if only Trump were completely different in a lot of ways he'd be winning

it ain't the fact that he's an old fucker that he's losing you know, there's no face of white supremacy that can coast in to a win in this country anymore

and a younger more personally relatable version of Clinton would be turning Trump inside out. Who cares? Neither of these hypothetical winning candidates currently exist and the demographics are moving hard away from a position that would allow a platform built on white social grievance to win on a national level. The GOP could definitely still win the presidency in 2020 but not through embracing some sexier version of Trumpism

And let's be honest: with the purity test mentality, the Republican base will not grow outside of white men. Even if they did some massive reach out, it's going to be hard to ignore the various bits and clips of Trump talking about Republican talking points in no uncertain terms. I am cautious about Clinton's win, but I am pretty confident Trump will continue to be a tire fire. I do not see him pulling out of this swan dive.

The only way a Trump-sort could take hold after 2016 is if it comes from the Democratic side, or if the party that replaces the GOP manages to take a chunk of moderates and disenfranchised Republicans. And I doubt that because that seems to be the Clinton Third Way master plan.

Nichael posted:

That's true. The Trump phenomenon just makes me paranoid about future Republican threats. This past year has been awful, and the fact that he has any success is deeply depressing.

The fact that we're watching the Republican Party back a political neophyte like Donald Trump without question shows the party is deeply and perhaps fatally flawed.

Yup, no questioning from the GOP about Trump, no sir. They've all just fallen right in line.

e: Oh wait you probably meant that their backing him "shows without question that...", not "that they back him without question" shows that.... Never mind. :)

Yeah. There's no way, no how the Republican Party can survive in its current form through the mid-21st century if you look at their present demographics, and where those demographics line up around 2044 or so ... if present population trends continue. White non-Hispanic males will be something like 20 percent of the population. And the states undergoing the most rapid changes are southern and western-oriented.

Which also explains partly why so many white males are rallying around Trump, because they see the writing is on the wall.

Considering Dune is largely a metaphor for the rise of Islam combined with the rationale behind why Islam continues to be relevant, this is loving hilarious.

Fake Edit: Also, Bene Gesserit = Globalists would mean that the Globalists created the conditions for Trump, who would be working towards their bidding even if he didn't know it.

The fact that someone like Trump has a solid 40% electoral floor is more disturbing than any of the violence this past week. It says a lot about our country, our values, and our morality. It's disturbing and hosed up, and yet, I'm morbidly curious how much worse you can get than Trump and still maintain that 40% GOP floor. Personally, I'm guessing you can get a lot worse.

I don't fully understand why people sink money into polls that tell them want they to hear though. How is it helpful from a pragmatic point of view? Furthermore, if you just want fantasy polls, why are they always, at most, just a few points ahead of the Democratic challenger? Why not make polls that put Trump +15?

If it's +15, people will think the election is in the bag, and they won't show up to vote.

Tom Wolfe had a bit about fascism in America I liked in "The Intelligent Coed's Guide to America."

quote:

Support [for Wolfe's view that fascism wasn't coming to America] came from a quarter I hadn't counted on. It was Grass, speaking in English.

"For the past hour, I have my eyes fixed on the doors here," he said. "You talk about fascism and police repression. In Germany when I was a student, they come through those doors long ago. Here they must be very slow."

Grass was enjoying himself for the first time all evening. He was not simply saying, "You really don't have so much to worry about." He was indulging his sense of the absurd. He was saying: "You American intellectuals — you want so desperately to feel besieged and persecuted!"

He sounded like Jean-François Revel, a French socialist writer who talks about one of the great unexplained phenomena of modern astronomy: namely, that the dark night of fascism is always descending in the United States and yet lands only in Europe.

Not very nice, Günter! Not very nice, Jean-François! A bit supercilious, wouldn't you say! . . .

Not all that provocative - lots of folks, including Obama, have made the point that things today aren't nearly as bad as they were in '68.
