I can say that the OSK in GNOME was originally intended for accessibility, and not as touchscreen input. I agree that the keyboard is terrible: that's because it was just hastily hooked up, and nobody has actually used it.

I fixed a bunch of memory leaks and bugs in it, but I do think it sucks too.

ldap like the thing where os x intermittently refuses to perform ldap queries to look up logins so refuses to do network logon for half the users, half the time (this is actually as far as I can tell gone as of 10.8-ish)

i really thought i was giving gnome 3 the benefit of the doubt by trying to use it on a 1366x768 touchscreen laptop

it's obviously dogshit for idiots on my desktop with a 27" monitor and gobs of screenspace, none of the ui metaphors work when your mouse has to cross two feet to hit a 'hot corner' or whatever.

i honestly thought this tiny laptop was the intended use case

Most developers develop on a touchscreen-less laptop, sometimes with a HiDPI screen. More and more are starting to use traditional desktop environments.

i3 mostly works, the lovely dock app I started writing but never finished crashes it though, also it does weird things with the window hierarchy.

They took one of my patches once though.
