You could survive tens of seconds exposed to it and not be fatally poisoned, especially after the worst radioactivity had burned off. Those men probably ran like hell as soon as their work was done.

They were using old school film cameras and high levels of radiation plays hell with film exposure. Edit: NASA released an entire study on how they had to experiment with many different brands of film to find one that minimized the problem when shooting photos in space: https://ston.jsc.nasa.gov/collections/trs/_techrep/TP-2000-210193.pdf InequalityGodzilla has a new favorite as of 08:24 on Dec 30, 2017 |

No, the photo you’re thinking of was taken a few months after the accident occurred. The pic posted was taken sometime in the mid 90’s. The one from the 80’s is black and white and much clearer because there’s far less radiation exposure.

Since it's the person that's distorted, it's simply taken with a long exposure time. It's dark in there and they didn't exactly have the time to setup a lot of lights. If radiation had been the problem, it would have fogged the whole film.

It's probably like a 10+ second exposure, meaning that guy had time to run over there, do the thing, and run back the entire time the shutter was open making the exposure. It's the same way people do those crazy night light-writing or steel-wool spinning photos. Also I guess kind of spoiler, this is how a lot of "ghost" pictures are faked.

Didn't the dude who did die just kinda... melt? Like the dude in Robotcop but a bit slower. His body just unwound on him, skin and flesh just slipped right off the bone. Hiroshi Ouchi caused a nuclear incident and was exposed to an extremely lethal dose of radiation. edit: Possibly THE most NSFW thing I've ever posted... https://imgur.com/a/wEpiy edit. gently caress me. Why did I pit IMG marks around that? Force of habit. Sorry. Edit again.. That picture gets even more horrific. The doctors kept Hiroshi Ouchi alive for months in order to study the poisoning as they'd never get another chance. Diesel Fucker has a new favorite as of 22:33 on Jan 3, 2018 |

I hope I'm remembering that correctly. Yes, I believe that was the case. The internet is awash in gore-hounds and rumor-mongers so it would be hard for me to pinpoint the precise details, though, at least not without trying to dig up primary sources (or at least rooting around in the thread for someone else who has; the topic has come up at least twice now I believe). Relevant details which I'm reasonably confident of as thus: The prolonged study period may make this sound like something that happened in the laissez-faire era of sixties scientific research, or something like that, but the accident occurred in 1999. He reported being in great pain at least once early on. I believe it was after this point he was heavily sedated and did not return to consciousness. He lived for about three months; another heavily exposed worker was being treated with skin grafts and blood transfusions, and might have had some chance, but succumbed to infection. He was supposedly revived from cardiac arrest at some point, but was allowed to pass away later at the wishes of his family. At some point, genetic samples were taken, and his DNA was so thoroughly damaged that chromosomes weren't identifiable. His DNA was so scrambled it's kind of incredible/horrifying he lived as long as he did even with medical intervention.

Saw someone on Reddit talking about this, apparently they were attempting several treatments to save him as part of the study, so it's not nearly as ghoulish as it sounds. The picture may also not be him, since a foot amputation was not part of his treatment.
