It’s a very disturbing reference too lmao

Oh my gosh, it's new aespa!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPdWvnAAurg

It's.... cool? It doesn't click with me on first listen, but I kept getting distracted by all the weird poo poo going on in the MV lol. I hope the production is going to make more sense without the video because something about the melody sounds off on first listen. I don't think they switch keys between the verse and chorus but it sounds disjointed.

Honestly, the avatars and Kwangya content still ruins the vibe for me but I can't fault them for sticking to the concept that makes them stand out on the market. It's like NCT 127's Sticker, out of context it's a weird song but it is on brand for a group that debuted with Fire Truck.

Even though I don't love the song I really love how silly the mv's are and the uniqueness also I really love the bridge. I actually didn't mind the song while watching the mv but then I tried to listen on Spotify and I didn't enjoy it at all, the end almost feels too..noisy? for me personally. Could end up like Next Level though where I thought I hated it but ended up listening to it forever.

Never heard a single Got7 song but I really like this.

Oddly, this aespa track clicked for me immediately. I have a fondness for noisy production tho, going back to growing up on NIN and Ministry, and I'm really feeling some industrial influence in the percussion here. Also people are gonna immediately latch onto the prechorus and bridge, but what hooked me is the chorus.

Loving Savage from the first listen, and it looks like they finally have choreo that doesn't suck.

Aespa producers are listening to 100 gecs or some poo poo. I don’t think that song worked. Next levels complete switch was also very sloppy.

It’s like SM and the songwriters don’t really know if they want a Blackpink with all this rap and abrasive beats or if they want a singing group with some r&b flair. It’s bizarre, since it’s not exactly a crowd pleaser

Aenergy is a really infectious gang vocal melody and I thought it’d just be instrumental.

I’ll Make You Cry is crazy. That chorus hits so hard.

Yeppi is a full bop with a straight cute chorus.

Iconic is the only one I’m not loving yet. I like the verses but the chorus doesn’t go anywhere for me.

Lucid Dream could be a Loona song.

I love how they throw in insane vocal flexes everywhere. Production is through the roof.

Ok after a few listens I’ll Make You Cry is their best song. Banger.

"I want to see what she's in love with."

Low key if its a song they weren't exactly planning on trying to broadcast that's just free press lol. Also that concept video is just weirdly hilarious.

Lucid dream is sort of weird, its not bad but it feels super long. Only 3:30 but by like a minute and a half I was expecting it to be done, has a sort of droning quality to it.

I think savage doesn't really work for me. The main issue I think I'm having is that the production is too clean for this style. Like they're putting in some stuff that has almost an industrial feel to it, but its missing all the grittiness that makes that style of music work IMO. The pre-chorus thing where they just drop that entirely sounds incredibly good and they've got some great b-sides, so you know its not a performer issue or anything.

Maybe its an issue of cleaning up an industrial influence, then going "this sounds off" and trying to re-capture it through busy background stuff? We'll see, but I expect it'll be like aespa's other titles, where if it comes on I'll probably let it play, and I won't actively dislike it, but still won't really hit that 'click' point where it tips over to great.

Neat. I didn't mind spicy but wanted more out of it, lover like me was a solid track that felt like it merged some of the recent things she's been doing with some of her older stuff and I thought it worked a lot better. Looking forward to hearing the rest of it.

Is it bad that I really just want a 20 min instrumental version of this backing track? I fuckin love this "the wonder of the cosmos" spacey-type music with all the long pitch-bending synths and arpeggios and poo poo.

I have watched the original VVV secret preview far too many times for just that reason.

Not what I was expecting but I like it. After having a literal "hell no" visceral reaction to aespa's Savage it's nice to get a good old fashioned bop out of one of my favorites.

Yea I'm glad they stuck to their guns on the sound instead of trying to pivot towards more standard setups when they didn't immediately blow up (which you see happen a lot). I don't know the proper phrase for it, but the song does this real interesting cadence that conveys a feeling of "about to fall over and barely catching yourself".

Their choreo/stages remain some of the best IMO.

It's a shuffle rhythm. It's kinda like swinging 8ths in jazz since it's a triplet skipping the first note. It creates that forward momentum into the next beat

Toto's Roseanna is like the classic example

So after giving the Savage EP a few spins, it's a strong AOTY candidate for me right now. It's definitely one of the most cohesive projects released this year, with aespa bumping into different genres but still managing to maintain a distinctive style and tone across every track.

Mostly I'm just shocked at how good every single track is and at how unashamedly noisy/experimental pop is resonating with the general public in 2021 given the absolutely massive success of SKZ/NCT 127/aespa.

The music sounds cool and all but it really bothers me how the members are at times wearing these obviously uncomfortably short skirts and dresses. This is a group that has one 15 yo and two 16 yo members.

As a teen I had similarly short dresses that I would wear in a relaxed setting amongst friends, but to be given a dress that barely covers your coochie by an adult stylist at an official photo shoot is loving weird. I feel like “they’re wearing safety shorts” has become a lazy excuse for stylists to put teens in clothes that are meant for adults.

From what I understand, showing leg isn't really seen in the same way in Korea as it is in the west. It's not as scandalous as, say, showing off a lot of torso skin. But correct me if I'm wrong ofc.

Typically I think TRI.BE's styling is rather age appropriate compared to a lot of GGs with younger members. Mire is in pants much of the time, for instance, and when the younger girls are wearing a shorter cut it's never really as tight as say when Songsun does, and they're usually wearing a top with good coverage.

None of those skirts or shorts personally look uncomfortable to me tbh. But to each their own!
