Also I want to do music for WADs again, I did some PSX-DOOM style drone ambient for one back in the day: "downlord" got used in Job's map Point of No Return. And another one got used for the zombie map in Action Doom 2.

Not elves but they do have a clothing line for rich dork weirdos. With this new hardware I think I’m giving up hope that they’re going to patch the OP-1 line-in to stop popping when using USB audio out.

All I did was gently caress with the knobs and buttons before I put it away. I'll have some noise soon I was kind of hoping the tiny knobs would feel and function like the OP1 knobs at first (free spinning, each increment clicks, use shift to 'fine tune' anywhere and reduce the increment), but it makes sense that they're simply 0-127. It's very smooth and the turning resistance matches the expensive weight of anything else "nice", likewise on the sliders. You definitely don't need to grasp the knobs with two fingers to adjust with precision, fingertip pokes are reliably deliberate. I have sasquatch hands (can palm a basketball w/ practice) and can see where they're coming from, but put more value in being able to manipulate many knobs with just a finger or two. My main use case will be assigning them to all of the values I typically wouldn't have simultaneous access to with the 4 knobs on the OP1, which it thankfully seems perfect for. The pocket operators are a good example of a similar use case/knob size/spacing, some of the most dynamic effects require you to sweep both knobs by different amounts at the same time. They learned their lesson from the OP1/Z, the entire firmware blob is encrypted this time. TE is fond of using blackfin processors that you'd typically find in automotive ECUs (The OP1 is a 5xx series, and the OPZ a 7xx), which include a whole bunch of 'security' and 'authenticity' features like one time fuses, which effectively shuts down most forms of homebrew. The extent of what you could get away with was dependent on what assets changed and how much space was left to spoof the CRCs (very little).

I keep knocking over my OB-4, thing needs to last me a lifetime. I even spilled barbecue sauce on it a few days ago. If the sauce went down in the 'tape' gears, it would be real sticky and gross. From now on I think I'll keep it parked on a desk, or at least up off the floor where I walk. Anyway, does anyone use Tracker software for NES hardware? If so which is recommended? I've seen several from Woolyss. I got one of those Analogue mini nt things and this morning thinking about using the NES chip to make bits and pieces of sound for sampling into dt/ot.

That reminds me, didn’t the NES really only have a few square waves, a triangle wave, and noise? That means it’s entirely possible to recreate old NES tunes with a few VCO+EG suites. No idea what the hell is going on with the VRC6, but Vital and Renoise should be up to the task.

Internally, yes. Cartridges could include their own sound chips too, but only Famicom systems could make use of it. VCV has a couple NES chip emulators if you want to compare the sound to any remakes you try.

Arbitrary function generators have apparently been a class of signal generator used in circuit design and repair for probably around as long as they've been digital, and technically a lot of synth hardware would fit in that class (sequencers not so much). And prior to that they were mostly called signal generators. I've been playing around with a lot of that stuff over the past week or two. And I'm bound to be doing more because I've just acquired some of the finest analogue filters you can get. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQlNR5D5FJE I'm so loving that you can find used lab gear that works for music. You just explore and you find all these things like that. I was running the NTS-1 with the SQ-1 and had the arp turned on, and by turning the speed all the way up on the sequencer I got some pretty awesome sounds IIRC. I think I also crashed my Midisport IIRC.

Sequencer is way-underselling that one, it's UI is set up sort of like one but it very much is a tool for defining a smooth or stepped 16 stage arbitrary function, which could be the output of a sequencer... or not. Lotta the Buchla stuff, you see it more with the 100 series, is very close to that test equipment - the envelopes you can patch as quadrature oscillators are called function generators, and they definitely are that in the classic sense, with the caveat that they're analog and in the usable range for music. That's sort of generally what's going on with the 100 series and to some extent the 200 series, laboratory heritage is very much worn on the sleeve. Sorta reminds me of PC architecture - instead of an arithmetic logic unit you have an oscillator or a function generator or something and yeah its not turing complete but it is continuous and not band limited and thats kind of a cool trick for a computer

JamesKPolk posted:lot of this stuff (like the 0-Ctrl itself :v ) is fairly shamelessly ripped from the Serge world. I think companies like Make Noise and Verbos aren't hiding their sources of inspiration being Buchla and Serge. Personally I had 0 knowledge about synths when I started (went from volcas to 0-coast to Black and Gold system), but after reading so many people mentionning and praising Serge stuff I understand why now. Stuff like maths and 0-ctrl would feel hermetic to me when I started, but once you are more familiar with the basics of synths theory you realize how limiting it was to see them as an envelope generator and a CV sequencer. That's really why I still love playing with modulars, I'm learning new stuff everyday and it seems there's enough for me to keep learning for years to come. Maybe some day I'll have a Serge rack, but honestly I feel I still have a lot to learn in the meantime and I probably can do mostly the same with what I already own. Excepted maybe the resonant equalizer. That module is dope and someday I'll get one. But yeah, I love how Serge modules are really encouraging you to be creative with your patching, and that's the same thing that made me attracted to Make noise stuff (and Verbos too though I hate that their build quality is pretty hit or miss) Thanks for the link BTW! More inspiration for me to read

Honestly the resonant eq has been my biggest Serge-related disappointment, even though it's extremely talked up? (I'm selling one now, actually). MSpain, that ep is great. Really nailed the sound of the mid/late 90s through a modern lens. I think if gessafelstein made the music for a doom.wad it would sound pretty drat similar. I liked the more spacious, straightforward vibes of 5 and 6, maybe that's just my age and energy level showing. I'm finishing up an ambient/drone/environmental kind of release at the moment (well mainly got sick of working on it and have too much stuff towards another release sitting around). Any advice on mastering this kind of stuff? really all I've done is soft clip the obnoxious peaks and cut the in-audible sub bass. I really don't like the way it sounds loud though, should i still normalise it to normal levels? I guess because it lacks percussion to eat up the peaks it sounds louder than other stuff, should I just trust people to turn it down lol?

I was struggling to make everything sound as loud as possible, so my tricks might be counter-productive for you. A good general tip, of course, is to compare it to other tracks in your genre. Free DJ software like Mixxx is really helpful for this so you can really get in there and compare frequency ranges. Maybe post something?

Okay, so far I haven't felt as right about buying a piece of hardware as I do about the SQ-64 for a long time. There are an awful lot of things you can do with this baby. This loop function is knocking my socks off, I imagine there are already people out there that have put together whole methods based around the loop function on this and whatever they call it on other machines. You can do fricking numerology on this thing. It is a shoegazer's dream.

OP-1 users: just a reminder that the battery indicator needs to be recalibrated every once in awhile with a full discharge until death and a full recharge. I thought my battery was going already so I decided to try this and it’s been playing at “super low battery” on loop for over 12 hours. The battery life on these things is insane.
