It would kill a lot of government jobs being done by GS's collecting 70K plus to do nothing more involved than a 19 year old E-2 should be handling anyhow, so that'd be pretty cool

They have pay grades similar to the military, similar benefits but hilariously overpaid for a lot of jobs that require very little skill or expertise. When we killed the draft last time, it created a lot of jobs on the GS and contractor side that had the side effect of making military development and procurement hundreds of times more expensive since the contractors were now 100% in charge of their own development cycle and the GS folks in charge of them letting them write their own requirements so they could retire with their GS salary while still taking an even higher paying job with the contractor afterwards. The level of "minor" corruption on that side of the ball is hilariously opaque

Seriously I wish civil service was an option for me after high school. A lot of my classmates and I wanted to do something productive that didn't entail four more years of expensive education, military service, or a minimum wage job. A few years working on something I could take pride in, alongside strangers, somewhere I've never been sounds great even now that I'm employed.

people who talk about a military draft or mandatory military service as a way of promoting shared sacrifice sorta gloss over the fact that almost everyone who was in a rich family never saw combat in vietnam. there will be loopholes to ensure that the sons (and possibly daughters, since women can serve in combat now) of the political and economic elite stay high and dry i can get behind stuff like the Peace Corps or a new WPA as a kind of service, though
