Oh my god that looks so bad. They've had to redo all of that by now, haven't they?

Well, duh, of course, CIG has fallen into the catch-up Hell. They have to redo the whole game every 2 years, otherwise it looks dated. By the time they've upgraded all their assets and worked on a bit of gameplay, another 2 years has elapsed, and they've got to do it all over again.

Most games would simply swallow it and release. Or better: do it the right way, work on gameplay first and finalize the assets/graphics towards the end of the project only. But Chris cannot do that. His entire strategy as a company has been to sell stuff that looks good to attract backers early and fund development. The game has to look the best in its generation at the moment it releases, otherwise the sky will be falling. It's pretty funny when you think about it. He's stuck the company in a dead-end, but still hasn't realized.

SC was always doomed to fail since Robbers is attached but I imagine it would be a lot farther along if someone convinced chris to go with graphics that are stylized as opposed to MUH FIDELITY.

You can have simulationist gameplay without rendering every hair surronding your spacemans rear end in a top hat, Chris.

Yeah I have to think at the very least they've had to redo ALL those faces. That mocap looks pretty dated. That's barely up to LA Noir level.

God, the amount of work wasted in making all those cutscenes again and again when the game isn't close to release even NOW...! Good mocap isn't even an impressive feature anymore, it's kind of passe.

Oh no, I was wrong- they did actually release a fully redone version, with the vertical slice from last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHR1aEdTA4M

Keep in mind that pretty much everything in there is likely faked up demo stuff as well. But, at least they had NPC's running around!

PS I really love the idea of all this hurr-durr chest puffing milsim carrier gameplay for a ship that carries 2 loving fighters, it cracks me up how goofy all of it is

Oh, well... That looks fine, I guess. Still not on the level of Uncharted or anything, but it looks like a modern game at least.

So... It's basically COD in space? Doesn't sound awful, but not something I'd be creaming my jeans over. I'm kind of bored with that very linear style of game unless it's really compelling and crazy, like the new Doom.

Basically. It would be COD in space if it were released. But it's not released, and the video is all anybody has seen of this latest iteration of the game. Just like the last video, and the video before that. This is CIG's whole schtick- every couple of years they gin up a demo video and try to fundraise and churn up hype over it. In the meantime they take the art assets they're making for these demos and sell them for the MMO, but kind of just kick them out the door without any functionality.

Watch closely- you'll see it cut and jump around, and switch from "Live action" to prerecorded scenes constantly. It's extremely on rails and nowhere near being actually done. It is, in a word, fake. It's already over a year old and nothing more has come of it.

They seem to be on a 2 year turnaround for these, so likely there won't be another big one this year at the "Con." Just more ship sales and promises. If they actually show somebody playing the game, it will be a first.

It wasn't so much the graphic fidelity for me, but like I expected the game would have hit 1.0 years ago. But like, it would start out really simple, large universe but basic, few ships, no FPS yet, no landing on planets, etc. and it would gradually, reasonably, build up to having all of these mechanics and features over a period of years, but the foundation would be laid down first. It baffles me that Star Citizen didn't go this route.

Lots of traits are expressed more extremely in males than females, both the good and bad ones. Half of the male dna doesn't have a backup from the other parent that can pull you back to the average.

I read the text here as being halfway critical of the game before remembering who said it. Like, "Development as Service" is a very apt description of what's happening, they've managed to move directly to the additional monetization of live service games without the pesky "ever releasing the game" part.

It'd be a pretty good racket except that apparently the funding is finally going dry.

At this rate SQ42 may get released just because they finally have to put out something, but we'd be looking at something more broken than Colonial Marines on Day 1. Not to mention, since it's not really a game designed as an FPS, it'll kinda suck anyway since good FPSes require a lot of design consideration as to the player experience.

Really looking forward to the re-pivot to single player titles. Like Star Citizen!

“I reported on the information I had at the time.” Yeah. Me too. His was wrong a year later, mine still holds up pretty well. (At least now we have a Roadmap to show us what has been obvious for years, “Squadron was never close to release. It still isn’t.”)

Bored gets halfway there by describing the business model as “Development as a Service.” It would be far more accurate to say CIG’s model is “Monetizing Development Hell”, but of course he can’t go there and retain his good standing with his financiers.

His latest video sees him harkening back to things Erin told him in prior interviews. Here too Bored’s memory is selective. I’m pretty sure Erin told him in March of 2018 (as 3.1 neared) that they aimed to have Server Meshing in 3.4. He also jawboned about the upcoming Salvage mechanic. Here we are in 3.5, with 3.6 right around the corner. No Salvage. No Server Meshing. Weird how that keeps happening!

This is indeed weird! :thunkher:

It's almost like there's some kind of pattern! Like this has happened before! And that just maybe, if you weren't so hell bent on only seeing "I hope this is the game I always wanted!", that just maybe you could see some sort of a repeating system happening here.

A system entirely designed to take your money and not deliver a finished product.

But I mean you'd need to really be a super genius to see that so I guess it's time to buy some more space ships. I think I want that Hydra carrier thing! Or maybe that science ship with all the science pods!

What? They aren't in the game yet??? What do you mean I don't understand!

Any group that can hate on Scott Manley should also reevaluate themselves.

And that's not even going into The YouTube guy who was dying of cancer they attacked, or other people they threatened along the way.

There just has to be this time of reckoning where you evaluate the weight of "being an rear end in a top hat for a game" and "really liking this game that does not seem to be ever going to come out".

You don't need to be an rear end in a top hat, and people can criticize the stupid game that is in development hell. It's not like the people criticizing it have put it in this situation, the incompetence is coming from inside the loving house.

Anytime somebody said anything negative they were either Derek or goons, but mostly Derek.

He was their grounding enemy. He left mostly, and everybody is kind of floundering around. This however also goes hand in hand with CIG leadership pulling out of social media with their fans too. They basically run the operation like an uncaring publisher now.

Going back to this, uh, precious individual for a moment -- is there a consensus on what drives this intense and incredibly detailed theorycrafting followed up by a series of questions?

Is it just a lonely kid on the playground trying to create a complicated imaginary world where he understands how all the gears mesh together, hoping that someone else will ask him about it? Is it proof of allegiance -- ridiculous theorycrafting shows that he's a Real Star Citizen because no one else would dare ask what CIG (a company that can't make AI, a flight model, working netcode with a mythical "server meshing" breakthrough, or even a partially-complete single-player game) is doing? Is it genuine delusion?

That isn't how psychology works. It doesn't matter if "Derek" has "influence." You're attaching the verb to the wrong subject. Derek is a name they use to rally around and spite fund. Considering how many times that name has been uttered by the cultists, it's impossible to deny that they use it as a rallying cry. Derek himself doesn't even need to exist.
