This was written by one of the startup's "advisors" - outed once the company was publicly named. It sounds like they offered him a bucket of options so they could use his name (he was one of the big data science guys at LinkedIn apparently); the rest of the piece is him saying "I wasn't really involved and I'm not sure why they offered me all those options, gee shucks I didn't know anything."

Advisors often have very little visibility into how a company is operating. I now insist on seeing board slides and talking to more people, but it's often "someone who has coffee with the CEO and their name on the website" in exchange for a taste of equity.

I had a coworker who had a big deck. I think he installed it himself. He's a real DIY guy, but he follows no regulations or anything. So a tree falls on the powerline at his house. When they come out to fix it, they say his deck is WAY too close to the powerline. He either fixes the deck, or he needs to pay for the underground line. He asked if he was allowed to dig the trench himself, and they told him no  So for the last 8 months, he's had like a 60 amp line just run across his lawn to his house as a "temp" line. He also once was driving to work and his brakes completely gave out that he replaced the other day and he had to drive into a ditch or some poo poo.

I'd feel sorry for him, but the dude's a raging conservative.

In July, I will have to pay back the $10,000. The fee for the balance transfer was 2%, so I will pay $200 for access to the cash. I would like to do something smart with the money while I have it, but since this is a short-term challenge, I didn't see anything very helpful in the sidebar."

How To Get Out Of This Debt?!?!

quote:

For many years during my 20's I lived the "large life". Well, it has now caught up to me when I tried to get approved for a mortgage and was approved for $60K. That is not going to get me anything practical. Below is my financial situation. What you recommend I do to get out of this disaster I created for myself? I know this is horrible and I know I got myself into it but don't know where to start to get out of it. I don't have a savings as I am always paying minimum payments to get by. Credit is poor (620-630) due to the charge off and the high balances on credit cards.

I bring home roughly $3800.00 per month after taxes
Auto: 2014 Toyota Camry , 66K miles, worth $16K for private party, owe $39K (yes, $39K), payment $875/month
Jet Ski: 2015 Yamaha Waverunner, 100 hours, worth $8K, owe $6K (not an option to get rid of as I ride every weekend) , payment $238
Credit Cards: American Express: Owe $15/k, minimum payment $343
Barclay: Owe $1600, minimum payment $43
Lowes: Owe $3500, minimum payment $142
Charge Off of a Motorhome from 2010 of $9900
Pilot Finance (financed getting my pilots license): $310 per month, $2600 owed
Current Rent: $475/month
Cable, Power, Water: Approx. $175/month

What are his %aprs?

quote:

Car: 13.25%, 75 months, 60 months remaining
Barclay: 0% until April 2016
Lowes: 6% until payed off
American Express: 4.9% until payed off
Chargeoff is just there. I have not paid on it since it happened.
Pilot Finance: 12%, I actually pay about $500 a month on it as I am trying to get it payed off sooner. It is a huge burden on me. I started with a $7800 balance last April and have payed it down very quickly
Each month depends on where my money goes as to how much commission I receive. If I get a larger commission check like I will next month it will go towards paying down credit cards. I usually eat lunch on the road as I literally travel every day and usually live out of hotels for my job. Dinner is at home except Saturday nights and unless I am on the road. I will spend $35 per week in fuel for my jet ski. I am required to pay $60 per month for lawn care for the house I rent which includes spraying for weeds and making it green, not mowing. I have a pet that requires about $70 of food a month and the occasional vet visit which is around $100 each visit. I really don't do anything socially due to my job other than riding the jet ski. Flying is unaffordable right now as a plane rental is $129 per hour.

He owes something like 80 grand, about half of which is at 10%+ interest. Guy loves his toys, but they got in the way of him getting a mortgage.

Not remotely. You have an allowance for a personal vehicle, clothing, furniture, and can keep a house depending on whether it's ch7 or ch13. The computer he might have to sell depending on the value, I think, but generally I think that would be included in the personal possessions allowance. E: he probably pawned it or something

"I lost my job four years ago and we can't afford this area at all. But we refuse to move, and also our condo's pipes burst regularly. But hey, I can start selling cosmetics instead of applying for new jobs(since I've somehow not gotten a new job yet). Will this work out, reddit?"

https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/5150cb/cannot_refinance_broke_as_a_joke/ posted:

Somewhat long and complicated.

Family of four. We own and live in a condo that has $125K in equity. Cannot refinance into a conventional loan because we have a low credit score. Cannot refinance into an FHA loan because our condo association cannot get FHA membership. We have always paid our mortgage on time, but for many months we have gotten behind on our association dues (which are nearly $500/month). We also have not paid our last year's property taxes.

Here is why: I was a well-employed adjunct at a local university where my husband also works in an admin job. The university--totally without warning--closed my department and left me with a tiny fraction of teaching hours. My husband's job was furloughed for about a year, temporarily. His hours were restored, but mine never were.

The financial damage was bad for us. We ended up filing for bankruptcy nearly four years ago, but it only made our lives more complicated. We began going to payday lenders and also regularly overdrawing our checking account to the tune of $35 a pop. All told, we now on a monthly basis pay about $500 to payday lenders and overdraft fees. Yes, we have been able to keep our equity, and the equity has grown. We have very little debt other than what I mentioned above.

We can probably refinance into a conventional loan in about six months, but the dam is bursting now. Our condo looks good, but it is a ticking time bomb. As owners we are responsible for all of our plumbing. The plumbing line bursts regularly, and this costs $1-2K to fix every single time. Our hot water heater is on the verge of bursting. When this happens, we won't have any money to cover it.

Should we sell, get our equity, pay our bills and rent? Sounds great right? But rents in our area would triple our monthly housing costs. Literally.

Another twist: For the last year I have been learning a business. It is not a pyramid scheme. I would create my own line of product and sell it. I have a product, a manufacturer, a solid business plan and a marketing plan. I feel certain it would be a seller. But I have no money to put into it. I'm smart and I haven't fallen for a scheme. This is something I've researched for a year. I am also middle aged, and not likely to be anyone's idea of a great hire because of that.

BTW, I understand the irony of calling myself smart and having $500/month expense to payday lenders and overdraft fees. When you are desperate, you will do stupid things. I have spent a lot of time being in that desperation mode. I feel like if I cannot get out of this constant money panic and anxiety, I will never be able to see my way clear of our bad financial decisions.

Should we sell, rent and start the business? Any advice?

In response to people assuming the OP's protesting too much & is part of a pyramid scheme:

quote:

Lol. No, it isn't. It's something that I've thought about a long time, and I've tested. I don't like to give it away is all. It is an inexpensive cosmetic that I have formulated.

Housing costs:

quote:

Well, believe it. We could probably find a place for 4200, or even 3900, and it would be a junker. Housing shortage. Resort town. The rents in this town are in line with Manhattan or San Francisco. They are just a joke. The university brings in many, many foreign students who can easily afford the rents--particularly those from Saudi. So. Yeah.
