrestlers.Marching Powder posted:also i really enjoyed doing that retrospective and i'd like to do one a month for funsies if people might like that or at least if nobody really minds if i do that. UFC posted this on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xKXdbkxH9g It's from back when Cub Swanson was an extremely entertaining brawler rather than an actual good fighter. He and his opponent, Mackens Sermezier, both appeared on the first FOX card. Both lost, but in kind of funny ways. And yeah, Hunt/Bigfoot being one of the best fights ever was a fantastic surprise. Also, the aftermath produced the most Mark Hunt thing. It was a draw, but Bigfoot failed a post fight drug test. Hunt was awarded part of Bigfoot's purse, but asked if, instead, they could simply change it to a win.
