Right now I keep the computer and desk in my room, along with a shelf for my systems and a dresser with a tv on top, so I don't really have too much space. This is going to sound like a dumb question, but when you say having a room dedicated to VR, do you mean a room with nothing but the computer, desk and AC unit?

Yes, a set of shelves for the computer and vr units, a desk with 2 monitors M/Kb/Gamepad, chair, AC Unit, currently a kennel because a puppy doesn't like being left outside in a 16'x13' office. I removed the ceiling fan so that I have a dedicated 12'x13'x9' cubic playspace. If it makes any difference it's a 4 bedroom house and I have 2 bedrooms (11x11, 14x11) that are unused, one has a spare bed, the other is a dressing room, and my partner has a dedicated hobby room.

I bought the house with the office in mind as a VR room. I even considered some houses that had 30'x30' spaces I could dedicate to VR. Come on down to Florida, real estate is cheap.

When I get some free time I was going to work on a 1/2 court tennis game as I have a dedicated outdoor fenced area (34'x45') that's large enough to fit a singles half tennis court (27'x39') using a gaming laptop and WMR headset. I'm really hoping to get a Santa Cruz at OC5.

I only have an Explorer with the WMR motion controllers and they’re pretty ok. They get jittery randomly, but overall they work pretty good and since I’m a Windows insider, the more recent Windows builds typically improve some stuff.

They added a cool feature called Flashlight where you can actually press the Windows and grip button simultaneously to see out of the cameras, so you can see if your cat is being an rear end in a top hat without taking the headset off. Though is usually it’s easier to just flip the visor up.

Oh I'm aware they exist, they just didn't come with mine. I was more pointing out that using just KB/M sucked when compared to a gamepad or motion controllers.

Yeah, and the whole “Press win+y to switch mouse input” thing with persistent notification is absolutely poo poo. I don’t think anyone who has actually used WMR has had any input into that feature.

What is the point of these? It is cool tech (I like how it can map out a room in particular) but seems like an over 2000 dollar toy essentially, or a tech demo. Is there software that would make it useful in some professional field or games that go beyond “put this down on my table and watch it”? I think the thing that seems like it would need to grow first in terms of potential (unless the video was misleading) is how wide the augmented reality part goes in someone’s fov. It seems very small (maybe different on someone’s face vs. a camera recording through the lens).

They're going for the "wow it's in my house!!!" factor, which doesn't add anything but novelty at the moment. It's good that AR technology is being worked on, because some day it will be great, but right now yeah, don't bother.

We had the "what is AR good for?" discussion a few pages ago, but as it currently exists the short version is it's good for lightweight gaming and adding a video game style HUD to real life. It's definitely still at tech demo levels though, it's good enough for developers who want to get on the boat early to start experimenting and maybe a few business users where the benefits could outweigh the costs even at this stage, but definitely not ready for consumers.

People fall into several camps. There are the correct people that say VR is the future and super cool. Then there are the dumb dorks who say that AR is the future. My wife, who is not a gamer and has generally avoided games because of the learning curve, loves VR because VR games don't require that extra layer of translation and effort to learn controls and whatnot. You're not struggling with mentally equating WASD with moving around a game world or having to remember that Tab opens the inventory and Mouse5 reloads and Mouse2 aims and whatever else. You just move around and flail at stuff and use the comparatively simple controllers to interact with the world. It's less abstract and, I think, less frustrating.

I've played games my entire life so I think that I never really struggled with it that much, but it is kind of like when the first steering wheel/pedal or HOTAS setups hit the market or when we first got true mouselook and multiple DOF in FPS games. I think VR/AR is the future for highly-individual entertainment experiences.

If all you care about is video games, then VR is the future. AR is going to completely dominate the industrial / commercial side of things when it's more matured tech.

When I can buy a normal looking set of glasses that will show interesting information about the things around me, that's when consumer AR will arrive. Until then, it's just for useful for industrial/commercial reasons. While high end consumers can buy this crazy several thousand dollar VR hardware with no concerns, no one is going to walk around with a loving magic leap on their face. Consumer AR will not be around for several years.

In VR I have been an industrial robot in zero-G, a sexy cyberninja lady with boobs, a Redguard battlemage, a bank robber, a 50s detective, a Soviet Air Force war hero, an amateur boxer, a professional racecar driver, a Starfleet captain, and a space pirate.

In AR you can, uh, be reminded you live in a crappy apartment while you play a bad version of a mobile game.

I thought it was fun. It uses steam VR. Note: unless they patched it since I played through it, it won’t run past the intro video if you have oculus core 2.0 enabled. You’ll have to go into your settings in the oculus app and disable the 2.0 features but you don’t have to uninstall or reinstall anything. Just a checkbox and restart the oculus app.

Comfort: While it's lighter than my Vive w/DAS, the Vive is much more comfortable. The Explorer only has a headstrap that gets cranked down compared to the various straps of the Vive DAS that help spread out the weight. Also to keep the Explorer from losing the sweet spot, I've had to wear it rather tightly which is uncomfortable.
Swap the front and rear pads on the explorer (they are velcro attached) in order to hit the sweet spot better without needing to tighten it so much.

If AR was untethered to a computer, it could be pretty incredible for games. Real locomotion with your feet, in real environments, for stuff like FPS games, would not be easily doable in VR, and would be a blast to play.

Have you done The Void? Some of my friends have, and it's definitely cool, but the "game" has an environment that maps exactly to a real-life building interior to let you walk around. It's a technical accomplishment, but it's not something you could apply to a home/outdoor environment without AR.

An Escape Room style game that actually uses one of the rooms in your house with AR overlaying the pieces and clues could be really cool.

Something that could recognize furniture or objects in the room that a person could manipulate easily (like a table lamp) where the game could hide clues. You'd have to do stuff like look behind hanging photos/paintings on your wall just to make sure the game didn't place a wall safe behind anything or try to hide some clues on the back of your family portrait

My extension USB for my Rift, recommended by the thread maybe a year ago, started causing extensive problems/not working, so I had to remove it. Having short cables is really noticable and annoying in games like Beat Saber, so I need to get another USB extension cord.

Anyone have any suggestions? I wouldn't mind spending extra for a higher quality cord, considering how many hours I wasted troubleshooting my Rift before figuring out the ittermittent issues were caused by the last one. The HDMI extender still works fine.

I had these weird issues with my Vive for almost a year it seems, where I would have to remove the USB drivers each time I wanted to use it, and nobody could figure out what the issue was. It turns out that it was just a bad Display port cable.

You can try cleaning the contacts of the cable using rubbing alcohol and a Q tip, let that dry, the hydrogen peroxide, let that dry, then rubbing alcohol again

But yeah in short "cables go bad" is correct. Best solution is use your VR headset in a 100% nitrogen atmosphere if at all possible.

Yeah, it's quite possible the cable brand was fine and I just stepped on it when it was twisted the wrong way, or something. Hopefully this random replacement works for another year.
