I recall reading somewhere that one early argument against profit was that it's "like rent" which was acknowledged as illegitimate at the time, but this got switched around to redeem rent on the basis that if it's like profit, it can't be that bad.

This is why I've been joking lately about being a Georgist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgism You can take the basic concept and extend it out to a general critique of rentier capitalism and natural monopolies (financial, internet cable, etc) and pretty soon you're ending up in much the same place as market socialism.
