I've heard it said that, in tough times, people can either opt for fascism or socialism. It's a sad commentary on human nature that it's almost always the former.

Well it's not human nature necessarily - it is directed that way by centrists and capitalists. Germany's history would be a lot different if the centrists didn't pass the Enabling Act because "but communism." Moridin920 fucked around with this message at 08:56 on Dec 8, 2018 |

Toplowtech posted:Last Straw: Macron literally cut billion of € of taxes for the richest French people then put a new tax on the poorer so the poorer can be the ones who pay for the ecological transition while he keep the EU happy, despite say tax basically loving over everyone outside Paris. Also the whole Benalla thing and years spent attacking the credibility of syndicates and leftist opposition parties made a headless movement extremely hard for them to block. But don't worry: Macron can always blame the opposition to his terrible politics on Putin. In what form did the new tax on the poor take?

He's also continuing the trend of cutting funding to public research institutions (big drivers of scientific research in France, for historical reason). Kind of a problem if you're going to find ways to understand climate change and mitigate it, yeah? It's always been painfully obvious that his "make the planet great again" stuff was just posturing.

That's a sentiment the fascists keep trying to coopt and this time is no different. But keep this in mind: a lot of these claims come from the likes of Steve Bannon. It's also handy for anyone who supports Macron to cast all the protests as small minded bigots. But Flowers For Algeria was saying this is a rehearsal for if/when a fascist gets into power, because it's guaranteed they'll crack down on protests even harder than now.

I’m American, so the fascists are already in power for me. If this was in the US and if I were living there still I’d be all over it because worse case scenario I’d know what I’m getting into and how to navigate the consequences that may come against me and know my rights and protections. In France I wouldn’t know anything. I don’t see what’s so hard to understand about this.

I was half-serious, I’m not really trying to pressure you into coming because I understand that as a foreigner you have every reason not to come and that’s absolutely legitimate. Besides, you needn’t justify yourself. I am serious though when I say it’s a terrific and quintessentially French experience, though, to hover around the front of a riot. There is some danger, not so much of being nabbed by the cops (unless you’re standing in place while they’re charging - but go up to them while they’re standing in line and look meek and foreign and you’ll probably get through any police filter) but rather of getting gassed. I’m talking about fascists because I am expecting similar scenes in France with regularity should they come to power here. Many cops are fascists. But few rioters felt like fascists to me - a good number called themselves Gaulois which I find suspect, and a couple were openly anti-immigrationist, but many chants were openly anticapitalist. There is also plenty to do in Paris even during the riot. The Rive Gauche was virtually unaffected except near the Seine and there’s a lot to do there. It’s just that the metro service will be affected, but that’s not too bad. So don’t feel threatened by the action and come to Paris anyway!
