Anyone here care to enlighten me a bit as to why?

Dang, I've been looking at that same one, but I'll stick to just working on my Ninja 500.

As much as the Bandit seems cool, apparently it's a "screamer" where it doesn't really come into its own until 10,000rpm and doesn't redline until like 14,000. So given that it tends to stall at low rpm I'm thinking this would not be an optimal bike for city riding.

Add to that apparently not a ton of these were sold in the US, so parts are hard to find, while for my Ninja 500 parts are all over the place since they made them for 22 years with only one generation change.

Here's the other fun DC area one this week:

quote:

An original hero practical Lawmaster bike, custom made and actually ridden throughout the movie by Mega City One’s futuristic urban cops, the “Judges”. The first but certainly not last glimpse of the stunning re-invention of the iconic bikes occurs when the intimidating Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) makes chase with a couple of perpetrators in the opening scenes of the movie, deftly swerving between civilian vehicles whilst in pursuit.

Only four hero versions of these impressive machines were ever made for use in the movie and were completely operated and manoeuvred by the rider on set. The adapted Suzuki GSX 750s bike has an extended chassis to make the bike much longer and accommodate the gigantic front section (implying a high-spec engine lay inside) and house a custom prop machine gun weapon either side for extra stopping power constructed of rubber, resin and metal.

Integrated into the deep blue fibreglass motorcycle shell are sets of working LED lights that flash the universally recognised authoritarian colours of red and blue, which are still in fully functioning order even around the wide exhaust pipe at the very back. A small panel in front of the rider originally contained an iPad screen that ‘linked’ to the Halls of Justice control room but was removed by the production at the end of filming, although some wiring is still present. This particular bike is identified by its unique number MC01 / Y349 printed on to the rear side edges of the body, other embellishments include the memorable Justice eagle in brass resin on the front and sides as well as scrapes and scuffs that hint at the action the vehicle has seen in the line of duty.

Please note this bike is sold as a display piece only and whilst many of the original engine components are present it will not perform as a road legal vehicle. Due to its size a specialist shipping service will be required and a shipping quote should be requested before bidding. It measures approximately 132cm (60") tall, 85cm (33.5") wide and 250cm (98.5") long.
This prop is an original asset used in the production of the 2012 film Dredd. The asset is made available through a partnership between Prop Store and DNA Films. This is not a replica, but rather an original piece from the making of the film.

In the future, we put our bike engines above the front wheel. We find it increases maneuverability in the form of raw stoppie power.

edit: I wonder if, when the shroud is off, the bike is just some GSX chopper monstrosity. I can't figure out how it would steer otherwise.

:getin:

Bought it. 1400 and it turns out the seller has owned it since new. The only oddly disconcerting point was that he's never adjusted/checked the valves. It ran fine, but I couldn't take it for a spin, because, well... :canada: The bikini fairing was something of his own construction, the seat's been recovered, but the paint is original and in decent condition (needs some clearcoat touch-up). Carbs definitely need cleaning, will check the valves, replace the front pads, maybe clean/repaint the lower suspension bits that have a tiny bit of rust, and see if I can find a replacement exhaust in decent shape. The exhaust that's on there now has quite a few patches - it isn't leaking, but it's not the prettiest setup. Fewer oil leaks than my 02. Ha.

I am now well underway in my quest to have the most oddly niche collection of motorcycles ~750cc air/oilcooled Japanese Sport Tourers (that didn't sell particularly well in North America).

Good buy. First bike street bike I ever rode was a GS1150EF and it scared the poo poo out of me (wonder why?) and I definitely see the resemblance. Amazing how you find guys with the same bike since new for 30+ years. Did he shed a tear?

If you want, I think crappy tire had a clymer manual for your bike here for $5 or something like that. I'll pick it up if you want it?

He seemed okay with it, as he already had a bike to replace it. I think his wife was more choked up than he was. If they have a manual for the 83, that'd be awesome - I think I'll probably need that to properly do the valve clearances.

As to the location, well, yes. I am definitely in the wrong part of the country, as I am reminded every time my dad calls me from Victoria, saying that he's out testing motorcycles one day, skiing the next, and my mom is well into the gardening season. :smithicide:

That chain is toast, tires are probably old. It sounds ok, wonder if the valves have been checked on it ever. I'd bargain him down considering it probably needs a chain and sprockets, valves checked, and tires are probably old too. I'd pay 1k if he hasn't done any of that stuff, a bit more if the sprockets/tires/valves have been done.

M42
Nov 12, 2012

Righto, I'll ask about that. Forgot to mention it has 23xxx miles on it. Out of curiosity, how can you tell about the chain? The only thing I noticed was the bike sounding a bit rough.

e: says the tires have good thread but he hasn't changed them or checked the valves since he bought it (last april). Sprockets and chain replaced 3 months ago.

It's REALLY loose when he walks up close to the bike. How many miles has he put on it and how many miles since the valves were last checked or adjusted? If he doesn't know, ask him to take the cost of a valve adjustment off the top.

M42
Nov 12, 2012

Alright. He got the bike at 19xxx miles, and he only has the title from the previous owner - no maintenance paper or any idea about what's been done to the bike. He says he'd be happy to lower the price cause of the valves, though. What's a reasonable amount to offer?

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

He rode it for 4,000 miles without a valid title? Has it been signed over to him? Is this something that he can legally sell you, or does it actually still "belong" to someone else? :crossarms:

I'd find out (or guess at) what a local dealership would charge for an oil change, spark plugs, and valve adjustment, as they're all due, and start by asking him to cover that as it's basic maintenance that should have been done already.

Check the oil too cause if he's never done any maintenance who knows.

I called around to a few local repair places, but it looks like every drat one of them is booked for a while. I'm thinking of skipping this one just cause as a beginner I don't really want to deal with having to take a bike to a repair place from the get-go, especially since bikes aren't exactly rare in the bay area.
