Miata satiates my need to a nimble sports car. What role does the 86 fill for you?

Fun daily driver / street car.

Miata isn't plated and I wouldn't consider street driving it even if it were given how close the cage is to my head, the low / long-ish splitter, lack of headlights / turn signals / windows / side mirrors, etc.

Going to try and ironman Oklahoma City to Phoenix since it was really difficult to fit this into my schedule, we will see how that goes.

I did Tulsa to Albuquerque in a day back in April with the rest of the trip into Phoenix being about 5 hours the next day so you could do it in one go with a single long day. I had to stop with the dogs and all that so was slower that I could have been solo.

Thanks, that makes it start to sound more realistic when you say ABQ to PHX in 5hr. Google was estimating 14hr for 966mi, so that sounds beatable without performance awards.

Having done multiple fourteen hour runs (Connecticut-Raleigh, northern Michigan - Raleigh, Birmingham to Wichita) and butt loads of eleven hour drives, anything over 800 miles starts to get brutal.

Best advice I can give is start early a gently caress, take plenty of snack and stretch brakes. Every half tank ideally. And stop at just once or twice and just get out of the car for thirty+ minutes or so.

As long as I go into it well rested and I have interesting audiobooks, 16 is easy for me in one day. I do it four to six times a year. Definitely feel better the next day if I skip gas station snacks and only have a few caffeinated drinks. Mostly stick to water and hamburgers.

For really long drives, my best days have been with a mix of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Variety is key. I like to put a bunch of music on one USB stick, podcasts on a second, and have a book or two either on another USB stick or on CD. Then I can switch between different levels of paying attention as I drive. "Podcast" means many things to many people, for me it's short stories, typically sci-fi/fantasy/weirdness in ~30-45 minute episodes. I'm a fan of the Drabblecast and the various stablemates under the Escape Artists label.

I ended up going into auto pilot for most of my drive from NH to Arizona. I remember a few things like all the dumb billboards about Uranus Missouri but like an idiot just skipped past the few things I did want to stop and see like Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo. Only way to survive constant bork bork bork bork bork from dumb pug. Also driving a rav4 probably induced amnesia as well from how boring and uninteresting it was to drive.

Yesterday I did 300 miles in the Boxster up Mt Lemmon near Tucson and by the end of that concluded that it is a great sports car but it is not for long trips as I was super stiff getting out after.

I was always this way until I realized Audible and etc audiobook apps have an option to play at 1.25% speed. It's still not as fast or as comprehensive as reading, but I did the Dune audiobook back from Pittsburgh a couple of weekends ago and I'm pretty sure my normal podcasts would have made me drive the wrong way through traffic with anger or something.

Yeah TrashFuture is not a good road trips podcast is what I'm saying.
