Coolguye posted:the ming destroyed the vibrant trade networks that made china so rich and awesome around that time and it's not arguable. like all merchants had to submit a full inventory of goods to the state monthly, and that was before the emperor failed to make a profit on an insanely decadent trade voyage that was really just an extended luxury cruise (he had a loving giraffe on the flagship junk for gently caress's sake) and forbade all external trade period because if he couldn't make a profit nobody could. the entirety of the cool stuff in the dynasty is just coasting on the lead the Song dynasty had built up. The majestic Qilin was not a luxury.

Ok I'll explain. It's actually kind of interesting how this all played out. I'm sure you're all familiar with this guy: The animal picture on top of the can. The Japanese call this mythical beast a Kirin, but the idea originally came from the Chinese, who refer to it as a Qilin. The beer company draws it as a hoofed lion/dragon but like most fake things from Asia it doesn't really have a concrete definition. It's an animal that's made up of a bunch of different animal parts and has magical nature powers or something. Very lucky if you see one! Anyway, as Coolguye mentioned, they managed to sail all the way to Africa at one point, saw a bunch of crazy new animals, and brought them back to impress everyone and also probably eat them. They were especially stoked by the giraffe, which they decided was the mythical Qirin despite it just being a horse with a long neck and not having any lion/dragon/scorpion/dog/etc features. A chabuduo Qilin. Somehow news of this eventually got to Japan. As a result, the word in Japanese for giraffe is, to this day, "kirin" (キリン). Not a nickname or anything, that's literally the only word they have for giraffe. The beer Kirin Ichiban is obviously referring to the mythical animal but it technically also translates to Number One Giraffe Beer. The end.

My wife found this post on a BBS and thought it was funny. I might translate some more from this guy. Seems really funny to me quote:我终于决定要练习画画和涂颜色了,觉得有生之年没有好好的去做点自己的兴趣爱好, quote:I finally decided that I wanted to learn to paint and draw. I felt that if I didn't do something in my life for myself that I really enjoyed, then something would just be missing. So I went straight away to buy 48 colored pencils. Before I bought them I actually asked around, and people said that--if you're a beginner--32 colored pencils is plenty. I just wanted to get it all done at once, so I bought 48 anyway.

I can't make fun of a guy learning how to draw from scratch. So many people avoid learning things or developing any artistic ability because of the shameful early results. Good on the guy for learning and posting his first attempts. What I would love someone to find and translate is the china version of this thread. Musings and anecdotes written by mainlanders about the west, preferably by people living/working/traveling there.

I'm not really making fun of her (found out from other posts it's a she), I mostly just am kind of sighing in sadness at the way Chinese kids are raised. Same thing happened to my wife where her parents only allowed her to study and never allowed her to do anything fun. I mostly like these posts because they are very genuine and into stuff with no layers of irony. I think I talked about this before as one of the few things I genuinely like about Chinese culture (the way people will unironically just be into stuff)

Good on the guy for learning and posting his first attempts. For me, at least, it's more about "this is the number of colours you're supposed to have as a beginner, and supposed to have as an intermediate, and to draw well you must draw fast, and before painting people you must master painting plants" I'm not the worlds best artist but I went from ripping off cartoon strips to pencil portraits and then dabbled in landscape watercolour as my interest took me. Plus the fact that they've immediately sprung for "pencils in a cloth wrap like top end chef knives" because that's *pro* because obviously the tools make the artist, then the self deprecation so face can't be lost (used to get this all the time with uni students, especially female uni students, false modesty to avoid face loss, pissed me right off, like you got into the most competitive university in Hk, you know you're intelligent, loving go out on a limb and make a point in class) but the posting of a sketch anyway really betraying it. The whole thing is like there is some kind of social manual on "HOW TO ARTIST" and loving hell at concept is just depressing Not that it's uniquely Chinese, there was a family friend I knew growing up, decided he'd do Spanish Guitar as a middle aged man, took pretty much this exact approach. But this guy was an anomaly in my experience, whereas in HK and apparently also China, such a perspective is the norm. Bloody hell, the proper number of coloured loving pencils. I ask you.

Shine on, Colored Pencils Lady. If you wanna spend a ton of money on supplies because it makes you feel more authentic, that's cool. I was a hard-core artfag in high school. One of our core members was this rich girl who always had the most expensive materials, but didn't have much ability. The rest of us were scholarship kids and would look upon her gloopy canvases with despair. "Three whole tubes of Golden went into that painting of what appears to be a melting fairy with trisomy 21." "FFFFFFFFFF--"
